Anderson just doesn't have any real stand out features to me (I know you've always been a big fan). Will definitely be A grade, but not sure he'll become elite? I think Smith will have the better career and Walsh is probably surpassing all of them (not counting Rowell, who is now a wait and see).

Horne just has so much power in his running, leap and tackling / contested game. His skills and decision making are good (not elite) and he has good goal sense. Imo this translates to a very high ceiling player.

Rowell was the only draftee I rated higher but even then it's close. They are a bit different.
From the footage I've seen of Horne he seems to bomb the ball a bit.....

Doesn't seem to lower his eyes at this stage of his development

Im keen on your thoughts ?

Better than Bailey Smith?

Certainly not IMO, Smith has the most hurt factor of all those let alone Horne.

Brayshaw maybe and I think you're underselling Anderson as well.
We will find out in 2 or 3 years but Walsh has come on leaps and bound and he’s playing in a average team unlike B Smith who is in the top team.

Walsh is far beyond any of those players. Remember he is also playing for the blues
The context was at time of draft. Where would he go.
A few years on and agree Walsh has become a freak.

Walsh
Gap
Gap
Smith
Brayshaw
Gap
Rozee

Rowells 1st 3 games would be the best 3 games by a 1st year player and project him above all of them. Hope he can get back to that.

Thilthorpes game v hawthorn was not half bad for a newbie

If there is one lesson to take out of the last two decades it is that elite talent doesn't improve culture at all. That's just desperate PR from loser clubs, such as Carlton celebrating their 3 pick 1s. If it was so easy, why are Gold Coast still at the bottom, despite having some of the most talented players to walk into an AFL set up in the past decade? Why did Melbourne, Carlton, Saints, and Brisbane fail rebuilds?

Elite talents do not build sh*t on their own, they are merely a response to a team sorting sh*t out, and a bit of luck. Good cultures make elite talents live up to their potential, and become valuable. Bad cultures destroy any semblance of that elite talent.

True, but I would argue that
Alright, im firing up the PlayStation. Say the season ended today with the current standings. Kelly walks out on GWS. Rankine asks for a trade to us.

Would you swap 3 and something (Berg maybe?) for 5 and 11. Take 5 to the draft and give GC 11?

Who says no quicker? Not enough for GWS? Not enough for GC?

And yeah this is all pie in the sky stuff I know.

Crows = hell yes
GWS = nope
GCS = nope

B Smith would also dominate at Carlton now Cripps appears to have fallen off a cliff, only difference is Smith is a way more damaging kick to Walsh.

Smith doesn't really get the minutes he deserves at the Dogs because of their supreme mature depth that are all still firing on all 8 cylinders.

Richmond went pretty hard at Fremantle. And lost. And North is playing just as good footy as Freo.
Our game may end up being in Melbourne still.

I wouldn't expect us to beat Richmond or Swans, not without Cunnington. I think Thomas and Zurhaar should return this week, perhaps Bonar as well but a number of our young kids are pretty banged up. Powell hasn't played since round 14 with his groin injury, probably wont see him back. Phillips and Mahony are also pretty banged up, still on the park but we have a number of players in the low 70% mark for ToG we are managing through to the end of the season.

I hope we still have enough petrol in the tank to be competitive for the last few games but winning is critical for Richmond and Sydney so I would expect another two bruising encounters. The last game against the Crows I think will depend on who is available.

Richmond would have to choke big time to lose to us imo.

Doesn’t lack confidence the lad .

“I would say I’m skilful, smart, composed and have the ability to go forward and impact the scoreboard,” Roberts said. “I look at Marcus Bontempelli to model my game off, I’m not as tall as him but I feel we have similar attributes, such as being a left footer, a good ball user and decision maker and being able to impact up forward.”

Can remember a freshly drafted N Buckley saying he counted his kicks and gets the best out of himself and has had to wear the tag Fig Jam ever since

🤔 I guess times have changed.
Nothing wrong with being confident. I like it

That's the only way anybody loses to us.

I don’t mind a bit of self confidence either , but cant remember Walsh or Rowell talking themselves up too much, they just let the journalists do it after doing their talking on field.

That's the shin boner spirit! 😋
See you in a couple of weeks guys...

Genuine question- but if Horne wasnt a South Aussie, would people on here actually want to finish bottom? I know people are desperate for a good mid, but I think there would actually be considerable damage to our club and its psyche by back to back spoons
If there wasn't blood in the water, do you think sharks would even swim here?

I think GC are a great chance for the spoon. We won’t get pick 2 now as GC are now getting hidings for the rest of the season, if north pick up a win before our game. They get the spoon
GC is the next best place for a south Aussie to be than on our list.

I think I'm hoping for Collingwood to win a couple of games, and GWS to trade 7 and 9 for our pick 2.

Pick 2 becomes pick 4, and looking at Ed Pascoe's current ratings, I think you could throw a blanket over that first dozen. I'd rather two bites. Hell, even Rachele would be a very good get.

I wonder what the go is with Ned Long who looked a real high end tall goal kicking midfield/forward prospect in the early rounds of the NAB League but has been unsighted since? Another we would obviously be having a serious look at. School Footy at Melbourne Grammar or injured?

No specific players in mind here but I’m totally open to us selecting Vic 19 year olds who had their top age year ruined in 2020.

Not everyone is developed enough as a bottom-ager to appear draftable.

That's the Patty Parnell mid season draft pick, a selection we didn't even have to use a national draft pick on.

I'm down with that.

Yes, and no. Yes, we used a MSD pick on him - which isn't an ND pick. However, assuming we re-sign him for next year, then picking him in the MSD will mean one less selection we're able to make at the ND/RD later in the year.

yep..

give me 2 of those lads in the 7-15 range rather than the one player at pick 2..

Goater and Roberts
or
hobbs and Draper
or
erasmus and Chesser

the combos are endless.. and probably way better than just grabbing Finn Callaghan.

geez.. Roberts injury woes have made him slide.. thats a couple of draft ratings lists he’s now fallen away in..

If we can see it no doubt GWS can too though

There’s every chance we finish above Gold Coast if we beat North. Pick 5 then ..

Goid finish for the bottom, more entertaining than Pyke's final year trying desperately to fall into the 8. Suns are interesting, totally humiliated by Melbourne on the weekend who've had trouble at the bottom end of the ladder and soundly beaten by Lions the week before. But Suns had been ok the month prior, close losses to Roos and Dogs and wins against Tigers and GWS. Not world beaters, but a bounce back could see them topple Blues or Dons.

Hawks are similar and only half a game behind. Over the last few games, Fremantle smoked them and Port had a decent win. There loss to us not too good despite closish scoreboard. But they've beaten Sydney, drawn with Melbourne and just beat Brisbane. They've got Pies and Tigers at MCG and Dogs in Tassie in last 3 rounds. Easily win 2 and possibly 3 if hounds phone it in in round 22.

Gut feel is if we beat Roos, Hawks overtake us and it'll be a close call with Suns.
