How would we know who has or hasn't gone past him...his form this year has not warranted never being dropped or managed
Meanwhile, the kids are twiddling their thumbs playing FIFA, COD and making tik tok videos in the hub
Oh...and if they're lucky to get a game, they are the first dropped
If I had a choice between retiring Murphy or losing any of the kids above, I'd retire Murphy in a heartbeat
I think that’s sort of his point, if those kids actually done something, anything then there would be no need to have Murphy on the list but they aren’t yet capable. The choice also isn’t going to be between those guys and Murphy, it’s between probably Murphy and someone like maybe Polson or a pick ~50 in the draft.

Well no...Bolton was all aboard the youth train, and when we put some senior bodies in the middle we got some W's. Age isn't a detractor.

It would be great if any of our juniors where sending Murph to a a flank...or the bench...or the seconds, but they're not even close.

I'd be happy for anyone to...Murph does two things well, runs hard and finds the pill. Someone just needs to do it better, or at least threaten to, and they can have his spot.

No, not threaten to, they need to show they can do it at least as well on a regular basis to take his spot. As soon as they show that Murph can step aside. Clearly at this stage nobody is right there challenging for his spot. If it happens during next season then all good. Nobody is being held back for him to keep his spot, the fact is nobody has earned it yet.

Eddie factor?-Never heard such rubbish in all my life. Do these boys need their hands held because Eddie can't play football anymore? Tributes for Gibbs, Testomonial years for Betts. When is Carlton about winning?

Personally, I think Eddie should hang up the boots but man, you really have little idea about what football clubs are and how they operate. Of course winning is the objective of a football team but if you don't know that football clubs are far more than just that then I don't know what anyone can say to you.

This is my starting line-up for next year. Assuming a fully-fit list:

There's a few there you could argue with/ flip a coin over (i.e. Fisher & Betts). I think we should be training McKay this off-season to pinch-hit in the ruck. Otherwise then it's Casboult in for JSOS.

Therre's a few others I'd place a question-mark against in terms of whether or not they are a walk-up start in round 1:
E Curnow (based on age)
M Murphy (same as above)
Kemp
Newman
Newnes
Marchy (been out of the game for so long so who knows)

I've assumed Kemp is a walk-up start (safe assumption IMO)

I've left out SPS as I just don't know where he fits in to the team. If the club is insisting he plays back, he just doesn't fit in, IMO.

This leaves retirements we already know about:
K Simpson
M Kreuzer

Should delist:
H Goddard
D Lang
H Macreadie
C Moore
F O'Dwyer
F Phillips
S Ramsay
B Silvagni (too many similar types in the team)

We should look at trading if there's any value (doubtful):
D Cuningham
P Dow
M Kennedy
M Gibbons
L O'Brien
C Polson

Continue developing:
J Honey
M Cottrell
M Owies
S Philp
M Pittonet
L Stocker

Let's assume for a minute that we pick up both Saad and Williams. That fills the hole on the HBF and would (arguably) replace one of Newman or Plowman.

That means we are left with a need to find a ready-made on-baller in my opinion. Don't care it takes, this is the one we should move heaven and earth to make happen. It's been a glaring need for a couple of years. We missed Shiel. We missed Coniglio. Just make it happen this year.

We also really need to add a quality FP. Fisher I expect to be good but he's not a natural forward. More of a mid who's been plonked down there to fill a need. Will do OK in that role but we could do better.

Then get in some fringe players (i.e. Graham) to help build some depth.

Surely Ramsay taken at pick 47 isn't delisted. Actually bullish on him, has some swagger and can use the ball well.

Cottrell or even Honey would go before him. (Not saying either should).

Yeah, and he's contracted for next year

I'm curious how the AFL will deal with this if clubs do have to delist day 5 players but the 5 they want to delist are contacted.

I mean the AFL moved the goal posts on them after all.

Cant see a problem with it, you just need to pay out their contract one would think?

Perryman again in the best players on a miserable night for GWS. Out of contract. Miles ahead of, for example, Newnes. Does a lot of things well that we need. Only Port linked to him. Would come in on lower dollars than Williams with much more upside as he’s only 21. (I get he’s a different type of player, but prefer his goals, GAs, I50s). No idea why we aren’t showing interest.
Good mates with Matty Kennedy, too. Both old-school country boys that'd have a ball in Navy Blue. But got a sick feeling MK might be on the edge and Perryman will be re-signed or go elsewhere.

So having a look at the list, we are at 47 in 2020.

So assuming 40 + 2 Rookies (Not sure what happens with Category B here?)

We need to delist/retire/trade around 10 allowing 3 for draft spots (which I think is the minimum still?) and trades.

Rookies first:
Josh Honey - Keep
Fraser Phillips - Keep (Purely as a need for small forwards, Would Delist and Keep Owies if we can't have 3.)
Michael Gibbons - Senior List
Matt Owies - Keep (Hoping Cat B Means we can have 3 rookies!)
Hugh Goddard - Delist
Matthew Cottrell - Delist (Hard call but I don't think he has done enough to be senior list and we have a bigger need for Owies as a small forward than Winger/HB)
Callum Moore - Delist

So we have 2 Rookies and 1 Cat B or 2 Rookies.

Senior List:

Assuming we bring in Williams, Saad and Wright. Just who I would like and of the 3 I am least keen for Saad. So Plus 3.

Keep:
JSOS
Dow
Murphy (Will need to have a discussion that we will be transitioning away from him as a midfielder and best 22)
LoB
SPS
Kennedy
Cripps
McKay
McGovern (Would love to trade but won't happen)
TDK
Stocker
Liam Jones
Doc
Kemp
Walsh
Plowman
Martin
Machbank
Weitering
Newman
Fisher
Macreadie (Also retained as backup for Jones and injury)
Pittonet
Cuningham
Polson (We need a small defender, worth persisting.)
C Curnow
Williamson
Newnes
Ramsay
Philp
E Curnow
BSOS (Know the rumours, but we need a replacement for Jones and need to start developing someone now)
Setterfield

(33)

Senior Additions:
Gibbons
Saad
Williams
Wright
(37 Total)

Plus 3 for Draft makes 40. + 2 Rookies and 1 Cat B.

Retired or Should:
Simpson
Kruze
Betts
Levi Casboult (Replaced by Peter Wright)

Delist:
Lang
Finbar

46 on the list (39/6/1).
Nobody knows what the list make-ups will be in 2021, or what rules will apply.

Would still have to be included in your soft cap.
I would have thought that there would be some wriggle room. As the contracts would have been drawn up with full size lists in mind. The reduction of lists could not have been anticipated and therefore not been taken into account with list management strategies, which can be years in the making.
