This thread is becoming increasingly popular, and to keep some sort of order, we will have some….

Rules of engagement:

1. Bring valid news or links to Twitter posts from notable sources. Don’t post screenshots or “some bloke just said on SEN” or what some “trade whisperer” has posted on a Facebook page.

2. Ignore what other team boards are putting up as trade offers. Don’t quote or bring them here either.

3. Don’t post “buckle up” for the lols.

4. If you can’t say anything nice about Worpel or CJ, don’t say anything at all. The continued slaps and backhanders are just going to be deleted.

I think you may be looking at it wrong.

The way I have always interpreted it is that we’ve got a very rich area to identity talented multicultural athletes, with the single goal of getting them into the Dandenong stingrays or gippsland power system. Both those junior teams do a terrific job of development, with likes of Treloar, Lynch, Petracca, Heppell, Roughie coming from one of the two.

It’s on us now to find those quality athletes. Admittedly, we’ve done a terrible job in the past but it’s something judged through a 5-6 year time horizon, I suppose.
Not denying that, but I'm not happy with the removal of our other Metro zones.

We've been absolutely screwed here.

The AFL's football operations team crunched the population data across the country before deciding on the new zones, with a 'score' being determined based on multicultural and Indigenous population within the region, as well as multicultural and Indigenous participation and current participation.

Yes Box Hill has a large multicultural population, but not one that will be playing AFL football. Shocking use of data we definitely should have argued against.

Before you say I'm being racist, Box Hill has been multicultural for at least 30 years and is yet to produce a multicultural AFL player. I think there is a fair amount of evidence it is not a fruitful talent breeding ground.
Cornering the Chinese market. Where is Nick Stone when you need him

Would have like to have got the Mornington Peninsula seeing we are at Dingley now, and try to work it like Geelong work the Bellarine Peninsula.

I had a thought last night....

If Butters is the prize in next years free agency / trade period, could it be possible that we have drafted 3 x SA players this year to support our trade hand for a deal with PA.

We now have quite a lot of attractive pieces in a potential Butters trade.

1 (HAW), 2 (GWS), 2 (HAW), 2 (STK), 4 (MELB)
Nairn, Schubert, LeRay

I know we keep contributing to the equalisation of the comp but we aren’t a charity either

He is a free agent
He either wants us or he doesn’t

Just not how it works.

We're ready now and need the big fish. He's a Restricted FA, and there is no doubt Port will match.
So we need to do the dance and give up assets in a trade.

Same thing is going to happen for Walsh.
Ditto if we want Bear

These players aren't a commodity. We drafted them because we want them. As has been said, we are a miniscule chance at Butters and only as a free agent. Humphrey is the one.

Yes but when a player wants to leave you don’t give up the world for a FA

There is a balance

People really need to let go of the Butters obsession...

It's pretty disappointing to see the amounts of posts on trade night and the days after (you may not have seen them, because I deleted them immediately) from people whose first thought wasn't "Welcome to Hawthorn, have a great career!" but ""They're from South Australia, trade bait for Butters!!"

No.

Always good to have one in your toolbox
Bashful GIF

If we're going to woo Butters to get his interest over Dogs, Cats and many other Vic sides, we can't then baulk at the trade cost.

We just did baulk at Trade cost a few weeks back. So you are wrong, we can baulk at tRaDe cost.

If any of those 3 draftees are showing delivering on serious potential, cost will vary very very fast.

I don't understand why this keeps coming up as a suggestion.

Basically, what this suggests is If Butters ultimately never even entertains coming to us (which is likely), then we've wasted draft resources on 3 players we didn't even want, plus a years worth of time spent developing them.

Why would a club do that?!
Not even North Melbourne or West Coast would do this.

People really need to get their head around the fact Butters ain't coming.

What a great message to send out to other players about how the family club operates......

It’s really annoying. The 3 SA players could all end up being seriously good players. Butters is exceptional but he’s one player.
EDIT bloody phone keeps chomping up my words and posted before I finished. I’ll keep it short. It would be an incredibly cynical strategy but also stupidly limited. 3 talented players with a lot of upside from interstate who happen to be good mates. Draft them together, help them settle, mitigate against homesickness and the go home factor. Now that makes a lot more sense as a sound strategy.
