Also if it is only 2 rounds what does that mean for draft picks? I mean what if a club traded for a future 3rd round draft pick last year, and what if like the Swans, we need those later picks to help pay for academy players?

I think it’ll be minimum 2 players. Clubs will be allowed to take more if they want to/ if they have lost spots.

Heightened restrictions in Victoria have ended hopes of any form of the NAB League returning in 2020

They are unchanged. I believe all completed by early Dec.

The Victorian government has pledged that Year 12 students will still receive an ATAR by the end of the year. VCE exams will be held at the same time, to finish by 2 December. The general achievement test, for VCE students, will be pushed back from the end of term three to the beginning of term four.

Making some arbitrary number of rounds / picks would be monumentally moronic and useless

teams with multiple picks or late picks get ****ed over

teams with ngas or father sons get ****ed over

players who want to move clubs that would get moved for mid to late picks get ****ed

teams get ****ed by the above

draftees get ****ed over

basically everyone gets ****ed over. And for what? So someone doesn’t make a bad drafting decision?

here’s a thought, if teams aren’t comfortable drafting players they haven’t seen play the can

trade the pick away for a player

trade the pick to next year

trade up or down for a player you have seen and rate

trade multiple picks for less picks / a single pick and take someone you rate and take less kids in this draft

draft someone they have seen ie Sa / Wa kids

draft a mature age player

The AFL is targeting a December national draft and remains hopeful Victorian talent will get a chance to shine later this year.
The league on Tuesday officially cancelled the 2020 NAB League season, with the Victorian government’s decision to impose a State of Emergency on Sunday forcing its hand.

Players from country NAB League teams had been set to return to training on Monday ahead of the start of a planned mini season on August 22, but new restrictions across Victoria mean no community football training or competition can be held until at least September 13.

The AFL is working to ensure opportunities will exist in 2021 for players who have been impacted this season through a revised talent pathways model.
The possibility of internal state-based games being played between Vic Metro and Vic Country in late September and early October is being explored if it becomes safe to do so.

The AFL national draft is traditionally held in late November but is expected to be pushed back.

Interstate, the SANFL under-18s competition completed Round 6 last weekend and the WAFL Colts competition played Round 3.

However, AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan told News Corp last week the lack of football for Victorian talent could make things difficult for recruiters.

“It will be problematic with the boys around Melbourne but we just have to look at the bigger picture there around the health of our community,” Sheehan said.

“Normally recruiters have got a view of a player going into their 18th year, but things change in their 18th year. Some kids progress, some kids reach something like their ceiling and don’t continue at the rate you thought. So they’re going to be flying blind, a little.

“But through the great pathways they would have seen them in their 16th year and in their 17th year and they’ve seen them in practice matches earlier in the year.”

If you wanted to trade a pick from this year outside the top 10 I think you'll find it doesn't hold value anymore.

Last year everyone was shocked that the Suns gave us a future p11 for 26. This year of be surprised if anyone offered a future 26 for our pick 11.

Original lockdowns started March and we pushed the juniors to August. That was on the back of a wave of international travellers returning. This is bigger numbers and entirely community transfer. If we start nab league on time next year I'd can it a win

Yep. Minimum of 2 picks makes sense if lists are cut. Maximum of 2 makes no sense at all.

looks like Qld borders have been closed to all NSW, this is a huge blow to the NSW kids who really need to play interstate teams to get some exposure, at this stage can only see Campbell and Guilden being drafted as they played Allies last year

if list sizes remain the same, what should happen is clubs are told that they must make a minimum of 6 national draft selections over the next 2 years, clubs would then have the option of delaying a selection until next year when they have more information and then the kids that miss out this year will have a greater chance of being selected the following.

Big article on both on AFL com. Looks like the academy series has been reduced to two games between teams of the same state only. GC was supposed to play NT but I don't know if that will go ahead. Are the NT kids actually playing ATM

Looks like the quirk is the fact he was in GWS academy, but moved to GC. But can't be picked up by either club with priority, because of the rules you leave your academy zone you forgo the opportunity to be picked up by that club. You also need to be in an academy zone for five years leading up to the draft, meaning the Suns can’t guarantee he will join their AFL system either.

