Hi guys,

the live Draft thread is now open here.

One of the specific situations I was thinking of is Mikayla Pauga, Brisbane academy but currently based in Gold Coast due to uni and has to play for her Uni side in the QAFLW whilst she's studying, will she just nominate Gold Coast to make it easier I wonder?
Well she hasn't been "domiciled" for a minimum of two (2) years within the Gold Coast zone, so she'll have to nominate for all of Queensland to have any chance of being drafted by the Suns.*^ Not that it answers the vibe of your question.

*unless the rules have changed this year
^unless otherwise approved by the AFLW List Committee

Question?

Can Geelong and Gold Coast sign any top agers that have participated in the NAB League/ U19 Championships? Players such as Maeve Chaplin, Grace McRae, Christine Okesene etc. Are they up for grabs?

I've been operating on the assumption of yes, they can, especially given someone like Tierney has played in the Geelong VFLW side it makes sense

Interesting. If I was a betting man, I think it would look something like this.

Geelong: Renae Tierney
Geelong: Chloe Leonard
Gold Coast: Lucinda Pullar
Gold Coast: Christine Okesene

Just a stab in the dark.

Saints have traded Pick 22 and 25 to the Bulldogs for pick 12.

anyone have insight into whether we’re chasing a particular player with a move like that?

It will be more about the Bulldogs than the Saints. Looking for value back there and wanting to grab a couple of players around the same region (coupled with Pick 27) to grab some underrated players.

Saints have done well to move up and grab another elite talent. Will get Prespakis + potentially a KPP there be it Friend/Slender for example.

Potentially points for Giorgia Campbell as a father daughter?
Or Dojiok as an NGA pick?

AFLW uses the old AFL system for Father-Daughter picks, just use your next pick after the bid, so points not so much the issue as pick postion. NGA bidding not a thing in AFLW

If bid on before 22, the Dogs can just take Campbell with their next selection, no need to match points. That's assuming she picks them though. More underrated talent they believe they can get for value at those selections.

Interesting (to me at least) that this trade is kind of the opposite of two years ago when the Dogs were trying to get in front of a Grant bid, trading from 24 to 9 (which was only a few picks in the Vic order). I feel like the trade is justifiable on their end whether they're getting in behind a Campbell bid or not. They're only moving down four Victorian spots and getting another pick two Vic picks later. I can't help but wonder if they wind up adding Appleby to the Knights pile now.

Also wondering if we might see Gillard to the Saints - particularly if Prespakis is pick 4.

Thanks for the clarification :thumbsu:
I wonder whether the dogs would have looked to do a similar trade if our first pick had remained at 4 in the VIC pool rather than being bumped back to 7?

Bit of talk about St Kilda securing Georgie Prespaskis in this thread; am I being daft in not understanding why Geelong wouldn't grab her with #2?

I thought the league had changed the rules around players being able to nominate Vic Metro or Geelong?

They have, but they're well aware of the risk posed in terms of leaving. There might not be a nomination anymore, but in the same way Geelong Falcons will ultimately list the Cats as their preferred destination if staying in Geelong, the metro players will have their preferences (particularly at the top end). Of course the Cats can still select her, but Charlie Rowbottom has a holiday house in Torquay, so most are expecting her to be the first Victorian read out.

thanks for the reply, very interesting.

hasn't always worked out for the Falcons>Cats connection as we saw with Lucy McEvoy.

hope the Cats recruiting team have been into Georgie big-style with any fringe benefit they can throw her way.

Rowbottom won't want to leave Metro area either School, Uni and Friends are all there. It will be interesting to see what the Cats do with their first pick.

Hmm, the draft really hasn't been kind to us despite our raft of selections, initially with Maddie Prespaskis freezing the club out by nominating Metro in our first swing at the pinata, and then with Lucy McEvoy doing the same a year later despite being a Geelong girl.

Are draftees required to sign a 2-year deal upon being drafted or not?

If i was the Geelong recruiter, i'd be picking Charlie Rowbottom, then go Geelong Falcons Tess Craven, Annie Lee & Poppy Schaap
Rowbottom has the bigger upside than Prespakis, has to move from Bendigo area anyway & the other 3 GF girls are certainties to stay long term & are bloody good players as well

No, draftees only sign 1 year contracts when drafted, 1-2 years after that

Except we've already seen even the local girls don't want to stay (or return) if the team is crap.

I'm not going to say that Geelong's decision to trade away pick 5 for basically nothing, and thereby surrendering Tyanna Smith, definitely led to Purcell wanting out... but it didn't help.

So at this point the Cats should simplify everything and just draft whoever they think the best player is--that's what I'd be saying if there wasn't a risk of losing her as a free agent expansion signing (for which no compo is given) the following year.

It's a tricky one but I am hoping for that approach from Geelong myself ..

It's almost like Geelong are screwed either way. When you can't keep your B&F in your home state, how are you going to hold onto one of two future stars?

However, they have no choice. There is no player at the GWV Rebels or Geelong Falcons that hold a candle to Charlie Rowbottom or Georgia Prespakis.

Personally, I think Charlie Rowbottom is the safer bet. This tall powerhouse simply smashes through congestion at pace. And recruiters do have a habit of choosing the taller talent.

With Essendon's AFLW team coming, you can just see both Prespakis sisters signing with the Bombers. And Maddi Prespakis has even more reason to leave after Carlton's trade period. It would be a nightmare either way if Geelong couldn't keep one of these girls at their club. For that to happen, their culture needs to change, and quickly.
