I don’t disagree with any of this, but I do find it quite funny how you can be so half empty with a guy like Papley yet can speak so glowingly about Dow who has shown next to nothing in comparison.

Dow is 20 years old ffs most of the up and coming mids, like Setters, are 22 before they are playing consistent AFL footy and 24 before becoming really good players, another pre season of hard work on his running and running patterns and a simplification of his core responsibilities and we will see a 21 year old Dow that could well be ahead of the curve, and before people mention Cerra and Brayshaw we will see where they are at compared to Dow at the end of next year after an injury free pre season and a good run into next year.

The thing about Cerra and Brayshaw is that I saw the same “trade them” discussions on the Freo board at about round 5. The difference is that they have had a good run at it this year in terms of injury. We will end up trading some of these high picks and some won’t make it, but as Stamos suggested, we have the picks to trade for players this year. It would be ludicrous to trade someone like Dow unless someone comes after him with a great offer for us.

Most of what we have seen from him has been as a teenager, where he has averaged about 18-19 disposals per game as a mid. I understand there are question marks but his upside is huge. I sometimes feel as though these “burst” type players can get lost a bit in trying to get the right balance between utilising their burst and having the endurance necessary for AFL. I still feel like it is a confidence issue with him. Maybe he won’t make it, but I would be pretty down if we just cut him now at age 20.

To be fair you’ve prefaced the Dow argument with the Weitering argument. That everyone thought we should trade Weitering, now that some think we should trade Dow. Not true.

Everyone can speak for themselves but obviously big players take time, that’s a given, that’s something most subscribe too. I didn’t read the forum in the Kennedy days but I assume it was the same. Bad hands can’t mark dud.

Neither have been a question for me SPS has shown so much more than Dow. Paddy Dow is an entity of his own in these discussions

There's plenty of posts on this board saying Dow's a bust. Get rid of him. They're there for you to read.

Sad part for Dow was he was played when not physically ready in a very thin midfield group that had minimum defensive runners .. until we have a good pathway and a strong VFL side( whichever form that takes post COVID ) we will have many Dow's and slow burn draft picks .. last year we played three ruckman in the VFL Side and a handful of rubbish part timers and player on there way out . two of the ruck since since since delisted .

For us? Hard to argue.
These sorts of players make a difference on multiple fronts.

We can look at stats alone but the Greene and Papley types add something that many others don't have......and when I see Butlers name get put against Papleys....well....best not say.

IMO greene is at least 1 level above Papley.

Papley a top 50 player.

Greene a top 15.

A player I wouldn't mind us looking at is Toby Bedford. Hasn't come on at Melbourne but his speed would add a lot to our forward half. Better prospect then the likes of Petruccelle imo should we go that route.

same way Dow turns 21 this year. Papley was only drafted one year later then he would otherwise have been.

I think it is too but in saying that there are major holes in his game which I can see why people would have huge concerns about him turning it around. I don’t understand the Papley comparison when he was absolutely miles ahead of Dow and already a good AFL player at the same age.

Sounds like Papley peaked very early in his career.

Has only kicked 3 goals since round 8.

I Like Paps. If we don’t have other viable options, I think it’d certainly be worth us parting with a mid 3rd to get him.

Bit of both I think.

It’s funny because a guy like McKay is almost a year younger then Curnow and only two years older then Stocker. Dow is also only three months older then Stocker. Marchbank is only a month or two older then Curnow.
Harry and Weitering are only a couple of months older then Setterfield and SPS.

for most of these guys we judge off time in the system more so then age.
