Do you think there are teams have given up on developing rucks altogether? It seems like everyone's strategy is to either trade one in or raid the state leagues for one. I assume there's a bunch of list managers hanging around Casey with a reminder on their phone to raid Melbourne's ruck stocks in a few years time. Do Russell and Scoullar have any chance of getting picked?
I think Russell has a bit more chance than Scoullar because while not athletic, is still more so than Scoullar. I think Scoullar will need at least another year, but she’s strong and good at the stoppages, just doesn’t offer much around the ground. Russell offers a little more around the ground, but like Scoullar can only really play the one position. There is a lack of rucks this year in Victoria, so not sure it’s the year you want a developing ruck. Next year there’s a few more, Jess Vukic and Bianca Lyne as a couple of examples.

Are Lyne and Vukic rucks at the next level, though? Like, I expect Mia Austin to get picked up (are the expansion teams still getting zone signings?), but I don't expect her to be a ruck at the next level. Vukic is another one who strikes me as more likely to be a key forward who rotates into the ruck. Is that a fair assessment?

With Russell and Scoullar, unless teams think they might need them to play games this year, I think they'll just let them go to the VFLW and pick them up when they need them - potentially replacing an inactive player. I just don't think teams like using list spots for development.

Regardless of height, athleticism, etc., is it worth drafting 18-year-old rucks anymore when the whole season crosses over with year 12? Generally, those young developing rucks don't play in their first year anyway, but on a list of 30 and if the rules are still the same that high schoolers can only train once a week - what is the value in taking them?!? I suppose my one counterargument to myself is that it ensures the talented ruck is on your list and not a rivals, even if it means biting the bullet of getting limited development from them in year 1 and a list spot (plus $39k) wasted.

Feeling very pleased now with Morphett coming across and not having my club in this situation.

Vukic could be definitely, though she's 179cm, her athleticism is brilliant and she matches it with far taller players. Plus she's an artist when it comes to ruck taps, so clean and clever the way she guides the ball down, really high-level smarts, and I personally think she's a better ruck than forward (but could do both).

Lyne is a lot less likely, 176cm is a bit too undersize, and would be a pinch-hitter at best, but we'll find more about her next season to see where clubs want her to play.

Though if you really want to see a short ruck, look at Jemma Ellis - 172cm - but she actually won hitouts up against the 185cm+ Matilda Scholz haha. Vertical leap is ridiculous. Obviously will end up a KPP but yeah, madness.

There's potential talk about a draft post-season for those players who are left out from this one. Not sure how it will work exactly, but almost like a pre-season draft but post-season. Just to get players in early for the club. Nothing confirmed, but it's a possibility.

I'm wrapped with Olivia Barber (Even though our forward stocks were decent, now they're through the roof), but we have lost Pick 25. Now we have pick 30 in the first round. Pie 4 life I want you to take the role of Collingwood's list manager metaphorically speaking. Who are your targets around pick 30?

I'd personally want to get an inside midfielder who can play in other positions (so when Bonnici and Davey return they have a spot), as well as another tall, but an athletic one. Reason being, if Al Downie goes down, Frederick would just go straight to the ruck and you've got another tall ready to go, rather than have an 18YO having to be the key backup.

Charlotte Taylor would be my number one target who fits the bill playing as that inside midfielder who can also play both defence and attack. Keeley Skepper a bit smaller, but again is capable of doing that both playing Pies VFLW side too. She wouldn't necessarily be there, but Octavia Di Donato strikes me as someone who could slide, and she's got that great versatility, and is a far better kick than both of the above, less inside time though and more outside, but back and forward. Mia Busch too is a good shout.

A player I quite like who I think could last a bit longer (aka later picks than 30) but worth a chance is Olivia Robinson, whilst both Jamie-Lee Speakman (back/fwd) and Cassidy Mailer (mid/def/fwd) are just natural footballers with great skills.

From a tall perspective, obviously if available Mia Austin is one who is a good shout from a development perspective. I actually had a random dream last night where West Coast ping Biggie prelisted Julia Teakle out of East Freo and traded her to the Pies. I don't think in the women's they can do that like they did with the men's way back when they expanded, but I'd quite like someone like a Teakle. Great upside, good hands, reliable kick for goal, and hardly been in any elite program. Feel she's someone who could really excel with more time put into the craft.

Heading to SA, I think it could be worth asking the question around Alana Lishmund, a Norwood prospect who won the SANFLW goalkicking. She seems to have found her spot up forward and while I'm expecting Port to prelist her, she has nice speed, great hands and is a booming kick for a smaller player. Central's Isabelle Starmer also a better ruck option than the Vic ones, so if she's not scooped up by an SA club I think it's worth having a chat.

