He beat up on a few poor sides but did next to nothing when playing against top 8 sides.

He's an OK prospect and nothing more IMO. Probably looks slightly better than he is as a prospect given the absolute mediocrity he's surrounded by on the field on a weekly basis. Certainly not someone I'm paying much to lure to the club - we can use that money far more effectively.
Ha what? The guy is a huge talent, absolute gun in the making.

I don’t see it, but I’ve been wrong on these things before and I’ll be wrong again.

We’ll see.
Just some of his games last year:

11 tackles and 7 inside 50s v Richmond
5 goals 3 behinds, 16 disposals, 6 inside 50s v Saints
5 goals 2 behinds, 16 disposals, 4 inside 50s v Blues
3 goals, 15 disposals, 6 insides 50s v Bombers
3 goals, 14 disposals, 8 marks v Eagles
9 tackles v Hawks

He's 21yo and has played 29 games, still has huge upside and can be a dynamic De Goey like player imo.

Has had some standout games, absolutely.

Don’t see him as at all similar to JDG who is a much more dynamic footballer.

Zurhaar 189cm 90kg
De Goey 188cm 92kg

Both use their pace to good effect, Zurhaar more physical, De Goey more skillful. But both very well-rounded X-factor players.

Think it's a very apt comparison given De Goey is 24 and has played 89 games versus Zurhaar's 21yo/29 games.

Its clear as day pick 9 was on the table for Papley. My guess is we wanted either a 2nd or 3rd back for him.

If this was what transpired, id be very disappointed in SOS and our recruiting team. I doubt it would be true, as i feel Sydney would have laughed us out of the room.
I can only assume we offered pick 9 and that was pretty much it, im pretty comfortable with that, i would have liked us to offer slightly more to seal the deal, but maybe we did.

Probably was just 9 on the table. Sydney didn't want 9. I doubt they would have taken a pick between 4-8 either. They were hell bent on retaining him

And yet they were prepared to offer that pick to Essendon as part of the deal for Daniher.

Our offer was not the issue here.

Probably too early to speculate, but if the AFL reduce lists for next season down to 35 plus additional for injuries how will this affect our playing list? Do we extend Simo and Eddie or place them in additional. How will this season affect player contracts? ie those in their last season fighting to hold a spot?

Plenty of unknowns at the moment.

My guess is we would keep one on for 2020, at most. Every chance both retire at the end of the year particularly if they do reduce list sizes as looks probable.

Good question - has been discussed at length on different media outlets, but at the moment everything seems to be up in the air. Most analysts tend to agree that list sizes will be smaller - whether it's 35 obviously still to be determined, but a good discussion point.

Liam Pickering's view as a player manager was that contracted players would still need to be paid out their contract if they were cut from the list, so it may be the players uncontracted at the end of 2020 who could be sweating at this time.

That's a fair list to start with. Interesting thoughts by Liam and understand where he is coming from but it will be interesting to see how that pans out as all players are taking a hit.

Is it too early/premature to discuss possibly trading Paddy Dow ?

I like the kid, but for whatever reason, he simply has not come on as we had hoped (mind you, our young player development has not been all that stellar either)

He may want to ask for a trade anyway (anyone know his contract status ?)

One of the most talented forwards we've ever seen. Not just at Carlton, but across the entire competition.

He'll be remembered as a phenomenal footballer, but equally if not more so as someone who never got the best out of himself due to his attitude and life off the field.

Currently sits at #30 on the all time goal kicking list, but absolutely had the talent to sit inside the top 10. And he has nobody to blame but himself that he's not there.
Yeah I agree completely could have been an all time great if not for his poor attitude and decision making, watching some of Charlie’s highlights from 18’ and 19’ really hit home for me just how good this kid could be, has all the attributes to be one of the great forwards of his era with his athleticism and smarts with his body work, the Doggies game when we played him out of the square for a good chunk of the game showed just how good he was one vs one in the square as opposed to being the lead up man and really emphasised just how talented he is in all aspects of forward craft, let’s hope he can recover fully from his patella injury and get back to playing the sort of footy he is capable of and not end up another one like Fev who wastes his god given talent. Charlie to the Square, Harry CHF.

Like many (although for me fairly normal) I have plenty of time on my hands, so an assessment of candidates for retirement, delisting or trade would likely include the following players. Some clearly have been added given the likely pressure to reduce list size. While I am aware the AFL is spruiking significant pressures regarding economic and therefore list reductions, it is difficult to see a drop from 44 (plus) on lists to 35 in the space of a season. My assessments, however are done with a view to that happening. With a developing list, also in need of experienced on field mentorship and presence, it will create some real conundrums.

LANG - Almost certainly one of the first to go. Has been unable to command a regular top 22 spot and has lapsed in to the category of adequate role player, rather than fulfilling his earlier promise at the Cats. Fair to say injury has had a major contribution to his demise. No "must have" attributes for retention.

MOORE - Last on first off! His addition was a while coming and likely to be driven by the injury prone tall forwards in front of him. A solid player, capable of excelling at the lower level. Surely only survives if we have multiple lingering issues whenever this season finally closes.

POLSON - Has earned praise from coaches (DT and SD were complimentary in recent podcast). Clearly a goer, given a last chance to establish a niche down back. I was a fan early, but often underwhelmed by his lack of skill execution over the journey. Would need some VFL action to push his claims or hard to see being retained.

MACREADIE - Conspicuous by his absence for most of the last two years. Clearly has been highly regarded internally exhibited by being pitchforked in to the ones to cover injury after one game back last season. For me, would rather persist with the reliable Goddard or developing BSOS than gamble on what HM has potentially. Many players use enforced absence to build their bodies and ready them for AFL, yet HM shows little physical advancement.

