Hilarious when you put it up against a sportsman like Toby Price who is also receiving one.
I'm a bit iffy on sports stars getting these kinds of awards TBH.

But an umpire who's been umpiring footy for 6-7 years.... Please.

Is this award a joke. Service to umpiring nationally. Does that include bad umpiring.? I dont know the others but they may have received their awards for long service. Eleni has been on the national scene a short time.

Recipient of the OAM
John Corless (service to community football in Queensland);
Eleni Glouftsis (service to umpiring nationally);
Chris Halbert (service to football history preservation in South Australia);
Fred McMahon (service to country football in Victoria);
George Voyage (service to amateur football in Victoria);
Peter Warner (service to community cricket and football in Victoria);
Alan Wickes (service to VFA and community football in Victoria).
Not quite Obama getting the Nobel peace prize as an encouragement award level, but similar sentiment I expect.

Fascinating. So zero games then. What other clubs were beating down the doors to sign him up recently?

I can genuinely imagine other clubs sniffing if Hayes was beginning to look like a kid with a bright future.

After all, rucks are weird and there are way too many AFL quality rucks floating around for the number of available positions. Still, a 4-5 year apprenticeship as a ruck is pretty stock standard for an 18-19 year old entering the system.

There'll be more female umpires in the future. History won't remember that she umpired well or poorly, just that she was a pioneer/trailblazer

She’s a far more worthy recipient than certain others getting promotions.

Also, I don’t think Eleni receiving an Order of Australia will trigger others to hand theirs back...

I'm iffy on anyone who gets it simply for choosing a certain career path and getting paid the going rate for 30 years and getting awarded as if there's an implied sacrifice.

I see there was a rush to hand their OA’s back.
Did anyone else other than Kerry O’Brien signal their virtues?

Some artist nobody has heard of outside of those in the arty farty set.
That could be just about anyone. I don’t even know who that Kanye West person is and he/she is pretty well known apparently. 😬

Transgender GP Clara Tuck Meng Soo handed back her Order of Australia.

Several others also handed their back in protest.
There were 570 recipients of the Order of Australia. To hand it back because of 1 is an insult to the other 568. While there's a handful that in many peoples view dont deserve it (think most public servants), there are many who do and deserve all the plaudits they can get.

Kerry O'Brien, who is also on the list of people who have become millionaires from the public purse that doesn't deserve another award for doing his damn job, should perhaps let others have a bit of the spotlight.

It's a much bigger insult to the other 568 that they have to share the award with a person who has mainly used her platform to spread hate against a subset of our population (and really could go back 40-50 years with this), all because she was good at sports yoinks ago.

A very commendable (and moral) stance from O'Brien and co. to reject it, and to call out Courts OAM for the absolutely disgusting decision that it was.

It smacked of ABC lefty nepotism to give him the spotlight.
I think it was pretty provocative to give Margaret Court the award to. She’s pretty on the nose but must have friends in high places.

Disagree mate. Not that I condone her views, but in singling her out, O'Brien has put the spotlight on her and away from the other worthy recipients who would otherwise be anonymous.

Not to mention what his handing back the award implicitly says about those who still chose to accept the award?

Apparently gave the same award to Rod Laver a few years ago and for some reason thought she should be on an equal footing based on her contribution to tennis. Would go some way to explain her comment of 'about time'.

The complexities of gender equality verses the complexities of every other equality results in a train crash ..

I think most people are smart enough to be able to seperate the reasons for people accepting the award over O'Brien and others choosing not too

Have you met most people? They aren't that bright.
Tbh, I don't even know any of the other award winners. And 2 years, 5 years, 10 years time I probably won't remember or care about any of this brouhaha

Did they really give out 570 Order of Australias just this year?

That seems... way too many
