Let's be realistic; if any of this word about Gunners going to Collingwood is true, then we're in the box seat. He's contracted. It's Collingwood that wants him. Such a potential trade happens if we get overs, and I mean BIG overs. Otherwise, he stays. We're happy either way.

But, bold moves need to happen if we are to become a much better team. The Croad/McPharlin for pick 1 & 36 trade was bold and very unpopular with the fans. But without that trade, we don't win 2008 or the threepeat. I genuinely believe that.

My gut feeling is that we're going to be active during this year's trade period, and there may be some unpopular moves. But they will be for the benefit of the club and it's future. Very interesting and exciting few months ahead.

I'll preface this by saying that I will be VERY surprised if Gunston goes.

However, if the scenario is true, then it seems like a test of whether the club is looking at a 1 - 2 year, mini rebuild - or a longer term rebuild.

Trading Gunston (unless it is for another elite player) would be a strong signal that we don't see a short term path to contending. If this is the case, I hope we genuinely go hard at the rebuild and move on some of our older players. Would make for a long 2021, but no point trading easily our best forward and then keeping the likes of Smith/Frawely to keep from completely bottoming out (hard to see us not being bottom six without Gunston)

We all know Clarko will be bold and brave. We are Hawthorn....we won’t want to be a middle of the road side for the next 5yrs. However we need to have a crack at a flag whilst the likes of Wingard / Mitchell / OMeara are in the side.

We have plenty of cap space

Bring in Cameron and Corr as free agents. Trade out Gunston for Stephenson and the pies first rounder. Then go to the draft with picks 4 / 13 / 21 and Downie
Allow Patton and Cameron to work in tandom again.

Wouldn’t be a bad outcome

I can say confidently that if Hawthorn get Cameron in FA and trade Gunston for a first and Stephenson, it would not be 'bad'. I might even go so far as to say that would cross the line into 'rather good'.

A lot of people judging a guy on his attitude based off not a lot. I doubt Collingwood will move him on but even if they did it could just be because they want to go all in on winning now and think others may be better suited to that.

Really hoping for Phillips, I remember watching the gf last year where Rowell dominated and thinking man it would be great to get Phillips but thinking we wouldn’t get a pick to do it.

Even pre-injury Holland’s wasn’t much ahead of Phillips, if at all. After knee injury it’s a no brainer to me.

saying this COVID might have a silver lining if we get Phillips. I don’t believe he’d get to four if he played all this year
Juh - Dogs
Thilthorpe - Adelaide
McDonald - North
Hollands - Sydney
Phillips - Hawks

Is that a possibility?

Surely not...

"As the Roos told him to look elsewhere, they have NO bargaining rights, he will be picked up fairly cheap as a result. Should we give him a look?

Thoughts?"
I have always had a soft spot for Ben Brown.

Probably because he looks like a Melbourne Uni Arts/Humanities 2nd year student from the late 1990's and I think he would be a cool cat to have a beer with.

The problem is though we already have Patton so it would be a bit of a waste to pay big money for 2 x one dimensional mark kick full forwards (really only space for one of those on each AFL list these days)

Still not worth it. A pick in the mid to high teens and a player they don’t want for a 28 year old 3 time flag winner, All Australian and a player who can go forward, back and even wing.
No chance we lose Gunners for that.
I am ignoring this year due to the crap we got dealt. This club still has a lot of quality and can turn it around.
Gunston will still be going strong around the 33 year old mark as he is smart, and doesn’t carry much weight around.
You make a good point about Gunners potential longevity.

Many of the players that played into their late 30's like Tucky and Dustin Fletcher were very lean units.

This year in particular Gunners looked super lean like a greyhound (I think he was listed at 83kg which very light for a guy who is 6 foot 3)

I think Gunston could easily play until 33 to 36 baring any major injuries.
