I didn't watch the opening game, except for about a minute in the third quarter because i wanted to see the stands empty

I noticed it was very echo-y

Was the game any good?
Saw bits and pieces. The best parts I saw were McGovern's keystone cops moments.

Serious question..with port having one of the lower profit margins (article below said it was only in the 100 000's last year) and stadiums in all probability having crowd bans until end of september..could port 'celebrate' their 150th year by going bust?

There you go GROTTO and anything else who thinks they are playing for Greed

I thought it showed that lack of crowd can have an impact. Carlton, to their credit, came back at the Tigers in the last and Richmond started to panic. They’d dropped their work rate and either looked buggered or lazy, while blues were full of finishing - even McGovern did a couple of decent things after being crap in the first three quarters. Blues start was quite laconic and think only had 13 tackles to half time. i kind of liked being able to hear the players yell at each other.

Interesting g that Carlton scored 8 of their goals from free kicks.

Also interesting that Richmond often burn teams late in quarters. Perhaps 16 minute quarters will have an equalising effect?

Lot of the frees were there And many more weren’t paid! Richmond were playing very unsociable footy I thought.

Do you reckon players think about that ?? I don't.

After last night I cant see this continuing much longer into a season. It's just not as good a look as the league probably though it would be

You wouldn’t think about your employer possibly going under?

If it doesn't continue, it will be because of a coronavirus outbreak, not because "it's not a good look". Perhaps, your view is that of someone who can attend home matches? Here, in NSW, it was business as normal for me, and the lack of a crowd was irrelevant.

On the other hand, the lack of an audience on Mad as Hell made the viewing experience very lame!

Couldnt The AFL exist going forward if this season was mothballed, players/coaches/staff take a maximum $100k payment to get through. No activity at all.

Absolute minimal expenses.

Then ramp back up next year with all clubs surviving.

This is something many businesses will consider. QANTAS publicly doing it this week.

Nobody laughing made Micallef sound a bit crazy.

I worked for a company whos been in the news a lot in recent years about being bought out due to budgetary issues, ironically its been in the news for all the right reasons lately. I was aware of it, but my thought process was to put it completely out of my mind.

The lack of crowd is hardly irrelevant, and yes I know itll be a corona enforced break. The players will tire of it though, like most leagues around the world.

I reckon the players would be acutely aware of the AFL's situation as would airline staff.

Players at some clubs would be more than others, but if they were that concerned they wouldnt have baulked at a paycut.

Yes I do.

Will come down to the ratings and whether the broadcasters are happy with the return on their investment.

But it was only some players that baulked, didn’t the majority go along with it.

Also it appears the message didn’t come out that well.

There was a question on the questionnaire which said something like:

“Would you prefer a 22 rounds”

The answer is obviously going to come back as yes. This then got taken as the players demand 22 weeks to get paid more.

Ratings will inevitably fall away, its just not the same. Fans will watch their own clubs games but thats about it I reckon.

I know I was at work and I was listening on radio but it was very weird

They would prefer 22 rounds because they knew they'd back themselves into a corner with their last pay deal.

It doesn’t seem like the players care too much given they baulked at both the reduced season and the pay cut.

Very bad look
Particularly when they'd negotiated to have their pay linked to revenue as part of the last EB. Now they don't like the outcome. They should be grateful to be getting paid at all, and that they are healthy, many people around the world don't have 1 or both at the moment

I think thats a different issue, they'd be aware what's happening so realise they need to play and they don't want to do that for just a few gold bars.

I don't think TV can scuttle the deal if the games are still played though. They'd still have to pay up even if the ratings were poor.

I posted a while ago about how the players and media banged on about player welfare during the Essendon saga.

But now that is not an issue?
