Prediction 2021 Draft Predictions

For those who aren’t quite in a position to do a full phantom draft, but who would still like to have a go at predicting the draft, please use this thread to post your predictions :)

The current draft order is available in the pinned thread, here:

In accordance with board rules, phantom drafts which do not fulfil the requirements of a full first round using the current draft order (at time of posting), and preferably with a bit of explanation and willingness to explain your decisions, may also be merged into this thread.

  1. North Melbourne
  2. GWS Giants
  3. Gold Coast Suns
  4. Adelaide
  5. Hawthorn
  6. Fremantle
  7. Richmond

The strength of the top 20 this year is the midfielders and how relatively close a lot of them are, if you've got two first rounders like GWS/ Richmond the midfielder you get at Pick 7 isn't going to be that much better than the one later in the first round, taking Andrew who has some skills that not many have at the next level isn't the end of the world when you'll still get a Roberts, Johnson, Butler, etc. 10 picks later

A nice draft for the Lions to have two late first rounders. Perhaps 3 if we trade out our 2022 first round. Lions mid field really needs an injection of class/speed

I feel like North should pick Darcy first, They need a good young forward to help Larkey. I don't think they need more midfielders but if Dogs match the bid then Nick Daicos.

They will both be matched and we should wipe both teams out of the draft. Crazy not to bid - everyone of our other picks improves 2 spots.

If the dogs match on Darcy and they don’t really have the points to match this year would it wipe out the Dogs first round pick next season?
Pushes it back if they go into deficit. Just minus the points carried over from their finishing position 1st round pick in 2022

which essentially means that they don't have a first this year and next year plus they didn't have one last year so they will need to keep there 2023 first round or trade for a first either this year or next year.
They could be in a lot of trouble if they keep matching bids and not using a first round or if they match does it mean they used a first round?
I am unsure how the new rules work with bidding in the first round.

Yeah the Pies need to be really careful - they should still have a 1st rounder next year.

If for example they are 250 points in deficit then if they have pick 5 it gets pushed back to pick 8.

Following Week 2 of the Finals, the current order for the first round of the draft is:
  1. North Melbourne
  2. GWS Giants (from Collingwood)
  3. Gold Coast
  4. Adelaide
  5. Hawthorn
  6. Carlton
  7. Richmond
  8. Fremantle
  9. St Kilda
  10. West Coast
  11. Essendon
  12. Sydney
  13. GWS Giants
  14. Brisbane Lions
  15. Western Bulldogs
  16. Richmond (from Geelong)
  17. Port Adelaide
  18. Brisbane Lions (from Melbourne)
This has been updated if anyone needs a template

GWS to go Amiss at 2 and target the mid at their second pick.
That definitely wont happen.

We may take him with our second pick if he is available. (which is a big if)

Assuming Horne is gone ( I heard a rumour this is not a forgone conclusion, I choose to believe this, even if it is unlikely) , we will take Callaghan or Gibcus.

I hope the Fahey bid doesn't come that early.
If it does , would be interesting if we matched. I suspect if it came at 9 we'd probably pass.

Interested to see the trades broken down. Tigers bid on Fahey and then trade our pick to West Coast?
I'd hate for the Tigers to finally get the dogs 1st pick and then trade it.

My thinking is that Tigers have the best handful of points to offer Bulldogs for their pick.
Not that I think it will happen on the night, but if Tigers already have Roberts & Rachele and Amiss & Van Rooyen are already gone by that pick then they could trade it for decent future picks to one of the clubs desperate to get into the draft.
Here I have them trading pick 20 to Geelong for their pick 32, and maybe our future 2nd for their future first?

I'd be surprised if it did come that early. Bids generally come later than everyone expects.
Just throwing something a bit different out there, not sure how you guys rate Fahey compared to whoever would be available with your pick 13 (15). All those players are apparently quite even.
The Fahey bid not likely to come any earlier than around #20. You don't have the points to match for that at this stage. What do you think the plan would be?

Personally, I don't have Fahey anywhere near the top 10 (or top 15), so I wouldn't be spending that GWS pick on him, especially given we are well stock in his position.

To cover a later pick, I'd expect that we'll lose Riccardi to a Victorian club, and if we can get a pick in the low 40s, there's some more points. Bidding on Daicos and Darcy would move our later picks forward when Pies & Dogs 20s/30s/40s picks get used up matching. I can see us accepting a small deficit into next year's draft (as we've done before) if he's bid a bit earlier, rather than get too swept up in clearing it all. If the bid comes outside the first round, then the reduction is off the second round next year anyway. If it's late in the first, we'll that's just bad luck.

Roberts, Rachele Butler and Bazzo would be a C- with the picks Richmond have.Stay with Amiss/Van Rooyen then next best mid (not Roberts).