SIMPSON - The old soldier has to be a retirement if heavy restraints are placed on list spots. Would be under severe scrutiny even if not the case, despite his dedication and desire to continue as long as possible. Has long had some flaws, well covered by his work ethic. As he slows marginally some are more evident. His disposal is not consistent enough for mine, and I often wonder what his impressive sweeping does to his defensive mates regarding structures when opts incorrectly on the opposition's forward entry.

BETTS - His acquisition was heavily debated internally. With current list sizes, I thought it was a no brainer that he brought enough to the list, both playing and mentoring. Still do, but another year on with his recent calf injury highlighting his mortality and clearly from preseason and the exhibition game, his peak powers are behind him despite still commanding a good defender and being a threat if given a metre. Hopeful he will be retained in a coaching/mentoring capacity, but this is hard to see with the soft cap reductions.

KREUZER - Will be discussed. If his body is no worse at season's end than he has been carrying in recent times, I would be in favour of retaining the big fella, albeit on a reduced salary. He could assume the mantle as unofficial ruck coach and offer back up to our young tyros. Yes back up. 12 months on TDK will be ready for the mantle, and I believe PITTONET is already up to mixing it consistently with the leagues big boppers. Retaining MK would allow a kid to be drafted and developed, rather than a journeyman third banana being brought in as back up.

MURPHY and E.CURNOW will be discussed, but both will run on single year contracts and be critical unless a couple of our midfield kids step up big time when the season gets going.

KENNEDY - I rejoiced when this bloke was added to the list. Has been cruelled by injuries, limiting his mobility and training loads. Ankle issues continue, but I suspect also a has a degenerative bone on bone knee as brought about the demise of AW1. (See Plowman similar) Hoping he survives. A genuine, smart footballer under pressure from the physical pressured nature of the modern game. Highly regarded internally, but they will be practical. Intriguing.

O'DWYER - Left Finbar a bit later as I think the club is pleased with his progress. Training with Gibbo during the lockdown won't do him any harm either. For those of us on the outside, it is hard to see him surviving a heavy cut, but there is upside, he came from a long way back physically when drafted.

OWIES - Quite impressive at the lower level and saw some good things on the track at Qld camp. Cat B rookie and it will be interesting if they keep special status outside the regular list. Have to say, he would need to force a few games at the top level this year to be confident of retention. Small forwards are more instinctive and rarely "created". It is a big step to the "big league".

GODDARD - Many will have big Hugh gone as he looks well behind Weiters, Jones, Marchy, Cas and Plow in the tall back stakes. May get down to him V BSOS and Macreadie as depth/developing. To date, he is certainly streets ahead on exposed form, but lack of pace (due to injury) may count against. Bloody good depth while providing a pillar to our next incarnation of seconds.

B.SILVAGNI - I am a little loath to throw him in here as I am happy at what I have seen on field. With smaller lists, it is essential to have all players fully focussed. Only insiders will have an inkling as to his levels of commitment. Decent up forward, but see him as the Jones replacement long term. The other factor when assessing tall defenders is where Brodie Kemp is going to sit in the equation.

COTTRELL - Another it would be harsh to quit on. Showing plenty, although a little hard to see where he pushes in to the top team barring significant injuries.
Running machine, with pace to go with his elite endurance. Not lacking in the skill department either. Possessions a bit light at the lower level to date is perhaps the knock. Would be desperately unlucky to get the chop.

Recently rookied HONEY and PHILLIPS have both impressed on the track and in the gym and would be distressing to part with them without significant opportunity to show their wares. Expectation would be that Kemp, Philp and Ramsay are safe with two year contracts, aside from impressions to date.

NEWNES - Probably a one year deal may be questioned if performances not up to scratch. Some have mentioned GIBBONS in this conversation, I just can't
see it, doing well learning a new role while striving for more minutes in the guts. Mature, pretty much dual sided, albeit good, but not elite

Barring left field trades, it is likely the rest of the list would avoid scrutiny in this area. There are some impressive names on that list, so it will be a thankless task wielding the axe. Maturity versus promise, depth versus developing, how will they go about it?

Good job Coona, like you I just can’t see them reducing list sizes to 35 in one hit or even long term to be honest, I saw some figures on the last 5-6 premiers and they all used up around 35 players for that year and as we all know you need some luck with injuries to win a flag, even the Tigers with there exceptional run with injuries still used close to 35 in there flag years. I think the bare minimum would need to be 38 and probably 40 to be safe anything less and you start having to bring in supplemental players which would add a whole other list of problems both logistically and financially, plus would severely disadvantage clubs still trying to build a winning team not having access to development players.

Did Pickering mention anything regarding, renovating contracts? It has been discussed a lot already, that all contracts will need doing again, if the salary cap is reduced and taking in to account, this season there will be 5 less games.
It doesn't look like that situation would affect us, as we have a lot out of contract, but i can see, a lot of changes being made going forward.

Good insights, what's not to be left out of these discussions, is, if we cut the list down to 32-35 or whatever number that may be, most of the players cut, will be retained in the reserves and be available as top up players if required. It won't be ideal for a lot of them, but the avenue will still be there.

It is possible to make that assumption. If they are cost cutting, it is difficult seeing this as profitable for players to hang around when there is decent money to be made in minor leagues. We then have the danger of quitting a kid and having another club swoop if they thrive. So many unknowns. I do agree a "supplemental list" scenario is likely, but would be cumbersome.

Wouldn’t get a lot for him in current form, pick 35-40 maybe? No real point doing that we need mids, Hopefully diesel can work through some short falls. He’s 20 years old, expectations are way too high for him. Now having to compete harder for a spot will hopefully push him to deliver that extra 10% polish which is lacking.
If only they all hit the ground running at AFL level like Cripps and Walsh....
