Just on Stephenson, if (and I emphasise the IF here) Collingwood were willing to part with him in a deal involving Gunston, wouldn't alarm bells be ringing?

A player of his talent doesn't get offered up in a deal unless something is wrong. Stephenson has been a bit all over the place this year. Not sure what's happened but something doesn't seem right.

Not necessarily true. There was nothing wrong with Burton and we moved him on. It might be that Collingwood think he is not going to be as good long term as he may be valued elsewhere in a trade. And they might think they could move him in a deal to get someone who gives them better chance of winning a flag. If Gunston did request a trade to Collingwood, I would be happy for Stephenson to form part of the deal.

The part about Gunston to Collingwood I struggle with is their salary cap. We know they are struggling to re-sign De Goey and Moore. Where would the money come from?

I have said elsewhere if Gunston was keen to move, Collingwood would be the perfect fit. He makes them a contender. But I just can't see the salary cap space being there (and obviously want to keep Gunston).

Unless we get one of their higher earners in return

I’m still struggling to see the value of trading Gunston mainly because a) we’re a team lacking leadership and he really stood up this year and b) we don’t have anyone to replace his firepower. Gunston has been our leading or second highest goal scored since 2015 except for 2017. He’s kicked 50+ goals multiple times and finished third in the Coleman this year with our horrendous ball movement.

I acknowledge he will be 30 next year and we’re likely entering a rebuild phase. But no tall forward on our list can produce what Gunston can. Patton is injury prone. O’Brien is limited. Lewis has potential but went backwards this year and Jeka is raw. Even if all these players improve it will take a miracle to replace the hole that Gunston leaves. To make matters worse we won't have access to the two best tall forwards in this draft.

This isn’t like 2005 where we can happily trade guys like Lonie & Hay because we don’t have the prodigious talent waiting for opportunity. Our list is limited. By doing this I feel like we’re basically throwing in the towel and committing to a significant period at the bottom end.

But I struggle with that concept too because by then the talent we gave up considerable assets for (Mitchell/O’Meara/Wingard) will be into their 30s and we’ll require another soft rebuild to replace those players. And if that happens it means we’ll be wasting close to 7 or more years since 2016. That is poor management.

Pick 12 + Stephenson is decent value on paper. But 12 will likely be 16 or lower after bidding and FA compensation & Stephenson could be a bust. So if we go down that path and actually trade Gunners then we might as well just go all in with trading our older guys for capital since we're committing to the pain anyway. I personally disagree with that approach but I guess you could make the argument that if this season isn't an anomaly then we'll be committing to the pain even with Gunston.

I’d have a tough time saying no to Pies first rounder + Stephenson. Up until gambling fiasco mid 2019, he put in one of the best first 35-40 games in a long time. He would have been untouchable in Collingwood eyes.

I can’t see Collingwood paying up that much for 3 years of Gunston. Can’t see a deal getting done where both sides are happy. Gunston ends up staying.
