But there's been a lot of parallels drawn between this fella and a young Hodge to date. I would suggest this could be another one.

While it may suggest he doesn't live an elite lifestyle, he is still young and it's been proven that it's not beyond a player to change provided the right guidance.

who was 3rd in the comp for goals.

Trust me, I would love to be able to ask any of the forwards this year how they felt playing with our game plan and method of forward entries and how much harder it made their job.

Id also love to tell them how much more successful i think they'd be with faster ball movement..doubt they'd disagree.

I think GC would be crazy not to take philips. With his ability and the fact he is friends/ex team mates of Rowell and Anderson, just adds more reasons for them to stay together long term.

And, it would make for quite the midfield in a few years time..

Twomey said last week that he expects GC to take a tall with pick 5. If that’s the case someone like Hollands could end up at Essendon if we don’t take him.

I agree. Even though Reid probably suits their needs more, I think Gold Coast will grab Phillips if he is still available, because he will most likely be the best player at their pick and he will also assist them in keeping Anderson and Rowell due to their connections already established from U18.

Completely understand that view. I just rate his skills a bit higher than others - even seems more classy than Phillips, Perkins, Bruhn.

If he turns out like his brother, which is probable, I think that would be a pick well spent.

If we somehow got him with a second 1st, I’d be ecstatic.

Can you imagine the pressure building on our recruiting team right now ?
First time, in a long time, we have a high draft pick. We cannot afford to stuff it up.

The added ‘stinger’ is - do you consider trading pick 4 for 2 first round picks ?
Do that and the spotlight will intensify greatly, as those picks will need to both come off or you’ve missed an opportunity to draft a ‘Top 5’ star.

At pick 4, will we play safe and take best available or will we slightly reach for a player we deem to ‘rise like the Phoenix’ ?

Glad the draft is getting closer BUT my sphincter is getting rather twitchy - can’t imagine what McKenzie & Wright are feeling right now.....how many times would they have changed their minds !?!?!?

Can’t wait. We get this right & No. 14 is closer than we think.

Im starting to think perkins is our number 1 target unless dgb is there. Hypothetically if mcdonald falls to 4 surely essendon look to move up 4+24 for 6+8 seems fair giving us perkins , then 8 could be split again for Collingwood 14+16 if we liked poulter .

If Hollands/DGB are gone by our pick this is what I'd love to eventuate. I think our kpp stocks aren't as dire as people make out and I think we'd be able to grab a kpd with 14.
Coming away with Perkins, Chapman and Poulter/Ford in the first round we've done something very right.
Plus I'd love to see the melts.

If theres a clear A grade available. but its a KPP and not a top mid, then go for that. Preferably a Hodge who can do both

so roughnlove reckons we are not into Hollands

i will flip out if we pick Zach Reid, huge bust potential with him.

i would like a tall if one is available (JUH, McDonald, DGB, Thilthorpe) or else Will Phillips (because even though our mids have been ordinary and an area of improvement we have to make, we have so many solid players there and Clarko is unlikely to make real changes once the season starts, so if we do go a mid early, he wont get games early until we lose enough to justify playing a better player over a more experienced player which is the trend we have seen in the last few years, that no matter how poorly an experienced player has played, he will not get dropped for a better younger talent until the season is a write off)

others we may look at are Archie Perkins (sml forw/Mid) Oliver Henry(Gunston type), Heath Chapman (CHB) or maybe a Tanner Bruhn?

This is an interesting point! I'm sure there would be a lot pressure on them.

I think they have some credit in the bank anyway with the work they have done with the later picks in the national draft over the past 5 years (2015: Hardwick 44, 2016: Morrison 74 & Lewis 76, 2017: Worpel 45 & Moore 67, 2019: Morris 57) and through the rookie draft (2016: Hanrahan 14, 2017: Jones 7*, Mirra 23, 2018: Greaves 14). Obviously still question marks on most of those but they have come a long way. Could still have a couple more in Koschitzke and Jeka.

In terms of first and second round picks the past 5 years (2015: Ryan Burton 19 & Kieren Lovell 22 2019: Will Day 13 & Finn Maginness 29) it is a bit hard to gauge their pressure meter from here alone. Burton is going to be a player but was traded out (much to the reluctance of many on BF), Day is proving to be an astute pick up and Maginness still has a bit to go but I'm sure will be fine. Lovell obviously didn't work out especially in hindsight with Josh Dunkley being picked up only a couple spots later. 4 top end picks in 5 years. Just the 4.

Personally, I think most of the pressure on the recruitment team comes from the players traded in (O'Meara, Mitchell^, Impey^, Wingard and Frost^) but will likely get credit from (Scrimshaw, Scully, Phillips, Hartigan and Patton) for giving up next to nothing. You'd think they would also be hoping Burton and the other players they received from the draft picks don't outshine Wingard.

We can only hope that they make the right choice but as always with the draft it does become a bit of a lottery. Talent and potential doesn't equate to success so it can be pretty hard to judge.

All of the above equates to a lot of pressure. We need to nail the draft to make the most of the players traded in. I think last years was good. We also have a good core of players but now we need that last wave to get us over the line. If they stuff up the draft, there's a good chance it was all for nothing.

That being said, I reckon there would be a level of excitement too. They have been a bit deprived from drafting top end talent over the years. Now we have access to a potential star at pick 4(ish).

* I've included Jones in the list because he was tracking ok but was squeezed out due to list spot reduction and injury

Davo I am a fan of Heath Chapman. What are your thoughts on him?

imo he is the 2nd best KPD in the draft, i like his attack on the contest, good interceptor and defender aerially and he likes to go for a run after he takes a mark, so has good counter attacking game sense, tall and strong enough to play KPD, but not FB atm, so likely a CHB type that can rebound, similarly to Frost.

Yeah we know he had no pre season and injuries but the lack of effort he showed this year was pretty piss weak, bar the saints game where he looked really good.

Chapman is also quite a good kick isn't he? That would make him better than Frost wouldn't it?

I am severely tempted to bookmark a few views here just as a bit of hindsight as a lot of the contributors here seem to have strong views.
No matter what, recruiting isn't an exact science there will be hits and misses no matter how good you are. The better recruiters have better success rates.
A lot of what goes into recruiting a player involves the background of the player, family and how he interviews. This is critical information and recruiters have this. Unfortunately our resident experts do not. I realise a player like Dustin Martin probably didn't interview well and would fail a few other criteria but for every Dustin Martin there are 20 failures because of those exact reasons. Over the years recruiters have realised that A lot needs to go right for a young footballer to succeed in the pressure cooker environment of AFL football. Having the right temperament, support and a good family can be all the difference.

What are your knocks on Reid Davo?. Ive managed to go back and watched a few nab games and would prefer him over cox.

he is slow, he projects more as a very skinny ruck than defender, his disposal isnt as good as they claim, i rewatched footage recently, he got under 10 disposals and he had 3-4 clangers and not 1 was what i would call quality, he has never dominated a game in the u18's and you want that to justify potential imo, because he is so tall he can be unco sometimes, if you have watched him you will see this.

his positives are he can ruck tap, he can mark, but any 200+cm kid can and he can be competitive.
