Steve Hocking was just on SEN and it looks like a mid season trade period is pretty much a lock and maybe as soon as 2020.

Can't see how this will benefit clubs outside of Melbourne.
Yep we’re stuffed; designed to further strengthen Melbourne club’s. On top of that, club’s will make premature decisions on players and will rarely persist long term and some examples of that are Stef Martin, who would have been moved on before he turned his career around.

Only 22 weeks of a season and club’s need more movement half way through all to stroke this BS interest and need for player movement.

Absolutely insane. Long live the one club player.

The players are contracted though so we can’t be forced to trade anyone. Can’t really see an issue.

We currently have 10 players on our list who came from other clubs, I think the 1 club player idea is a nice romantic notion but it doesn't really bother me at all. The players listed below are all loved at our club now, supporters embrace players from other clubs. Prime examples are Hodgey, Lachie and Charlie, they joined us and nobody says a bad word about them, universally loved by the Lions faithful.

Luke Hodge, Allen Christensen, Mitch Robinson, Lachie Neale, Lincoln McCarthy, Stef Martin, Josh Walker, Jarryd Lyons, Charlie Cameron and Marcus Adams.

Draftees don't have a choice of what club they go to when drafted, trade ins choose us as their club.

I don't mind it to be honest, but just don't think it benefits non Vic clubs. It'll definitely depend on how it's all regulated.

Personally I just think it will benefit the clubs at the top of the ladder no matter where they are from.
Players from bottom clubs will jump at a chance to play in a finals bound team.

But teams won’t give them up unless they get something decent in return.

One example -mid season the Eagles are on top and offer Cripps a ton of $
The problem I see with big ass deals like that, is that the teams still need to pay them 1/2 of of that yearly deal and fit it in under that years cap.
I can’t see to many teams being able to manage that mid year?
I think it will be deals for smaller names, like McGovern goes down for the rest of the season and WC needs to replace him for the finals so they will seek out someone like Liam Jones from Carlton for Back up!

Why does Australian sports need to follow US and European sports and bow down to transfer periods and continuous player movement. European football is understandable given some clubs play upwards of 50-65 games per year and the marketplace is global, but why on earth do we need one after 11 bloody games and not make clubs accountable by having well rounded lists.

Like the media and fans baying for blood when a coach gets axed, the same thing is happening here with a mid year trade period. And now the AFL wants a whole bloody weekend off for it just to appease all the minions out there that need to be entertained by players moving clubs after 11 weeks of football. Just so absurd it’s not funny.

I wouldn't mind it but if it didn't come in it wouldn't worry me in the slightest. The jungle drums are beating though, London to a brick it will come in next season.

As someone that clearly wants it, why do you want it?

Do you honestly think clubs need it after only 11 weeks of footy and despite having had 6 months in the off season to prepare a list of 47 players for a 22 week season?

I’m genuinely confused why a mid season trade period is necessary after 11 games.

For the entertainment.

No they don't need it... they want it.

It's not necessary.

Although as I said earlier if it didn't come in I wouldn't lose a second of sleep over it, not that invested in it.

I don't mind it. Allows blokes who seem to have had their papers marked, the chance to set themselves up for a fresh start. I think Bastinac is the perfect example of someone that the Lions would look to deal for the benefit of both parties.

But who's going to take those guys in a trade? It's not like a player is going to have value at a contending club if he can't get a game at a bottom club, and there's no real reason for a bottom club to add players (and they generally don't in every other league with midseason trading - they generally want picks).

Fair point. In my mind it's those types of teams that have been battered with injury and are looking for a specific need on their list. Again using Basti as an example a goal kicking mid/forward could easily serve a purpose for a team that needs either a stop gap or an insurance policy for a short period of time if they are trying to make a run at finals

Can you mid-season trade for future (end of year) picks?
