Draft central rates him an 'above average' kick.
Can't see anything in the footage of Perkins online suggests that he doesn't have a good technique that will only improve with time in the AFL system. But to be more positive, he has a heap of weight and carry on his longer kicks - it catches defenders out a couple of times in the 4 mins of NAB highlights available online. He's also capable of delivering flat and on target too – a couple where he kicks from the wing back into the middle/fat side of the ground are telling.
He doesn't have the high end footy IQ of the frontrunners in this draft, but that's not to say he won't develop it. We drafted Trent Croad, and he was a lot further back in this department when his name was called.
But the kicker is that Perkins is bloody explosive, works up the ground, and has smarts to burn when he's operating in his lane around goal. With added development his lane will get wider too. He breaks out of contests and find the goals a few times in a way that suggests he's a pure forward with some handy mid to tall midfielder's attributes as well.
We lack explosive players, particularly larger and powerful explosive players like Perkins at the Hawks.
He identified himself as a confidence player which is a little bit of a concern. But him mentioning it also suggests he's already working on how to get past it.
Would be surprised if we called his name at 4. But then it wouldn't exactly be the end of the world either. He's incredibly explosive, a good size, and looks versatile enough to play forward and midfield.
Still like DGB more, he has Rance like athleticism, and is handy with the ball in hand as well.
Looking forward to seeing what our recruiters come up with, but I also don't buy that Perkins can't kick. He looks solid already, with room to improve.
