Damn, the Cannabis referendum got a lot closer than originally indicated...

A majority voted against the legalisaton of recreational cannabis, 50.7 per cent voting “no” and 48.4 per cent voting “yes”. There was a fractional change for the End of Life Choice referendum, with 65.1 per cent voting “yes” and 33.7 per cent voting “no” - a 0.1 per cent shift towards “no”

And unfortunately my understanding is that's akin to the 1999 Republic vote here, where legalising cannabis is still generally supported, but the specific legislation was itself divisive and split the vote in general favour. Hopefully doesn't kill the issue there in the way 1999 killed that issue here!

Bit of a campaign thing as well, some fearmongering among the usual anti-drug people, and some claim its Jacindas fault because she chose not to disclose her vote before the election. She voted yes two both referendums.

Admittedly fortuitous timing with COVID - back in February she was staring down the barrel of defeat.
Never in real doubt. The opposition is borderline hopeless and she was always well in the hunt for re-election. She's a gem. Unlike our salesman-in-chief.
