In the past it seems we've had multiple threads covering some of these ideas, but thought there could be value in combining them into more of a single discussion point since they do overlap/intertwine

This includes things such as but not limited to
  • Constructive efforts/areas where the team can improve
  • Best 26 going forward (used to be best 25, but since we now have 4 emergencies I don't think it's fair to drop the 4th emergency from the discussion)
  • Team balance
  • Coaching/assistant coaching changes or restructure

Basically, as fans what do we want to see from this team going forward, who do we think will take that next step etc

Question on Selwood.... Love him in all parts of him and his what Geelong are..
BUT... Is there any other position we could play him instead of the midfield?
Could we develop him into a small defender?
The reason I ask this is, I just want to see when it comes to the towards of his career what we can do..

Wishlist:
  • Blicavs to drop back full-time into defence to cover Taylor's retirement
  • Ratugolea to replace Rohan as CHF/relief ruckman. Far too many games where Rohan has zero impact with ball in hand, we might as well get someone who can mark it instead. The club also needs to develop SavRat in game situations.
  • Jordan Clark to start R1 on a back flank. The club needs that dash and delivery. One of Kolo, Bews or Henry makes way.
I also think that we need to be prepared for the question of what happens if Selwood is found to go one year too long. He's not the player he used to be and there's a queue of players lining up for that inside midfield berth.

But thats why as a small defender, I think if any it may worth a chance trying  .
Reason also is we can't keep playing him in there as at his age and younger players may go pass him

We also need someone who can distribute the ball coming out of defence. He would be one guy who could do that.

Agree all points.

Kolo makes way for mine.

Get more games into Simpson, Narkle, Close and Jarvis too.

How much longer does Selwood keep the captaincy before he hands it over to someone? Who out of our youngsters have shown any leadership quality to captain the club in future?? Stewart? Simpson has shown some leadership but maybe he's more very long term.
In the Captains call, I wouldn't mind leaving it up to him. But as Captains I wouldn't mind Dangerfield or Stewart.

Dangerfield, then O'Connor, would be the obvious choices. (O'Connor is the youngest member of the leadership group.)

He will get outmarked, and the speed and mobility of the average small forward will cut him in half.

I agree that he doesn't have another position, but I'm afraid that the answer isn't to try and shuffle round the team to accommodate him.

I'm happy to keep Joel in the postion until he retires but we need to start thinking post Selwood. It's easy to just hand it over to Dangerfield but again he wont be around for much more longer than Joel. Is it a worry that none of our youngsters are showing any leadership qualities? I like Simpson he is showing potential and has proven to lead by example but still very raw. I need to see a lot more.

It’s tough to see where we go from here. Clearly Scott’s game plan isn’t good enough to beat Richmond. It needs everything to be perfect which isn’t possible.

Every year I seem to say the same things though. We need to play our players in their best positions. That means blitz back, 2e back, danger mid, Miers forward. We always play extra defenders, I’d rather play an extra mid.

2 tall forwards are needed and getting Cameron would be the answer but I also think sav will be a good player so hopefully we keep him.

There are also question marks regarding the ruck (like always) Stanley is serviceable but fragile.

We will be competitive again next year but unfortunately I think we’ve just blown our best chance at a flag for quite a while.

One of those youngsters who the people inside of Geelong is Constable, but we dont play him to see this

Isn't Constable off to Freo? That's what I'm hearing.

By all reports Constable will ask for a trade.. As he wants to play seniors footy now..
But do young players these days like Constable and Clark expect to much straight away in playing? As you need to do your time in the 2s like we did with the crew from 07-11... or should we be playing them a few more games

We do a lot right, we just need to add more teeth and variation to our counter attacks, our short kicking through contestation and the short in bound kick into the corridor is solid. We need the option of a quick fat side counter to be able to get from being bottled up on the HFB to a stoppage in the opposite HFF flank, just takes the pressure off our defenders and the threat forces the other sides zone to cover more ground.

Too many of our defenders are only okay at defending and poor at rebounding. We need to do better than Bews and Kolodjashnij( I'd rather player Z.Guthrie at this point.). I want O'Connor to start playing in the oppositions mid sized forwards.

