Why is this still called the 2020 List Management II. I would've thought the title should have had an upgrade by now.

Uh huh

Hi all

Firstly apologies if this is not the correct place to post this question. Couldn’t find a better thread / didn’t want to make a new one for a simple query.

Lots of media and discussion around Treloar being traded out of Collingwood to the Dogs, with Collingwood paying ~$300k of his salary.

Does anyone know if we went hard to get him? Or if we were even in a position to make a trade happen? Can’t imagine too many teams not wanting to have Treloar in their side.

I remember at the time of this going down thinking I’d love to have him on our list. Just wasn’t sure at what cost / risk of not getting the Saad and Williams deals done.

Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts and discussions!

Part of it would probably be the rivalry. Stings a lot less for a star player to leave to a neutral club, then to an arch rival.

I don't rightly know if we were interested or not, but I'd suggest that after adding Williams via FA and chasing after Saad, we were probably a little time and salary poor to be throwing ourselves into the mix.

The Doggies were likely interested as they were facing the prospect of losing Dunkley, and when the Dunkley stuff petered out they just pushed on and found a way to get Treloar anyway.

Age, contract term, injuries & cost probably went against our trade enquiries.

We may have funds allocated for others as well from the trade slush fund, which was probably exhausted following on from the trade targets already gained.

Just looking back at the first round of the 2017 draft, it quite sad really.
Look at the list and compare our selections vs other teams.

Did we just draft badly, developed badly or do they need more time?

Dow, LOB and to a lesser extend Fogarty needs to show something significant this season!

Fogarty has come in and had 20 in his first game for us, should have kicked a goal too. Not a bad first outing in navy blue.

He featured in the My Blue Heaven votes too, with all but one of them ranking him 4th or 5th.

We can add SPS/Cunners to that list too. These two are now approaching their 5th and 6th years in the system respectively, and really need to show something.

In regards to Dow and LOB, both only recently turned 21 so there's a bit of time left.

Nah give em time to mature. Maybe we can expect something after 8 or 10 years in the system.

Yeh I’d give Dow and LOB another 2-3 months before I get too worried. It would be nice if they were established by now but imo what they are producing isn’t unreasonable.
SPS is imo the worry. 80 games under his belt and not really projecting like an improving player. Maybe he will just be a B grade footballer.

players like JSOS, Harry and Weitering are only two months older then SPS and Setterfield and playing roles that should take a lot longer to develop in so it’s time for those two to actually drive this teams improvement.

Yep, I'm really worried about sps. Has shown no improvement over the past few years, was a liability most games last year, with a very small handful of games where he was solid. Against the tigers he was the same old, didn't look improved at all. If he continues to play like he has for the rest of the season, we may have to seriously consider putting him up for trade, as painful as that sounds :(

Would you trade Doc with him

Played a good first game did he take a shot from 35 or try and spot a target that was disappointing

We just got it wrong unfortunately. Watching the North game LDU reminded me of a young Cripps moved just like him and is now a big boy. They are already building a midfield around him. Unfortunately this was our strategy with The Dow selection but just got it wrong. I think Dow will be OK but nothing like those immediately above and below him who have already become significant contributors week in week out.

We have had an issue with trying to find the perfect player(s) with the wrong (and with too few) picks. It's a piecemeal approach that creates problems.

Not sure you can say we've had the wrong or too few picks.

Between 2015 and 2019 we drafted 23 players, 11 of those were top 20 picks. I'd be very surprised if any club without priority picks would average better than 2 top 20 picks for 5 years.

Also in that period we traded in 11 former top 20 picks (6 of them were actually top 10). Incidentally 6 of those 11 have been delisted.

Of the 23 drafted we still have 17 on our list and the highest pick delisted was 47.

I'd argue that any problems we still have in list management is not the result of too few or the wrong picks. In my view we have regarded our draft picks as untouchable from a trade perspective and have been too reluctant use them to fill the gaps that have been identified. Other clubs (Brisbane and GWS to name 2) have been prepared to use even low draft picks as collateral to better balance their lists.

Someone predicted earlier that our premiership window will open in 2024 but if this is the case I'd seriously start to question the quality of our rebuild. We are not going to get the draft picks in the coming years that we have enjoyed. It is likely to be much harder for us to improve our list in the near future.

With near future retirements we really need those players we've supported and stuck by to finally come good. In my opinion too few have so far.

Having said all that I reckon we'll be in it up to our ears next year, if not this.

Our list is in good shape, pretty sure Hawthorn didn't lament over blown early draft picks before they won 3 premierships in a row and they did have them. In fact a lot of teams and pretty good teams at that have early picks who don't make it, it's just a part of player recruitment.

Teague is at the same point in list development that Ratten was in 2009 with us and that's also the same point things started to go wrong with Ratten's list. The only hope is that we don't make the same mistakes and that means we need to keep bringing in good players and avoid being hamstrung with our player contracts. Our list just simply needs to keep going forwards and so does our best 22.

At this stage there are a few early draft picks that don't look anything special. SPS looks like a good ordinary player, O'Brien is struggling and Dow looks ok with a few in the reserves building their game. Still early days for them and that's fine. This only becomes an issue if it's not offset by some later picks becoming really good players and I think that will happen.

The other thing here is that the AFL have changed the rules and that seems to have changed the game. Speed, endurance and kicking skills seem to be extremely important now that the game is much more outside. Our player recruitment needs to heavily focus on that but not at the expense where we recruit players with these traits who can't find the ball or aren't hard enough at it.

Our midfield needs a few hard at it players who can play well on the outside. Williams is a great addition for that very reason but another similar player to him would be great. Someone who can kick and can run as well as provide physicality. Lots of hope for Stocker if he develops the endurance side of things.

I think we have real weaknesses on our wings. We keep seeing players there who are just average in terms of speed, endurance and disposal efficiency. We take Walsh off a wing and we lost the one player who is elite at dropping back to help and release the defenders but who is also able to get back up the field and play that traditional attacking wing role. Hopefully we can find someone.

Our backline probably lacks some attacking run and a genuine third tall defender who can run, attack and hit targets. I want to see more run from SPS and Docherty to get back to his best. Saad is a gun and our two talls are very good. Williamson is ok and I hope he improves as his speed and kicking is pretty good.

Our forward line lacks a tall hard leading target. McKay isn't anything special on the lead, he's probably better suited to being a stationary deep option or at CHF. Casboult is the same. Curnow and McGovern would be ideal as deep leading targets but have been unsighted. Forward line is probably ok for smaller forwards and has some coming through.

We have plenty in the seconds and plenty of recruitment options to come so the opportunity is there, we need to make some really good decisions with how we structure our team.
