Had a thought before about the whole quarantine issue. Hotel quarantine isn't working, and medical experts are saying this is due to the lack of ventilation in hallways and they said the best option would be to have a different set up with cabins in a rural area which allows people to step into fresh air as soon as they open their front door. We are also seeing a lack of people picking fruit as international backpackers aren't allowed in the country and people are refusing to work there as the pay is generally pretty poor.

So, why don't we quarantine people on the fruit farms? That way they'd be staying in cabins so hotel quarantine will no longer be needed, and instead of having everyone holed up in their cabin all day, they can spend at least half their day picking fruit and solving that issue. Killing two birds with the one stone.

Winty for Prez pls

I think you'll find that most fruit farm workers now days are staying in backpacker type accomodation an it's probably worse off than the hotel situation

The best location that's been used so far is Howard Springs just outta Darwin - it's a mining camp, so individual full facility cabins which means that there's plenty of circulation inside & outside of the cabins, folks have balconies/front porch they can sit on etc

The best option would be mining camps with their accomodation, or what would have been good is if at some stage over the past 11 months there was temporary accomodation sites built outside the capital cities & that replicate the mining camp facilities

My brother is in Howard springs right now after returning from the UK. Judging from facetime calls it's better than the mining camps I'm used to and apparently the food is really good.

On the other hand I had to quarantine in a mining camp for only a few days late last year and it was heinous. Food quality is 90% of the battle

NT is one place I can think of that's been taking a good number of returned Aussies and yet to have an outbreak or breach from their quarantine - why aren't states learning from that situation, what they are doing and seeing how it can be implemented elsewhere

I'm not sure situation in Tasmania and their numbers, but it would be interesting to see what they're doing versus the mainland

I know it's a line that's often sprouted, "stay in school" - clearly that's not a requirement for the news.com.au social media team:

it's been posted for nearly 4 hours and either no one from the team has noticed, they don't actually realise the error or they just don't care
