This is the type of player we have to target. Cheap, mature, known quantity, no trade cost. Plus he can play a couple of roles. If we believe we have a few developing rucks and ruck-forwards, then we just need an insurance policy - break glass in case of Oscar related emergency.

I imagine anyone who thought we should be chasing the likes of Briggs or Chol will be disappointed but this is the sort of low cost, no fuss solution that we need. We don't need to offer 4 year contracts to someone, or fork over a high draft pick in a trade.

I wouldn't. I want someone who gives us a better chance of winning games, and based on what I saw this year, that's not Fullarton. We're in our premiership window here and it's imperative that we finish top four again, so that Hipwood can take a few games to get back into the swing of things if he returns around finals time. Casboult just needs to be able to take a contested mark and ruck competently, and he can do both of those things.

And even if one believes Fullarton should play, what's the plan if he gets injured? Fire up Henry Smith even if he isn't ready for the big time?
I would play/trial Payne over both.
I just don't want to add a 32 year old Carlton reject over a kid thrown into a role he was not quite ready for yet
Their should be improvement in Fullarton.
An aging Casboult could go backwards on his 2021 form that was not great anyhow
You are correct in that Casboult will most likely take more contested marks. Casboult 13 to Fullarton 5

Also Levi takes up a list spot we are short on
Would rather that list spot goes to another choice that has more than a year or two at most left in their career

100%, you can not continually look 2-3-4 years down the track, if our medical team deem Casboult fit and capable of a full pre season of training I'd give him a 1 year contract(with a trigger for a 2nd if it gets him over the line) on 120K. One list spot will in no way ruin our medium to long term future.
No way anyone moves interstate especially Victoria for a $120 K + incentives contract
I just think some better options will present itself to take a list spot we are short on

I think he would, he's keen to play on and IMO he will see a decent shot at a premiership with us as being the incentive to move.

I think it is possible to play Fullarton every week and still have Casboult on the list. I doubt Fagan is thinking Casboult is the missing piece of the premiership puzzle.

This is total list management. Unlike fantasy football, not every player on the list has to be a star or a rookie.

According to Herald Sun we are looking at Levi Casboult as a bottom based contract option for next year. To play the second ruck/forward role. Would be payed no more than 120k. He is training in the hope a club picks him up. Article confirms our cap is full.

I'd happily pick him up on the proviso he provides a better contest forward than Fullo right now. Ideally, he'd be displaced by season end but I well and truly see the logic. Could be a very handy value recruit.

What does he earn next year if he is out of the system? $120k is not chump change, and the chance to snag a premiership when your current situation is unemployment would be incentive enough for me

Could casboult play Oscars role in an emergency?

If so it makes perfect sense.
I think you could probably split the ruck time between Fullarton and Casboult. Fullarton should get better and Casboult can compete. It is far from ideal but very few clubs have a great solution to the first string ruck going down.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm enthusiastic about this option. I'd rather Luke Jackson as our second ruck, of course. But it just makes sense. I reckon we really like Henry Smith, see future growth in Fullarton and think Lane has shown something. We might need Casboult for two years or we might only need him for a few months, depending on the young guys' development.

Best case scenario is that Casboult never plays a senior game because Oscar stays fit and the young blokes go straight past Casboult on the depth list. But you don't plan for your best case scenario.

He's been delisted. He has to drag himself to live in Queensland (gasp) and gets paid a reasonable rate. From our list perspective him on the list instead of Arch makes full sense. I don't see this one being a stretch at all for him or us.

Agree there aren't a heap of entry level positions paying 120k plus. He isn't the name player who can walk into a media or development role. He might also be open to the idea of Queensland as his future home, he wouldn't be the first Victorian to make that move.

SUITORS EMERGE FOR LEVI
Levi Casboult is staying in shape as clubs including Brisbane and Gold Coast make early inquiries about his availability.
Brisbane simply doesn’t have money to bring in an established back-up for Oscar McInerney, who was brilliant in the final against the Western Bulldogs, but he needs help.
Casboult battled a knee injury at Carlton and was delisted, but is one of a number of key-position targets the Lions could bring in on a base contract of around $120,000. plus match payments.
Brisbane is one of many clubs who have almost no cap space given the deferral of pay into 2022 from last year’s pay cuts.
So, while they are keen to find another tall after Eric Hipwood’s ACL tear, it will only be a minimum chips-variety player and not a Jack Gunston-type as an instant fix.

NO LATE CHANGE FOR LACHIE
Lachie Neale is already working on his strength and conditioning program for next year at Brisbane and will not make a late trade request to get back home to Perth.
There has been speculation this week that Neale might again ask for a trade home despite considering that move then telling the Lions he was happy to fulfil the last two years of his contract.
His manager Tim Lawrence told the Herald Sun on Friday: “He will not be leaving Brisbane. That is dead and buried. He will not be going anywhere”.
The Lion have three welfare staff - two of them female - given so many players are from interstate and have young partners with children.
Ways in which they will help players’ wives while they are on road trips included things as simple as helping pre-make meals for the week on Sunday afternoons or even staying with them for a full week when they are battling with young kids.
Neale will tweak his program to attempt to bulletproof his program after calf niggles this year, but is locked in at Brisbane for the long run after earlier uncertainty.

Fullarton gets a bad rap on hear by a lot of posters
He is young and stepped into a role he was not quite ready for
Next year more improvement from him. The coaches see something to work with.
I quoted some stats in a previous post. Not much between them considering games experience between the two
Some other stat totals with Levi having played 1 more game than Tom in 2021

Effective disposals Levi 60, Tom 85
Pressure acts...... Levi 105, Tom 154
Turnovers........... Levi 40, Tom 30
Ground ball Gets. Levi 22, Tom 46
Clangers............ Levi 41, Tom 17
Spoils................ Levi 18, Tom 13
Contested marks. Levi 17, Tom 5
Contested Poss... Levi 62, Tom 59

That's a pretty selective use of stats. Levi does present quite favourably against Fullo in some other aspects, particularly some which are important for forwards.

I have nothing against Tom and think he has a great base to work with but presently I think he has some aspects, particularly in forward craft that need improvement. Throw in that he's simply far from ready to be able to hold a number one ruck role should Oscar go down and Casboult makes a lot sense for us imo.

It is true Levi defensive pressure acts are a concern but it is more his ability to compete in the ruck is the reason we would be looking at him.

The Carlton reject tag doesn’t fit, if they were in the hunt he would be there. Doesn’t fit where they are at.

Whatever Carlton does, do the opposite. If they delisted Casboult then by all rights we should recruit him.

I understand Rory Lobb could be interested in leaving Freeo.........would it be a disaster if we did a swap with Neale in last 90 mins of the draft period......plus a little sweetner for us. Feather in the cap for Damo ;)

Would need to be one hell of a sweetener.
