Why is it that high draft picks with huge upside come to Carlton and become mediocre is it our system our development or what
Stocker should be competing and growing game by game but no not at Carlton
I wonder if we drafted d Martin would he be the same a lost footballer due to our so called system it’s a joke let the players play to their strengths not curtail them as we do
And for god sake teach these guys how to kick a football in front of goal
There was always a big question mark over Stocker's endurance, and SPS' draft year was not up to the standard of the reputation he had as a 16 year old. Dow's disposal was always a problem and it was insinuated that O'Brien didn't have enough going for him to warrant the draft pick we selected him with. We can argue the chicken versus egg scenario of recruitment versus development all we like but I personally think we have over-finessed with our recruitment. However, the players we did pick are under the disadvantage of a lack of inspiration from a list that lacks grit.

Marchbank for another two years is fantastic, truly believe if he can get healthy he's a borderline AA talent. Could be our version of Haynes.

Murphy on the other hand... I'm fine with him playing on next year but TWO YEARS? Jesus Christ man, should be one year deals for him here on out. Not happy about that one at all.

EDIT: Read somewhere Murphy was offered two years, only one. Thank christ.

Woah, where does it say 2 years? HSun article is behind a paywall

It has become very clear that we need to bolster our midfield. We’re too shallow (not enough guys go through there) and one dimensional (no real outside speed and quality ball movement).

Ideally we improve the midfield through a combination of trade/FA and development of youngsters on our list. I’d look at Williams for an outside midfield role if we can nab him.

All of Cunners, Kennedy, SPS, Setterfield, Fisher, Dow, LOB, Walsh, Stocker, Philp and Kemp have been drafted or recruited to be midfielders or at least potential midfielders. Many are too young to call (mainly Philp and Kemp) but others have been in the system for 5 years (Kennedy and Cunners). At the moment, Walsh is a star and Setters is developing well. All the others either aren’t in the seniors or have barely got midfield minutes in the seniors. Apart from Walsh and Setters, this group has more questions than answers attached to them. We’ve invested a lot in them and really we don’t know, at least definitively, whether (beyond Walsh and Setters) any will make it as quality midfielders. The development of these guys will go a long way to whether and how quickly we can ascend up the ladder. If no others come through, we won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. If a couple can really step up for next year, we could see a rapid rise.

Marchy signed on afl.com.au is reporting for a further 2 years.

AFL.com.auunderstands the 23-year-old Marchbank has signed a new two-year contract that will tie him to the Blues until the end of 2022.

Liam Jones has a deal for 2022, while fellow defender Lachie Plowman is on the verge of an extension and veterans Marc Murphy and Levi Casboult have agreed to deals to stay for 2021

Small forward option - Sydney Stack. Reckon the Tigers might cut those two. Not our problem, but worth an enquiry if they do. Fails the D-head factor, but Eddie, Jack, Sammy, Jonesy and the captains would get him in line.

Seriously!

Sorry for the long post. Was having a look at OOC players along with players that have been mentioned on here. The list below would be something I would do and think it makes us a much better outfit. Took me a while to do and would allow us to keep our picks next year for a big fish mid (Kelly).

Hopefully list sizes are not cut to 40 this year as it makes it so hard having to cut 9 good players before any trades. Players I would be looking at this year are.

Witherden – (Second round pic?) Don’t know much about him except he has great skills, going at 75% disposal efficiency this year.
Saad – (Dow * Need inside Mid) Offers speed which we desperately need off HB and great disposal efficiency at 80% this year
Williams – (FA) Fast and great foot skills going at 70% Disposal Efficiency this year.
Cockatoo – (3rd Round Pick) Great player if we could fix his injuries could be anything
Polec – (O’Brien & North pay half his wage) Upgrade on O’Brien. But is 28yo next year which is a negative, could be a match winner though. Would offer us better disposal inside 50 than Newnes, going at 70% disposal efficiency
Papely – (Pick 5-7 & SPS) All has already been said

Best 22

B: Witherden (DEF) … Jones (DEF) … Marchbank (DEF/WING)

HB: Saad (DEF) … Weitering (DEF) … Docherty (DEF/MID)

Mid: Polec (WING) … Cripps (MID/FWD) … Walsh (WING/MID)

HF: Martin (FWD/MID) … McKay (FWD/ RUCK) … Papely (FWD/MID)

F: Silvagni (FWD/MID/DEF) … Curnow (FWD/MID) … Cockatoo (FWD/MID)

Fol: DeKoning (RUCK/FWD) … Williams (MID/DEF) … Setterfield (MID)

Bench: Fisher (FWD/MID) … Casboult (FWD/RUCK) … Cuningham (FWD/MID) …. Curnow (MID)

Delist/ Trade/ Retire/ Relist

Dow (Trade), SPS (Trade), Simpson (Retire), Lang (Delist), O’Dwyer (Delist), Goddard (Delist), Betts (Retire), Moore (Delist), O’Brien (Trade), Cottrel (Delist), Owies (Delist), Honey (Relist), Kreuzer, Ramsay (Relist), B. Silvagni (Relist)

Draft

4th Round Pick –
Honey
5th Round Pick –
Ramsay
6th Round Pick – B. Silvagni

Wouldn’t mind somehow looking at Narkle or Jye Simpkin but it would involve losing more players.

Reserves & Depth

Defender
– Plowman, Macreadie, B. Silvagni, Newman, Polson, Williamson
Midfield – Murphy, Kennedy, Stocker, Kemp, Newnes, Philp
Ruck – Pittonet
Forward – McGovern, Phillips, Honey, Ramsay, Gibbons

Absolutely rapt that we have signed Marchbank. I truly expect he and Macreade to be a part of our best 22 more from 2021 onwards.
Happy we have signed Murphy for another year as well. He is still needed and I expect he’ll play as a secondary midfielder via rotations.
Simmo - as much as I feel he is still one of our better weekly contributors, I feel he might be playing his last games, which I would be truly sad, as he has been fantastic this year. Hope the club find a spot for another year, on the proviso he might not play 22 games and be managed through as needed.

It could be as simple as poor recruiting, who knows?
It’s funny because we always put it down to poor development but it’s almost impossible to know. I look at a side like Geelong and think they are brilliant at development yet so many of their most talented/highest picks have been failures. How can you be good at developing less talented players but not your apparent high end talent? It doesn’t add up.

Things can also change bloody quickly and hopefully for us it clicks for a couple of the younger guys soon

things can certainly turn around - I mean, look at Polson. What a great story he can be if he continues his improvement and cements his place in our team as a regular 👍

Was only a few years ago that some on this board wanted a 2nd rounder for Weitering.
Petracca was a dud until now he has proven he is a superstar, at 24.
Dow hasn't impressed me this year but if the club sees something in him I'd give it a bit longer.
