I love these kinds of random rules.

Personally I think we should introduce 3 zones where 5 players must be in them at all times, but the captain and two vice captains on field are allowed to roam. They have to wear coloured headbands to help the umpire.

Those 3 players can only sub out for certain other players who wear armbands, but only on Sundays or if the player has a brother or uncle that has previously played 50 games for another club.

Violations of these rules are to be officated by the boundary umpires (to help the field umpires of course) but only 2of the 4 can do this and which two can do it is kept secret until they make a call at which point one of the other remaining two is randomly nominated to have the power.

The penalty is a free kick that cannot go forwards.

The reason we kept Jake Kelly suddenly becomes clear.

To be eligible for a medical substitution, the club doctor must decide that an injured player will be unable to play a game in the next 12 days.

Club doctors must provide the AFL with a medical certificate on the first working day after the match as evidence the substituted player sustained the injury.

Any club found to be breaking the medical substitute rule can be sanctioned "for conduct unbecoming, or prejudicial to the interests or reputation of the AFL, or to bring the game of football into disrepute".

That's at least something, although would have been nice if missing the next 12 days was a requirement, not merely an assessment.

The player will also be named from the emergency list 60 minutes before the bounce. So basically the travelling emergency becomes the sub

No word on whether it's only for U21 players yet, doesn't look like it though

I don't mind the new rule (one day before the season starts, never change AFL), the substituted player missing a week is the crucical part - so I'm pleasantly surprised it has been included.

Its a pity its not based on body shape, Mackay would be a lock for a body shape of a kid 21 years and under.

They're wanting it at 21 and under because they're worried about the emergence of "super sub" DMac who's elite line breaking skills will cause problems for the other 17 clubs in the last quarter.

Sounds like the AFL's solution to clubs not exploiting the rule is that club doctors have to make the call.

Which of course, won't be exploited at all. Not at all.
Yeh what can possibly go wrong? Utter incompetence from the AFL yet again. Let's introduce a rule change at the very last minute and not fully think through any consequences.
Brilliant.

If they don't go with the U21 rule he's absolutely perfect for it.
U21 rule is stupid.

Kids being the sub ruins their development. Cant play a State League game and could get thrown in at any time.

Ruins continuity.

They say it's only for injuries that are 12 days.

What happens if a player injuries their knee and it initially looks serious so they bring on the sub, but during the week the MRI shows that there's no damage to the knee?

Does that mean that the player has to sit out a mandatory 12 day period before being able to play again even if they're not injured ?

Here's the official rules for the medical substitute

No mention of the player needing to be under 21.

It does mention that someone who plays as the sub will be able to play in the reserves that same week, even if they are subbed on

How many players will get subbed out with "calf tightness"?

I can see teams like Port and Richmond really gaming the system to bring on fresh legs.

Well they have to be deemed unfit for the next 12 days. So I'm not sure

According to Fox Footy, the player is not automatically ruled out for the next game if the injury is "non-concussive" but it must be "reasonably determined" that they will be unfit to play within 12 days.

So basically get used to seeing a lot of Lazarus-like recoveries this season.

Hamstring awareness is gonna go through the roof, everyone will be saying we think it's a tear and then the scan comes through and they're good to go.

I'm ok with the new rule, but I don't want a young player to be sub, it has to be a player like Mackay, Kelly, Seedsman, Lynch.

I'll be livid if in Round 1 Berry or Pedlar or Worrell or Thilthorpe is the sub

Also this means we're more likely to risk Doedee and M.Crouch who aren't 100% in Round 1 because we know if they break down we can replace them.

Jarryd Lyons to be subbed with PTSD?

if they are subbed off, it should automatically rule them out for the next week, doesn't matter if they make a Dangerfield like recovery

Even funnier, they are introducing it with 2 weeks of AFLW to go!

I guess even though they finished 2020 season in October, it took another 3 months to let clubs know there was a mandatory 12d exclusion, an then another 2 months to come up with this rule.

Maybe before S.Hocking worried about BS like the standing on the mark rule, he could have focused on how many players would suit up for teams each week.
