Gunston discussion far from over. Hawks waiting on whether pies will deal first rounder + something else
Do you think we'd entertain a future first?
Collywobbles have a top 5 locked away next year so I can see them looking to trade out of the first round for immediate value

You'd imagine Phillips and Sier are guys they'd be quite willing to put on the table. Stephenson or Mihocheck at a push.

I was about to go into a screed about how their FS/academy kids this year and next could make things work around draft points but don't want to raise the stress levels of mods too much...

nah I honestly believe we need him - lets be totally honest who will kick goals next year - Patton, Lewis, TOB unreliable and not durable enough - you need these senior blokes on each line - there is no way I would trade him - he has a lot of good footy ahead of him

look at suns / GWS full of first rounders but unless you have good A graders around them - you see the results - wasn’t everyone saying when GWS started they will be that good they will win 5 flags in a row - an old coach told me whenI was a kid a champion team will beat a team of champions

That's the question, isn't it? Need him for what?

To keep Hawthorn competitive next year and beyond? To challenge for a premiership? To provide leadership?

There's certainly room for sentiment in AFL. We also have to be cautious how much experience we allow to walk out the door during this fragile transition.

For mine, though.. we only need to look at the blue print of 2003/2004; we traded players of experience (Jade Rawlings, Nathan Thompson, Mark Graham, Jonathan Hay) that held value. Consequently, that action (of attacking the draft) assembled our dynasty from 2008-2015.

word is the conversations are amicable and hawthorn won't entertain unless the right price. 1st rounder + Stephenson or Sharenberg the rumour

Huge no to Sharenberg. No more high draft picks from other clubs with suspect knees please!

Stephenson makes perfect sense. Rising star only 2 years ago in a grand final side.
Quick and classy around goals.

He just needs to mature a bit which is absolutely possible at a team like Hawthorn.

My preference is we keep Gunston and he is named captain though.

It is over hawthorn aren’t trading him Collingwood have nothing that they are willing to give up that we want and they need their first rounder in case someone bids on their academy player who is predicted to go high in the draft as well. Also Gunston don’t want to leave so that ends it alright there.

how on earth are scharenberg and stephenson equitable as trade pieces?

Not at all. There would be a big difference in terms of picks. Scharenberg would be pure steak knives on top of the first round pick. Stephenson would be more interesting.

I was at the 2018 Richmond Vs Collingwood prelim and Stephenson was lethal out of the square. He's not much of a pressure forward but there's so much talent to work with there. Just a matter of whether his problems this year are something that could derail his career long term.

If Gunston were to leave, I'd be gutted but would be excited if we could bring Stephenson in.

Something like

In: Stephenson, Col 2020 1st (likely ~18 after bids), 2020 2nd/3rd

Out: Gunston, NM 2020 second (likely ~ 27 after bids), Ess 2020 3rd (~40)

Gets Collingwood about the same points to match McInness and get Gunston. Hawthorn get Stephenson and into the later part of the first round this year. Finer details about pick swaps probably wildly off.

Thats why you get rid of a first rounder if you have a high academy kid, get a valued asset in, and match the points with later picks, the bulldogs will do the same

We all love Gunners but he's 28 and has delivered us 3 flags. If Pies offered their first rounder and a player then we would be mad not to take it. We need a injection of young talent, two firsts, pick 21 and Downie gives us this. We have to remember Sicily is out all year, it's the perfect time to take a step back to go forward.
