While you're here, take a few minutes out of your Draft Day(s) to cast a vote on the 2022 Game Previews poll.

Considering we entered into a weak draft pretty late I can't fault our strategy. Went needs for all bar 1 (Emmett) including a cpl plug 'n play mature guys. Some classic project players from our NGA with athleticism to burn too. Was really a typical draft for a team in win-now mode, unsexy but sound.

Understandable draft. We were never going to belt it out of the park given our hand (which is what it is due to us bringing in the biggest fish during the trade period - there was always going to be a heavy price. In the end we brought in Jackson, Knobel and Wagner for Jefferson, F1 and F2)

Backs:
We needed a KPD for depth, and we got 2 in Davies and Draper. Really liked the Davies pick, Cracking young lad. Wagner certainly capable of spending some time back there as well. I'd like to see our back 6 as:
Draper, Pearce, Chapman
Davies, Cox, Hamling

Too tall?

Mids: Needed a bit of the old run and carry, which we got in Wagner and Williams. I kind of see Erasmus, Johnson and Worner as fresh faces to our best 22 next year. It's really building nicely: Brayshaw, Serong, Brodie, NOD, Raz, Johson, Henry, Williams, Worner and Wager. Plenty of talent there. Bloody exciting. Just quietly loving the idea that BT will butcher the Warner/Wagner call if they ever manage to play together.

Rucks
Picked up a young ruckmen who looks a little like a goal post and another guy who's basically a top-up player. We're all hoping neither will ever be needed but lets be real - this is Freo. Good luck to both of them. Hope next year they play more games for us than Luke Strnadica but less than Scott Jones.

Tall Forwards
With the loss of Lobb and Logue and Matt Taberner still on a 0.5 FTE it was imperative that Freo addressed this major area of concern. **** - I knew we forgot something. (nervous laugh) haha, he he. goalkickers hey? Who needs em..amirite?

And finally, good luck to Doc Emmett Brown who as the lone forward brought in has the arduous task of single-handedly dragging Freo from ranked 12th for offense to top 4...no pressure.

All the best peeps, see you in the training reports for the 'Banners really training the house down' announcements.

Go Freo

That's not the whole picture.

Fyfe, Erasmus and Johnson will all be in or around the 22. As could Worner. They aren't new additions, but they are newly available options.

Of your midfield losses Crowden, Western, Valente and Blakely are at the lower end of depth, with only Blakely getting a rookie lifeline.

Williams may be years away but is a midfielder.
Banfield should return to the midfield group. Possibly Chapman might be turned into a winger too.

Draper has played as key forward, more so than as a key back to date, I just think the club will see him a fairly flexible utility type player.

Bit meh about the draft, thought we targeted needs so I’m happy with that, but thought there were better players available to meet them

But I’ll back Wallsy, he’s delivered over a number of years

No pressure on Tabs to stay fit and a key forward who’s played 3 games [emoji2957]

Having a few good key forwards has been our problem for the last 25 years will continue for 2023 unfortunately. That is unless a guy who is injured half the time, a guy with 3 afl games to his name, a guy who was let go by a cellar dweller, or a guy who averages 0.74 goals a game, can somehow produce a miraculous season.

Or we do a 2017-20 Richmond and everyone kicks goals ?

Potentially though our stocks are looking ok, good even. Hearing that Tabs has slimmed down, that may help with his injuries, if so he's a very good KPF. Amiss will be a star and has enough footy IQ for both him and Tabs put together. Treacy is developing well and we could be looking at his breakout year this year. Jackson could be anything.

As for the mids, Ronnie is mid size but plays taller, Doc looks the same but with added pain, Banfield is great depth and Freddie is a ****ing superstar.

Smalls are a tough, hardworking pressure unit. Plus Switta is elite and all that.

As always, a lot of 'if' is in play, but I'm confident we're building an athletic, strong marking, hard hitting forward line that will get goals across the board. No one's winning the Coleman, but I reckon we'll be a lot better than previous years.

Sorry if its been asked somewhere else but I saw a bit on the West australian about Caleb Serong's brother Liam possibly coming to the club? I couldnt read anymore details as it is behind a paywall.

I really find it bizarre the amount of people who don't see medium forward as a need. Emmett was our most needy based selection for mine. All the other positions are at least covered by multiple players entrenched in the best 22 and we were only bolstering the depth charts.

For medium forward, all we have are Banfield (really a midfielder) and Sturt who are closer to being delisted than being considered best 22 material. Corbett is a small KPF, not the agile/speedy medium forward type that has proven to be important for many of the best sides. I would have been happy taking 2 x medium forwards (instead of 2 rucks) to increase the chance of someone making it.

It's a bit of an odd one because we have a few medium forwards (including a first round pick used on one) but like you said, doesnt mean we have any good ones...

Not that a draft pick beyond 30 would change any of that for the next couple of seasons if at all.

Reidy can do more than just stand there mind you, and Corbett and Jackson can offer more in the forward line than they have previously.

Absolutely spot on. Hit the nail on the head.

I've got a funny feeling about Tom Emmett. We don't target these mature aged state league players in the national draft for no reason. Getting very much Sam Switkowski vibes from the pick

Just my thoughts but Freo targeted Hugh Davies and Max Knobel. I reckon they were hopeful of a draft slider in their list but all were gone and pulled the trigger on Hugh. I felt he was rated around the same as Jed Adam’s who I liked. He ended up going at 38.

You never know if we didn’t pull the trigger and waited till 41 he may not have been available.

If we missed a slider at 33, I like our approach to trial a few talented, raw, injured etc young players. Sam Gilbey for example is one that comes to mind rated around 30-40 pre-draft but I can understand why he missed out.