Our half forwards in Miers and Dahlhaus lack foot speed and a penetrating kick. Too many of our I50s are shallow because of it. As a group our forwards a quite ordinary at scoring once the ball hits the deck. Too much is left to our midfield group. Maybe some of Evans, Tahney and Tarca have the skills we need.

Cameron + Sav as the 2nd ruck relieves Rohan from playing as a psudo-tall. I want him playing as a high HFF providing covering the fat side, no more Hawkins Island means we can get a player behind the ball to facilitated the switch, and to provided a disincentive for the other team the just hack the ball forward. Clark in as the HBF given the freedom to run and kick long to link up with Rohan.

Hard to know where to go from here - there'd be those who don't wanna ''throw out the baby with the bathwater'', but I think that it's time to put a line through this current model and start afresh.

- Ablett and presumably Taylor's retirements open up opportunities for some fresh legs.

- Jeremy Cameron will hopefully take some of the burden from Hawkins shoulders.

- Like most of us I've greatly admired Joel Selwood's career, but I wonder whether it might not be time to hand the captaincy reigns on; we need new voices taking ownership of the team.

- Chris Scott will stay for at least another year (and will most likely see out his current contract); he needs to start ensuring that the club does not stagnate into a comfortable retirement home; he has prioritized experience and mature bodies, time to back in some youth for once imo.

- I want to see Parfitt complemented by Fogarty, Simpson and Narkle (if we retain him) in the midfield next year.
There's still a place for Duncan and Guthrie of course, but blokes like Rohan, Dahlhaus and Tuohy should not be keeping kids like Fogarty out of the team. Yes, there will be teething problems and quiet games from a midfield that skews younger; I'm very prepared to endure them.

- The backline needs remodelling; Harry's exit will give us an opportunity to do so.
Jack Henry should be manning one of the KD positions next year; beyond that it should be down to Mark Blicavs vs Lachie Henderson for that 2nd KD role; we don't need both. Ultimately though we will need to give Sam De Koning some opportunities next year; talented kids aren't gonna hang around forever awaiting their chance.

- Patrick Dangerfield is an interesting one; I think we have seen his best (which was great); unfortunately his footy IQ does not match his physical ability. I think expectations surrounding his ability to be our match-winner need to be adjusted.
Park him around half-forward; I really don't like him in the midfield, too sloppy with his disposal. He needs to keep things super-simple. His marking is probably his best strength moving forward, this year I've liked him most when he has been leading up the flanks and wings as a marking target; offers good value in those contests.

More opportunities for Brad Close; give Frank Evans a run ...

Time to freshen the place up.

B: Bews De Koning Kolodjashnij
HB: Stewart Henry O'Connor

C: Menegola Parfitt Duncan

HF: Close Cameron Dangerfield
F: Simpson Hawkins Miers

R: Stanley Guthrie Fogarty

I/C: Selwood (final year) Ratugolea Evans Narkle (if Narkle goes then I'd be giving Cooper opportunities)

Would anyone blame him? With all the talk of getting guys like Higgins and Smith and the ill fated jack Steven project still in play..

Wasn't the latest on Constable that there's been zero interest from other teams

Clark is there one that's on Fremantle's radar - but he's contracted, so unless they are willing to pay overs I'd be saying no & see what he shows next year

We need a game plan solely designed to beat Richmond. Easier said than done especially since our current game plan beats everyone but them but we need a rethink. I’d love for us to adapt a dedicated tagger. I know the days of taggers are pretty much gone but one is needed to stop Martin. He’s a freak that doesn’t miss in finals so we need someone to at least make him earn those shots. Someone to hang off him, niggle, be aggressive with body contact and holding. I’d rather give away a free and make him have a set shot than run free and goal easily.

Wishful thinking but I’d drop an unneeded back and add an extra mid to the team with the goal of tagging the oppositions best mid each week. Think a ling type but with speed.

Hope we don't go after Higgins. Would much rather us put game time into someone like Constable, Fogarty, Simpson, Narkle or Cooper Stephens in the midfield and push Duncan forward to take over Gaz's role on the half forward flank.
