Just a quick one on Downie.

I think Twomey alluded to the Giants looking at him around Pick 20.

I am seeing a Mosquito scenario if this is the case, where the club could potentially have 10 players on their list rated higher than Downie and would be positioned not to match a bid.

The idea of trading out here makes no sense because they would be trading out of the talent they rate higher than Downie, just to select Downie with later picks. In this situation, we could see a pass, select at 24, select twice in the 3rd round and potentially trade out one selection.

Just writing to preempt because I think this is a strong possibility given the potential for clubs to have talent orders outside the first round that really don't match up.
When you trade out the pick you get something in return. A future pick would be quite nice.

Reeves is on the list. Would make no sense to fill a spot on the list with another developing ruck
Could be worth a rookie list spot. Might be a later developing ruckman that falls through. Brooksby and McEvoy are gone next year and ceglar probably the year after.

Just say we have to match an early 20’pick for Downie and with the discount we keep intact the three 40 something picks. Do we take three players ?
What do we take? A forward a ruck type? A tall defender? A small forward? An outside mid with pace?
I know It depends on what we get but surely given we have the spots on the list could it be an option?
one or two should turn out okay?🤞

Hopefully we get to use both Pick 4 and Pick 24 before a bid comes for Downie then I'd be wrapped with the following:

Pick 45: Connor Downie
Pick 46: Will Papley
Pick 49: Henry Walsh

Mission accomplished 😎

It's all true, but the league and it's clubs are all about the optics.

Pick 1 carries weight for that reason, but they may surprise me.
I think I just see it different to you.

Letting JUH slide is conceding & f**k if I'll ever be happy conceding anything to Footsore.

I 100% want us to select Campbell in the hope that we get him, knowing full well that Sydney will match. I hope Radelaide is the same.

The 25% discount on academy means we can match a bid earlier than where we actually rate him (equiv of 25% in points) and not lose draft position yeah? Or is it that our net points position doesn't change but our draft position does?

It's just the same as Knightmare or Davo27 posting in here offering insight.

Not really. I come here to read posts from other Hawk supporters like Davo27, not read that someone has a new podcast up on an external site. Just my opinion.

This still from yesterday?

Hypothetically if our 24 gets pushed out to 29 through nga and academy bids and downie gets bid on at 28, applying the 20% discount would give us 111 points extra to match the bid , where would our next pick fall ?.

There's a big chance we won't land Downie. We might have 20 players rated ahead of him and with the draft so difficult to predict this year there's a fair chance that one of those will still be there when someone calls Downie's name.

You just lose the 'extra' points right?

Thanks for the Intel, seems like a good kid (bottom ager) and if we go down that path, we might think he has big upside.

I did this profile for Carrigan fyi and can confirm he trained today so the knee isn’t much of a concern.

Some more hawks related comments, Downie looked in great shape and seems very popular with the whole metro group.

Wish he pulled out with a sore calf or something!

I wish the same for Josh Eyre, can see why your club interviewed him and his family yesterday

Remember, when clubs match early bids, they will often lose a pick in doing so, meaning teams positioned later may not slide down as much as predicted. e.g. if a team choose to match a bid on 15, and uses their pick 25, the next teams pick will still be 26 as it was beforehand.

I wonder if this is sometimes missed when they talk about pick sliding so much

That's true and probably great news for our picks in the 40s, unfortunately none of the teams matching bids will be using picks before our current Pick 24 (unless something unlikely happens like North bidding Campbell at Pick 2 or someone bidding on Reef McInnes before Collingwood's picks).

Out of curiosity would you guys match a bid if it came at 49 (likely ~45 after Academy selections)? I already know you guys have the three first round picks + Cody Brand as a later academy player who might take preference so you might pass?

Perkins isn’t really a quality ball user though. That’s one knock on him

From what I've read he's actually damaging with the ball and not a complete butcher. Puts it into damaging places but can miss targets. But of course I haven't seen him live so I can't be certain about that. Draft central rates him an 'above average' kick.
