2020 AFL fixture released

None of Maddies Match, the Pride Match, the Country Game etc really get any special promotion from the AFL itself. The most they get is a photo op and one story on the AFL website. The clubs themselves are the ones doing the heavy lifting for these games.

There are many other variations as well, Collingwood and Hawthorn have started an Emergency Services Match and we have special fundraising themes for other games such as against Carlton (Peter Mac) and the Bulldogs (Robert Rose Foundation). I don't think any of them should be considered to be 'marquee' games.

Compare the coverage of those games to the coverage given to the Dreamtime Game, ANZAC Day etc and you can see the difference. The AFL build whole rounds around them and promote them for weeks in the lead up.

The thing is - and this hurts me to admit it - The Bulldogs, North and St Kilda are simply not reliable enough to put into a marquee game - you need one of the other big clubs in order to make it bigger - Carlton and Richmond will always turn up in droves for round one (Carlton had record membership in their wooden spoon year and broke it the year after); ditto Collingwood and Essendon for Anzac Day and Hawthorn/Geelong. melbourne also has the added advantage of playing games at the MCG not Marvel which will mean more people coming to the game (and a better spectacle since nothing beats footy at the G)
But the other three clubs are fairweather at best and pathetic at worst when it comes to attendances.

The other thing is where all these games are played - all three teams have home games at Marvel and that means there's nothing you can really lock in at the venue to make it a marquee set up. The lure of playing at Marvel is nowhere near as attractive as a packed MCG with 70,000+ fans.

This is why whenever the conversation comes up about relocating teams, they are three clubs that are mentioned the most as ideal candidates.

North Good Friday / St Kilda Maddie's Match
2017: 42,814 / 47,514
2018: 33,966 / 36,269
2019: 48,278 / 40,962
TOTAL: 125,058 / 124,745
AVERAGE: 41,686 / 41,581
Bigger crowd for Maddie's Match two out of the three years isn't bad (plus the first iteration crowd as 45,722 for a Sunday 4:40pm) especially when the third year was a Sunday 1.10pm compared to a stand alone Friday game with nothing else to do on the day.

St Klida and Hawthorn also do the Silk/Miller cup to raise funds for police officers hurt in the line of duty,

The middle one was a Friday night against the reigning premiers who have 100,000 members - no excuse for a shitty turnout like that. I said it before (directly above) but our supporters are the most fairweather in the competition. When we are hot, we turn up in droves, when we're trash, it shows in our attendance. I don't care whose shoes I piss on when I make that comment - it's a fact.

and the other side of that conversation is the the AFL hasn't got behind these smaller clubs in building an event either, just look at the Good Friday disaster.
Three clubs whose fan base is so jaded towards the AFL after decades of mistreatment via the Docklands. The AFL bases its policies in the top down model, make the richer rich and abuse those who flounder.

Pies play Carlton round 2
Oh I see. Maybe we still play Collingwood in Round 2 then
Actually if rumours are to be believed it will be Carlton and Collingwood.
Carlton and Collingwood to play round 2
Caro on 3AW last night
Caro is wrong, if you play away in round 1 you play at home in round 2.

Round 1: Rich v Carl and W Bull v Coll

which means round 2 coll at home and carlton at home

so

Round 2: Collingwood v Richmond on the thursday night like every other ****ing year.

I agree with you - I'm still holding out hope that Carlton is playing Hawthorn at Marvel on Saturday twilight round 2 - double header with AFLW.

More than anything else I need to know what is going on there.

But why are so many sources saying Carlton play Richmond, Collingwood and Essendon in that case?

Not denying that at all. That crowd for a Friday night game was terrible. Our whole 2018 crowd figures were terrible and it was understandable why people didnt go because the football was terrible. They improved last season, but as you said, its because of the fair whether nature of our supporter group. If we could get back to a top 4 team, we would be filling Marvel every week again.

This is why I think the trade period was so crucial for us - we needed to get these people to the club not necessarily to improve on field but to get supporters through the door. I feel like we're a good chance to break our record membership total next year having done this.

Yep, it's also true. Whenever people talk about St Kilda getting helped out by the AFL I just laughed. How are we ever going to get some sort of marquee match up if the AFL won't even take us seriously?

Because they are dumb who don't think about things like this.

In 2019 we were away in round 1 and pies were home on the friday night, guess what happens in round 2.

2017, tigers away thursday and pies home friday, guess what happens in round 2.

AFL have got a little obsession about Richmond starting with blues-pies every damn year, will be 4 out of last 5 years ( 2016,2017,2019 and will be 2020 ) and before that was 2012.

Will also be the 4th straight year Richmond has started a season with the thursday double and i like a lot of tiger fans are sick of it.

Round 2 will be:

Collingwood v Richmond ( mcg )
Sydney v Essendon ( scg )
Fremantle v ? (optus )
Carlton v ? ( marvel )
Geelong v ? ( gmhba )
Port Adelaide v ? ( ade oval )
St Kilda v ? ( marvel )
Brisbane v North Melb ( gabba )
Melbourne v ? ( mcg )

Rest of away teams are: gws, ade, wce, haw, gc, wbull

They’d have grounds to as well...

Rd 3 2013 18571 v Melbourne
Rd 22 2013 41198 v Collingwood
Rd 2 2014 22230 v Melbourne
Rd 10 2014 53049 v Collingwood

Rd 22 2019 57415 v Richmond

MCG average for a decade is 41,834

On merit West Coast deserve MCG away games.

The 4 Haw / Eagles games have drawn 38,500 give or take so in the interest of fairness that game really should be in Melbourne (with a Saints / Dogs / North game shifted to Tasmania instead)

Would probably be a better fit for Tourism Tasmania too

Looks impressive but if you just take Hawthorn out of that, their last 2 games at the G against the Hawks have drawn 29K & 32K so the AFL decided that crowd figure isn't maximizing their revenue so they have included it as one of your home games in Tassie which you already get subsidized for.

Hawthorn geelong while a great contest since the eighties has only been a bid drawer recently

HQ has to at least make token efforts at sharing it around. Look a hawks v lions. Hawks werent seen for almost adecade up there despite the addition of gold coast. Now its twice a year for some reason

So Essendon is the one that propped up the Good Friday figures this year is what those numbers say to me. Seems like Maddie's Match will once again outstrip Good Friday in 2020.

Don't get me wrong, that's fine, but Hawthorn's MCG attendances against West Coast over a decent sample size compare very favourably with equivalent games against St Kilda and the W Bulldogs.

I guess it's likely this is a direct trade off with the Brisbane Lions who we havent played at the MCG since 2012...

And we'll likely draw more to that game anyway (the last two Hawks v Lions games drew 35,492 and 39,007 way back in 2012 and 2007)

We don't really loose of the switch at all, although there is a growing number of Hawthorn fans that want us to leave Tasmania and use our already healthy attendances to these fixtures in Melbourne as justification
