I’m thinking there is a few issues with Betts going around again next year.

1. His output. Less than a goal a game isn’t quite up to scratch.
2. The way he’s playing and we are playing him isn’t working. This could also be partly a failure of our game plan but he’s effectively played as a leading forward this year. We bomb it on his head or put it to his feet and just expect him to resolve whatever situation we put him in because he is Eddie Betts.
3. He is taking the spot of a young player we could be developing. This part is a little muddy because we don’t have a natural replacement, but having him in the team is papering over developing an effective offensive game with multiple small scoring options. I’d rather we spend a pre-season refining our offensive game and giving opportunities to guys who could eventually play there, be it Philp or Honey or Martin or Fisher. Create something that doesn’t ask too much of our forwards, focusing on quick ball movement rather than crumbing. Our midfielders are good enough at this when there are stoppages in our forward 50 anyway.

I’ve enjoyed watching Betts this year, but I think it’s time to move on and find some better long term options.

Thoughts on Isaac Smith to Carlton.
I realise he's 30, but he brings something we really. Outside run and a good ball user.
He also bridges a gap whilst we develop other players.
As he's a UFA, we don't have to trade with Hawthorn.

If Betts doesn’t get a contract I would be for it

Club has lost it if they think Betts is good enough to play on next year. Has applied good pressure at times but for the majority hasn’t been up to it.

It also Doesn’t send a great message about selection integrity to young kids/potential recruits that the Head Coach will play his mates (Betts, McGovern) over more deserving players.

The closest I have seen apply that would jed lamb and now Matt owies....amd for whatever reason umps ping them for bullshit reasons.

He even got rubbed out for unduly rough play, a charge often leveled against KPF's; in that final year with us before going to Adelaide. Or ot may have been another charge, but it was rough play

Betts needs to hang them up so we can play some young players in that position. Simpson probably for the same reason. Harder to see Simpson retire as he is still playing decent high effort football but we need to move on and have our future settled a bit more.

Murphy gets another year IMO, playing alright and the midfield isn't settled yet.

There might be a little short term pain playing some young players who at first probably won't be as good but long term will be worth it.

The timing is right. The team is mature enough to accomodate a few young players here and there.

Teague loves his ex players at Adelaide McGovern and Betts.
Watching Betts now he is averaging less than one goal a game and less than one goal assist per game.
If Teague thinks he still has what it takes just highlights he has no idea.
Sick of players gifted games then told by the coach that the young players have to earn it.
Players played out of position the whole year.
Strikes me as a coach who is stubborn.
Also tends to make no moves when things go pear shaped during games.
The Ivan Lendl of coaches ice cold no emotion.

There is definitely something to work with Owies.

I believe the same thing! I am shocked when I see people saying we should delist him. Definitely had speed, pressure and isn't afraid to tackle hard. I rate him and was very surprised he was dropped after his only game.

I think the combination of skill, grunt and winning mentality that Smith brings is what we need.
Even if he could only play 2/3 of games due to load management.
He is almost 32, but has been durable and I think could easily play 2 more years.

Smith also has experience on what it takes to be a premiership side. He could play a role similar to what Hodge did at Brisbane by bringing his leadership to the club. This would teach the younger guys what the culture of a successful club looks like.

Unless he out of nowhere develops the tank to play full-time mid, he will play mostly forward as a lead-up target in an already crowded forward line. How do we fit Curnow, McKay, McGovern/JSOS and DeGoey in the same forward line?

Great player, but we have bigger holes to fill.

I'm actually surprised at why Betts would choose to play on. At best he gives us a serviceable year.

Can't help but feel it would be selfishly motivated though, and we'll be getting more GOTY attempts over team play.

Get rid of McGovern and put JSOS up to the wing. I think JSOS would be perfect up on the wing.
