He hasn't. Two years ago he disbanded the team in the CDC who respond to events such as this. The second in command position in the CDC is currently vacant and has been almost since he took office. The US is woefully underprepared to counter a pandemic such as this. The reason the WHO declared a pandemic is partially because of the poor US response.

There were US citizens in Wuhan at the outbreak. Trump was told not to bring them back to the US by the CDC until their symptoms had abated. He defied the CDC's advice and flew them back in. The Department staff at Health and Human Services then went to inspect them with NO protective gear - no masks, no gloves etc when their plane landed at the US air base in California. The first case reported in the US was from the local community to that air-base.

Trump has refused to make more testing available. He liked the numbers low. The best way to keep it low was to not do testing. Many workers in the US can't afford the healthcare costs to go and get testing done, and were unsure how much it was going to cost them. Also most of those workers are casual so if you call in sick, you don't get paid, or more likely, end up fired if you have extended time off.

His press conference today he stated that Health Insurers are going to pay the costs. The top lobby firm for the Industry has since come out and said that is total news to them and is not happening. At least three statements he made during the press conference have had to be completely refuted by the White House as being incorrect.

The spread of infection in the US is completely unknown, and if countries were smart, travellers from the US should be on the 'not to enter' list. The first case in Melbourne was from someone travelling back from the US. His decisions are not effective in trying to control the outbreak that is already happening in the US.

can you provide links on the above - as I see democratic governers and congressmen are praising the whitehouse's response and I also read that covid-19 testing will be free of charge and that from the health insurers

Edit: just gotta love the trump bashing on here when you put in the context of what other nations are not doing and getting no critisizm. Where is the bashing of China for the way it handled the outbreak, or how about Europe, South Korea, Iran and the list goes on..I sense some TDS on here

No idea. Vaccines aren't quick though.

No, but otoh a vaccine isn't the only answer. Viruses like this can't survive outside their human host, so locking down, as it were, reduces the spread to new hosts and starts to kill it off. Not simple, not easy, agreed - but if the right things are done and they are effective, by the time a vaccine is available it may be - well, not too late, but certainly after COVID-19 is almost a thing of the past.

(Does anyone know what happened with any vaccines for e.g. SARS and Swine Flu? Are they still a thing?)

Sometimes I think it might be a good idea to close the borders and lock the population in their homes for 3 weeks. Massive killbuzz for the economy, of course, but hey, ripping off bandaids and all that.

legit the government are considering this. I got some emails at work today that suggest that a lockdown of 14ish day may well be on the cards and how our store will be closed but we will still be getting paid if such an event happens, and it won't come out of our sick leave or annual leave.

You're quite right...

I don't think Trump's response has been as poor as some people are saying but it certainly hasn't been up to a standard that Alastair Clarkson would accept.

We may be waiting a while for a vaccine; by the time it comes around Fisher McAsey will probably have developed into our main key defender.

Angela Merkel's comments about 2/3 of the German population being infected were about as hyperbolic as Ken Hinkley's "look out, we're coming" statement.

I think the "experts" predicting that 60% of the Australian population will be infected are about as reliable as your average AFL media journalist.

When we are looking at infection rates and projected demand for hospital beds, we need to remember that it won't be a spike; it will be spread over time like a good list management process.

We may need to consider closing Australia's borders completely, which might have a devastating impact on our Cat B rookie intake from Ireland.

Been saying it for years - the professionalism of the game has outgrown the size of the ground. In golf, they put the brakes on tech to stop a bloke driving a 500 metre par 5 - in footy you cant do that, so you have to reduce the players on the ground. The sooner it happens (and it has to happen) the better.

It's mainly about trying to foster a kind of herd immunity. Slow the spread. At a slower rate people will incrementally develop immunity. Then the next person who touches the door handle might be immune and it stops with them rather than with your grandma.

Personally I dont think R1 will go ahead. While the closed stadium idea had merit, the legal and personal implications of an infected player and or official transmitting the virus to another is very real.

I am a fan of 16 a side for the reasons you suggest - but for Clarkson to suggest the AFL need to ''legislate to make scoring better ' is the biggest load of wank out

again, go watch his speech he has just given - what he is actually doing sounds vastly different from what you have just alluded to. Remember he placed a travel ban before anyone else had done and offered to send across top medical experts in virology to China to help in the early phase and it was declined. He has also sought a huge amount of money from Congress to help across the country both medically and financially.

I am just looking at the facts - not playing politics. Not sure why people here are attacking him when he is taking huge measures to try and stop the spread and find an effective treatment