The Bulletin has run the rule over the academy and come up with a list of the best players coming through the ranks.

Today, we reveal the best underage and over-age players who are on the club’s radar.

AUSTIN HARRIS:
Age: 17.

From: Cairns.

Club: Broadbeach Cats.

An under-17 All-Australian last year, Harris is a Cairns product relocated 12 months ago and has been living with a host family on the Gold Coast. A midfielder who oozes class on the outside and on the wing. Over time Harris, a left footer who breaks lines, will put on more size and be able to shift into a more inside midfield-type role. Similar to 2019 draft pick and academy member Connor Budarick, who played a lot of underage football in the midfield before going down back, Harris will likely spend his early stages in an AFL team playing in a different position other than in the middle. Harris’s ability to use the ball well means he could make the shift into a small forward or defensive role.


WILL BELLA:
Age: 17

From: Mackay

Club: Palm Beach Currumbin.

The brother of Gold Coast Suns AFLW ruckman Lauren Bella, Will is also originally from Mackay. He made the shift with his family when Lauren came down to the Suns and is part of the Palm Beach Currumbin State High School excellence program. Bella is a key position player who played at centre half-forward during some trial games. He is a good overhead mark, has ample power in his legs, is quick off the mark and can take a strong pack mark. Add to that he has a penetrating kick and Bella is quite the package deal.

JED FOGGO:
Age: 17

From: Northern Rivers.

Club: Coolangatta Blues.

A player suited perfectly to playing a role as a third tall in defence. Foggo, standing at 190cm and weighing in at around 95kg, hails from the Northern Rivers and goes to school at Palm Beach Currumbin where he travels to daily to be part of their sports excellence program. Foggo has footy smarts, is good overhead and uses the ball well by foot.

JACKSON GRIFFITHS:
Age: 17

From: Logan

Club: Mt Gravatt

A player who has come on in leaps and bounds over the past 12 months. Griffiths lives right on the edge of Gold Coast’s academy region up the M1 and is a quality small defender who boasts some pace. Griffiths could develop into a midfielder over time, uses the ball well, is very clean below his knees and can take a good mark.

JOSH FAHEY:
Age: 16

From: Gold Coast

Club: Broadbeach

Fahey provides one of the most intriguing subplots of the underage academy players at the Suns. He was originally part of the Greater Western Sydney academy while living in Canberra but moved up to the Gold Coast with his family, falling into the lap of the Suns. There is just one problem: under the current academy rules Fahey can’t be drafted with priority by either Gold Coast or GWS. The rules state if you leave your academy zone you forgo the opportunity to be picked up by that club. You also need to be in an academy zone for five years leading up to the draft, meaning the Suns can’t guarantee he will join their AFL system either. The 186cm talent, who weighs around 76kg, is part of the Allies squad and while he isn’t a walk up start just yet, he is progressing well. Fahey has good breakaway speed and a thumping left foot.


BODHI UWLAND:
Age: 17

From: Gold Coast

Club: Broadbeach. Burleigh junior.

A solid midfielder who is as tough as they come, super courageous in contests and has body built more than most his age. Gold Coast have an ample number of inside midfielders but he is be one the club is watching closely.

JOSH GORE:
Age: 19

From: Gold Coast

Club: Broadbeach

Gore was stiff to miss out on being drafted at the end of 2019, particularly given the extra rookie positions the Suns were given as part of the concessions granted to the club by the AFL. Gore trained with the Suns senior team throughout the last pre-season, has played for the Allies and went to the state combine.
The small forward, who stands at 178cm and weighs around 76kg, has a very good goal sense, a strong left foot, can take a good mark overhead and has an exceptional work rate. Coaching staff and current Suns AFL listed players can’t speak highly enough of him.

Fahey played very well today. Think he is only a 17 year old. Suns bit to solid for Lions today, in horrible windy conditions.

Hopefully bit better conditions next week down the coast when they meet again.

Bit hard for anyone to really stand out or take game by scruff of neck as very scrappy all day.