😂

On Teakle, she is or has trained with WCE

I think she’s a shot at the big time 100%

Yeah I rate her a lot. She’s shown plenty as a forward and considering she’s played bush footy most her life and this is her first year in the big smoke, imagine a couple of seasons in an elite program.

I'd love to see Keeley Skepper slide down that far if it's possible. She is small for a midfielder like you said, and Collingwood has enough small mids with Bonnici and Lambert. Charley Ryan would have been perfect, but the ACL puts a dint in that option considering we need midfielders now. I think I've seen Charlotte Taylor play in every position now, but she looks most comfortable in defence (Not that we couldn't use some extra defenders with height). Does she have the tank to be a midfielder would be my only question?

Mia Busch and Octavia Di Donato would be solid options. But I have a feeling Essendon and Hawthorn will take them off the board before the draft same with Mia Austin.

Isabelle Starmer must have a monstrous leap. Only 176cm, 295 hit-outs, and the ruck for SANFLW Team of the Year. Impressive.

I'm pretty confident that they'll move the draft age cutoff at some point to so we don't get 17-year old high schoolers getting drafted. I'm not sure exactly how and when they'll do it, but I don't think this is the ideal situation for the league.

Even still, I don't think developing rucks are going to be popular if they change the draft age. I think you're right that the list size of 30 factors in, but teams are also worried about putting time and money into developing a player who winds up on a rival list. Not a ruck, but Barber's probably an example of that. Pick 21, two years on Geelong's list, then traded to Collingwood for a later pick than she was selected with.

GWS probably knew there was a strong chance Morphett would leave, but the shallower NSW pool probably dictated that they had to take a chance on her talent. Not sure what would have happened with her if she nominated Victoria. I think the Victorian rucks, unless they can play another position (or they're spectacular), have to be prepared for the possibility of going late or undrafted. I understand the clubs' perspective, but it sucks for the players.

Most of the the 180 or smaller rucks are from the before times, though. Teams seem to want rucks to be at least 185 and we've got quite a few around the 190 range. Vetical helps with the centre bounce, but most of the ruck contests are around the ground. I'd say Vukic's best chance at getting drafted is as a key forward who can take the F50 ruck contests and play as an R2. Or, alternatively, as a key defender if teams think she can read the play, intercept mark and play one on one. In either of those spots her size goes from an issue to an asset as well.

Pick 1 Sydney: Cynthia Hamilton
Pick 5 Sydney: Zara Hamilton
Pick 11 Sydney:?
Pick 12 Sydney:?
Pick 13 Sydney:?

In any other state other than Victoria, it is easy to predict the top talent. Except NSW. Do any Sydney supporters want to fill in the blanks.

Dakota Mason would be another name before you throw a blanket over the remaining two spots we have available and I would think we would look towards our academy more than anything else. I would hope we would be trying to talk some non-NSW players into nominating as NSW only to get the most out of these picks.

You will be able to sign Dakota Mason before the draft. The AFL will let you sign at least two, or possibly three NGA's. Ruby Sargent-Wilson was the first to be signed according to the draft wiki. Hence the question marks of who fills those three spots.

um you do realize that Swans have already filled 25 spots, 5 spots left to the 30 list spots available ?

whether they sign any NGA's or draft all 5 is irrelevant

my guess is they'll draft 5 as they've got the top 5 national picks way before GWS

Yes we are aware of that. There are still three spots to fill. Dakota Mason may knock off one spot, which leaves two spots that normally would be top end material but because it's Sydney, they won't get much. Unless a somebody out of state nominates NSW.

Did you mange to hack into my computer and steal my Phantom Draft??????? It's not exact, but it's bloody close. I just have Paige Scott going to Carlton. And of course the empty Sydney slots.

I would potentially hold the horses the Central Districts Player profile has What is your field of work and/or study? I’m in the final year of my medical degree. She has seemed to come into her own at Centrals this SANFLW season and Leah Cutting being at St Kilda for half of SANFLW.

Or she could be a perfect Crows draft and stash on Inactive List if Medical Residency stops her playing.

It would be a bit sad if the GWS Academy prospects from Canberra were to be picked up by Sydney. GWS needs to bring in talent and GWS have been doing good work in Canberra for both Boys and Girls Academies.

ha ha looks like i did, because i had Paige Scott going to Western Bulldogs at pick 20, given that's what GWS will hand over for Huntington

Taylor is a all rounder, with McWilliams going their way, i had them looking at her, probably a toss of the coin between the 2 as the Blues lost Mid & fwd players & Bulldogs lost a heap of fwd's
