18 teams is way too many for this competition, there is just not enough talent out there to take it to a decent standard, they are diluting an already shallow player pool, should have gone the NRLW model and built it up a lot slower.
Agree 100%.

The AFL is under massive pressure from different groups to expand the comp.

Stakeholders were asked if the number of rounds should be extended or the number of teams.

The overwhelming feedback they got was number of teams.

Rumors still kicking we'll lose Wardlaw too. Dakota can step up im sure but damn, it hurts...

We can't lose Ally Anderson, right?
That’d be the kick in the guts that’d do it for me.

We can pay two players outside the salary cap, basically any amount.

Anderson and Wardlaw would be the two for me. (Just had a look at the Lions AFLW list, I didn’t realise Anderson was 29. I thought she was 24/25)

But St Kilda could offer double what we might be able to afford.

well.... oh well.

I'm actually more sad for losing Bodey. Maybe from last year with the potential of losing Bates i was readying myself.

I feel while we can't replace Bates entirely, Anderson was going great this year and our other mids can really work together to fill the gap, while with Bodey shes such a smart forward. Many of our other forwards don't have her measure under the pressure.

Lets hope we can prove to the other teams that not only are our players the best, so are our pathways to emerging talents too :) I have tust in that.

Time to put fingers in my ears for another few hours/days until we find out the next round of losses we will be inflicted.

Completely agree with you.

I didn't care when it was Gold Coast/GWS in the mens and we lost Bock/Davis.

But to lose players (Admittedly, I didn't care about any loss prior to today) to clubs who had no desire to even be involved is BS. Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Sydney and Gold Coast didn't even want to join at the beginning. And when they looked at expansion, it was only then Gold Coast/Essendon/Hawthorn tried.

These rules being made up on the fly to help out clubs that never cared?

It's like parents spoiling their child, despite them being unemployed and contributing nothing to society.

Emily Bates was my favourite Lions player (both gender teams). Will be hard to get over this loss. My enthusiasm for AFLW has waned given the AFL’s history of gutting us every couple of years!
Honest question - What was winning the 2021 premiership like compared to the 3 peat?

The AFL tried to stack the deck against both you and us. Though, we got through that first period unscathed. You did not. But you rebuilt the team to get back there and win it. Honestly wondering what it'd have been like for you guys. You'd be able to stick the middle finger up at the AFL in the process.

This is gonna show my age a bit, but I was only very young when the Lions were part of the 3 peat so I never appreciate the historical significance of it and never saw my club win another premiership after that period of time (okay excluding the 2013 NAB Cup and 2017 AFLX meme trophy win) so to see my team win a professional premiership (AFL/AFLW) and to also witness it live at Adelaide Oval as well will always go down to be one of my fondest memories of supporting my club and hopefully soon the men can win one as well before our premiership window closes, especially given the amount of shite that they dished up for most if not all of my schooling years :thumbsu:

Losing Emily would hurt for sure, I'm one of the big supporters of her - sad to see her go.

There may be a bright side to it as well, GF showed we were a bit small through the middle and except Cathy Svarc we didn't match up well in size against Demons. Emily moving might help us re-jig that area a bit.

Need to hang on to both CSvarc and Dawes, then add a bigger body to complement them.

Gives more opportunity to others, and surely we would be able to start attracting some bigger name talent to the club. Although, the AFLW is still probably a bit young with players very much still just playing where the live. It's disappointing from a supporters perspective, but at the same time, wish them all the best. Can't blame any of the women for taking a payday and cashing in on their careers. They are the pioneers and overall will get paid peanuts for being the trail blazers.

Club has a bit of a history now in taking in a few players and turning them into good contributors in a good side. For those players looking for a change or wanting to be playing in a strong team, we should try capitalise on that.
