The name McLean keeps coming up here.

I must be missing something. I don't him as a need at all. What do others see and who would he replace in our best team, all being fit?

Would give us another option as a high pressure half forward. Might allow someone like Cuningham to push up into the midfield.

There might be a connection there with Nick Austin if one was to speculate.

Right....Forgot about that connection.
Let's raid the Dogs the way SOS raided GWS.. :)

A guy who relies on winning free kicks by ducking. I am with you he is a B grader without much upside, that won't make our team substantially better. PASS

I posted this in an earlier discussion about McLean...

It's not so much about bringing something we don't have, but rather something that we could have more of, in which case he brings plenty.

Experience, skill, flexibility

He is not a star, but ticks a lot of boxes for us, and would be a more than handy addition at the right price.

I’m a little bit like this. The problem is the players we need every side does. Their wouldn’t be a club out there saying they don’t need quick, two way running good ball uses. They are hard to find.
For me it’s still the same as the start of the year in that we should go all out for Papley and Williams and if we miss then guys like Petruccelle might be worth a shot but I wouldn’t go breaking the bank for a mid who isn’t perfect.

Next year our three starting mids should be Cripps, Walsh and Setterfield. If Setterfield doesn’t become a very good player like we hope he does then hopefully one of Stocker, Dow, SPS, Philip, Kemp ect do. Again if they don’t then maybe we have to run with Curnow as a tagger and hope that he can breakeven and that Cripps and Walsh are better then their opponents, which we would expect that they will be most weeks.
If we miss Williams then imo we need to be targeting a wingman. If LOB is a bust then we are very short on talent out there because there is no way in hell we used pick 1 on Walsh to play wing. Someone like B Smith may be worth talking to if we want a quick fix and he would still have 3-4 year left playing when we should be contending.
in saying that I think we would be absolutely crazy to go the the draft with a first rounder and had not of had a crack at Caldwell.

Feel we will have seen some great growth this year with Setterfield and Kennedy’s games both careers held back by injuries...
Both bigger body type players but different styles and strengths altogether, they are just starting too look comfortable and are on the way up, but all shouldn’t be played in midfield at once...

Personally i like the 60-70game level were players heading into forth years are much fairer and better to judge, injuries and development paths all varying...

Playing in a good or strong team supported by great players helps their development twofold, a lot of our kids have done it the hard way which we had no choice

Setterfield 22yrs 10/30 games
Kennedy 23yrs 5/46 games
P-Seton 22yrs 10/74 games
Cunners 23yrs 9/34 games
Fisher 22yrs 2/57 games
Walsh 20yrs 10/32 games
Dow 20yrs 1/40 games
Stocker 20yrs 0/5 games
Philp 19yrs 2/2 games
Kemp 19yrs 0/0 games

Williamson 21yrs 8/25 games
O’Brien 20yrs 0/35 games
Cottrell 20yrs 1/1 game

These are all draftees that were selected as midfielders, as we know for development reasons Fisher SPS Cunners have played other roles and missing through injury some have been slow too come on through hardly any continuity...
Dow and Cunners can make a huge difference in there I don’t think they’re that far off while Fisher Walsh and SPS are anothers that bring a completely different set of midfield skills as well...
We need to better the balance with who we have in there someone like Williams or of the ilk along with the growth of these youngsters would give us another dimension..
Stocker Kemp and Philp are all exciting prospects but won’t be making the kind of impact that makes our midfield more dangerous or stronger from where their development sits at atm....

Seriously think Carlton are one of the better destinations for him (assuming Cripps is there for life). He'd be able to come in as the 2nd/3rd midfielder, eventually overtaken by Walsh, but able to play full time midfield minutes. He's wasted up forward, but is capable of becoming a 25-30 disposals/game, 10 goals/season type of player

He wouldn't be our 2nd/3rd midfielder next year, but I see no reason why he couldn't be a part of the rotation.

Cops a bad rap due to his ducking antics but looking beyond that he's a very decent footballer who would be a good get for plenty of clubs, including Carlton.

He's not someone you're going to pay a whole lot for, but at the right price he'd absolutely be a very worthwhile addition.

Forgot to add on maybe another tough quick great skilled midfielder OCC and just happens to be on GWS list that I’ve got a bid opinion of is Xavier O’Halloran 20yrs 187cm 86kg #22 2018 draft Western Jets only played the 1 game... again you would get him for a later pick earlier 3rd round maybe 30-40...

This is how old our “young” mids/chop outs turn next year

Kennedy 24
Cuningham 24
SPS 23
Setterfield 23
Fisher 23
Dow 22
LOB 22
Stocker 21
Walsh 21

Philip 20
Kemp20

there was a post in one of these threads way back that showed it’s an exception to the rule for a really good AFL mids to not already be a good players in their fourth year. All our guys will nearly be at that stage next year

Next year will be huge for some of these youngsters, too see some take it up another level would be bloody amazing... Injury free and game time is vital, we could make a significant jump if all goes well...

Kennedy 24 - has had a better than expected year and hitting prime. think your touted rule applies here and we can expect kennedy to be a B-grader but at best...but he fills that need and compliments Cripps well.

Cuningham 24 - Strange one as he's had injuries but yeah would now be surprised if he became an AA player. Rule applies.

SPS 23 - 4th year now and has shown good signs. I think he will make it as an A-grader when he gets played as an actual mid.

Setterfield 23 - exception to the rule as really hes only played a seasons worth of footy. I think he makes it but still too early to tell.

Fisher 23 - injury cruelled him so give it another 12 months.

Dow 22 - next year is the 4th year...wanna see big things between now and then

LOB 22 - ditto Dow

Stocker 21 - kid

Walsh 21 - already a gun

Geelongs Brandon parfitt is out of contract.
Tough midfielder who can play inside/outside and can find the goals. Won't cost the world in picks/player swap and salary.

Yes please; he's an absolute gun.

There's no way Geelong will let him go though.

Biiiiig tackler. Averaging a ridiculous 7.1 tackles this season.

Hes out of contract so a good fair offer will get him.
Geelong will want to keep him but getting brad crouch in will possibly squeeze him or Narkle out.

Geelong have a fair few mids who are approaching a cliff, some quicker than others. They'll be desperate to keep someone of Parfitt's quality.

They'd much sooner push Narkle out.

They're surely not that stupid.

They're going to have Ablett's contract off their books, and Taylor's not long for the comp either. Maybe they've funds to keep hold of Parfitt, but only if he's determined to stay.

Can we please stop mentioning Daicos in this thread.. It is the most ludicrous suggestion i have seen raised, forget the fact he is the son of a club great.. he is a kid who just had a break out game and is in the process of establishing himself in the collingwood team. The pies wont let him go, and the kid should not want to leave..
And will be playing with his brother soon. (Who by all accounts is an out an out gun junior).
