Barker is tougher than a cockroach (and probably a worse midfield coach).
He will literally be the last one standing.

I, for one, welcome our new assistant coach Overlord, and would like to remind him that as a trusted BigFooty moderator I can be helpful in rounding up others to support him.

With the potential reduction in list size to 35 or so, players most at risk are:

Simmo, Lang, Eddie (although I hope he sticks around longer), McCreadie, Polson, Ed, BSOS, Finbar, Moore, Owies, Goddard, Cottrel.

Wouldn’t have thought any of these players have a contract beyond this year.

Also don’t think we’d be losing much relative to other teams so would help level the playing field with our depth level at the poorer end.

My thought for today is: The AFL only needs to maintain a salary cap - no need to force player number changes. Leave it up to clubs to decide their own list numbers and salary plans. Of course that would provide Clubs with too much responsibility I guess - but how do Clubs keep some sort of 'reserve grade' team going with only 35 players? the other silly rule is a forced culling of X number of players to make way for X number of draftees - again- why the imposition - let Clubs decide.

as for your list of players at risk of losing their place - no surprises - but I think you'll see Ed Curnow not anyone's list to retire.

I guess with an 35 man list, can we afford to keep Ed? I get his current value to the team.

We would need to keep a mix of existing best 22 as well as enough spots for future best 22 players.

It seems a bit unusual. Why? This crisis has wiped out this AFL season -most likely completely, but only a huge pessimist would anticipate that next years season would be affected. So what good would a reduction in list sizes do next year/ Unless it is the AFL using this as an excuse to make changes that they have been thinking about for a long time.
The theory is that every club will lose $5 mill - $10 mill this year and if 8 players or so are cut off the list then next years (and the following years) expenditure will be down by approx $2.5 mill.

Keep in mind that this is about TPP cuts more than it is about players, so I suspect senior backups will be the ones to take a hit.

I doubt they'd count or expect Cat B to be a factor, though for the internationals, you might see them go home for at least a few months.

Will lose? Or would have lost if there wasnt the mass sackings and the player salary cuts?

Is our club well placed or left exposed in relation to chasing new players for next year?

it’s been reported the salary cap will take a hit and lust sizes cut. It has been raised that all players may need to renegotiate current contracts.

If this happens, I see the Giants in big trouble and really exposed, they have 4-5 good players out of contract this year, with 3 of them being free agents. The potential gap between what the Giants can offer and opposition could be even greater than usual.

Will our decision to front end Martins contract hamstring us going forward, or de we still have room to move cap wise?

The club was trying to recruit all three of Coniglio, Papley and Martin last season. The fact that we only got Martin would suggest we've still got enough room for one or two more high quality recruits.

GWS are in the window to win a flag. They'll find a way to keep the older players. It will be the younger potential stars that are rotting away in the NEAFL that will need to be moved on.

E.g. Ian Hill who would be perfect for us as a small forward.

min normal circumstances I may have agreed but have always thought Williams would be left with the smallest share and be prime for a raid.

im specifically talking if the salary cap is reduced, how will it effect teams who are right on the edge, compared to others.

I read yesterday of the possibility of all contracts needing re negotiating, if that happens, the Giants may only be able to offer Whitfield or Cameron say $600,000 but others might still be able to offer over $1M.

Fortunately for Charlie McKay, he got preseason games in and impressed. His coach saying the penny has dropped and he can't be tackled helps his cause.

Who's giving Eddie a contract in 2021 if we don't play another game & we also land Papley?

Don't think it's going to be a year of high profile player movement, especially if clubs end up in a situation where they're required to cut 8-10 players at seasons end.

But yes, if we land Papley, Eddie would probably retire.
