I honestly think that if we had a genuine interest in Phillipou that we would have traded our 2023 first rounder for Rankine.

To me I just don't see us moving heaven and earth to get him, there might be the possibility that if he's still around in the late teens and we might consider trading our two 2023 2nd round picks for him, but even though I don't know if we would.

If the quality of the 2023 draft class is what they're predicting then I just can't see us letting go of a potential top 5 pick next year.

You honestly think we'll be bottom 5 next year? I have us just outside finals.

10th AFC
11th Saints
12th Suns
13th Essendon
15th GWS
16th Hawks
17th WC
18th North

Who honestly knows

Going into 2022 I had Collingwood, Gold Coast and Hawthorn penciled in to finish below us, fortunes can change very quickly from season to season.

Depending on our draw/injuries etc we could really finish anywhere from bottom 4 to 10th

I think this upcoming season there will be a heavy dose of clubs in the hard nose dive category.

Essendon, WC, North, Hawthorn are all in such hot messes, you can't help but assume all will be duking it out for pick 1 by the bye round.

St Kilda will probably take half a season to figure out what the hell Ross Lyon is talking about.

The expansion clubs will win a few games on raw talent, but when push comes to shove they'll both lose more then they win.

And I kinda feel like at least 1 of Richmond, Carlton or the WB will totally c**p the bed.

We're not that good yet, but we may find ourselves Bradbury our way up the ladder without too many upset wins.

How are we getting terrible value for our future first pick?

We'd be getting pick 10 for a future top 10 pick which I actually project to be about pick 10 in 2023.

But regardless of those future unknown players, in the future draft that's always better.... we'd be getting a bottom age tall SA midfielder who looks pretty damn good, and could be exactly what we need. We'd potentially be getting a top 5 player in this draft that has fallen due to interstate clubs not wanting to draft him.

You said pick 15 not 10. i think about 8 but in any case we won't have a later pick than 15 in the first rd next year.
And given that next years draft is considered much stronger, that would be a massive overpay on our part.

You might disagree with the idea of next years draft is stronger than this year, that's actually irrelevant if the clubs themselves disagree.
The same is true for Phillipou, you might think he's worth a top 5 pick, but if he starts sliding, than obviously that's not how the clubs see it.

If someone is willing to sell you something for $60, you don't pay $100 just because you think it's worth more.

If we wanted to get back into this year draft we would be using our 2 second rd picks.

Mutineer was suggesting 10, which is why I was responding to your comments (at him) regarding that pick.

Regardless, if the team at pick 10 or 15 is on the clock, the pick doesn't doesn't matter at that point. The only value that matters is how we rank the player.

If we have Phillipou as the 6th best player in the draft then we're trading at that point in time for the 6th best player regardless of how other teams rank him. Like GWS said, every team has a different draft board due to kids desire to stay in their home state. If we think that our future pick is going to yeild a similar player from interstate then I think it's smart to trade forward and get the SA kid.

Top 5 pick is only your opinion, if we rate Mattaes as a top 5 pick in this draft and he's still there at #10 or later we'd be silly to not make every effort to trade in.

I'm sure the Suns would have loved to get our next year's first so they'd be forced to use it as collateral for their Academy kid Jed Walter.....Not.

For the record I think he goes to Essendon, if not it it will likely be the Saints or Dogs.

thats just wasteful of draft resources

If we actually rated him that highly I suspect the club would have worked the Rankine trade around our 2023 first rounder.

Both the Crows and Port traded away their picks this year which suggests to me that both clubs don't appear rate him anywhere near as highly as people on here believe.

If top end prospects Rankine and JHF weren't available of course both clubs would be all over him like a rash. We still hold the collateral to get him if we can find a buyer a from pick 10 onwards be it however unlikely he does...Port don't have a feather to fly with in that regard. I'm led to believe we also have big interest in another SA youngster Harry Barnett at the right price.

I know your a Jack Delean fan. In your opinion, who do you rate higher . Philipou or Delean.?

For our needs Phillipou easily.

I like Delean a lot but Ashton Moir> Jack Delean.

Even if we love him, we're getting terrible value for our future pick
I guess that depends how we rate players we think will be available to us next yeay and where we think we'll finish.....There's no big SA midfielders of the class of Phillipou evident at this point for next year...Ashton Moir is the clear best SA talent on this year's U18's form but he's more a dynamic medium forward at this point.

You think Gold Coast wouldn’t have preferred our F1 over 5 in this shitty, excremental draft????

😆
I don't know why you bother Colonel I couldn't give 2 shits about what you think.

I guess you had a little victory because I reacted like you had hoped.

Phillipou is long gone at 15 and no one is trading us an earlier pick for less than a deal that includes our F1st. He’s not playing for the AFC. No doubt we’ll get the best small forward with the potential to have bursts in the middle again next year.
Let’s just hope that he doesn’t become that player we so obviously need. Personally, I think he very likely will be and we’ll regret not making it happen.

Also might not be, people were calling for us to take 'big body' mid hately at pick 9 instead of Jones. Hately is worse than Jones - Hamish was right. What Hamish got horribly wrong though was that Butters was way better than Jones.

Point is whether its Hately, Phillipou or Santa... nothing is a sure thing

Point is, if you keep picking small forwards you still don’t have a big body mid.
I’m also not convinced Jones is better than Hately. He just gets to play in a position that sort of suits him. As a midfielder, he is every bit as disappointing as Hately.

You're funny...
Hately is afraid of the ball let alone his man
why don't you think the selectors play him...

To be honest I don’t know. At times he’s looked ok, at times he’s looked shit. But hey, that could be said about a half a dozen players that Nicks and co play week in week out. One thing is for sure, he’s not a small forward.
I’m not pushing for him to get games anyway. I’m for recruiting players that fill the obvious holes in our squad, not adding more in areas we have covered. Phillipou is a highly talented SA big bodied midfielder. Hately has nothing to do with it, we should get him.

Again, we would use our other draft picks to make move

This what I'm mainly interested in - everyone talks about a banging draft year for 2023, but is there a dynamic big bodied midfielder in there that we have our eyes on who we might realistically get (and keep)? If we get a KPD or another 180cm player with our first pick this board will go nuclear 🤯
