Midfield Vote Complete
  • Midfield unit set
Our first group of players in our 2022 Consensus 22 has been decided, with a predictable quartet - Cripps (97.6%), Cerra (99.4%), Hewett (97%) and Walsh (99.4%) almost unanimous.

The final on-field spot and first bench rotation for our midfield group went to improving youngster Paddy Dow (52.4%) and 2021 redemption story Matty Kennedy (38%).

Whilst Kennedy had a fair few more votes than the next rung of players (the likes of Ed Curnow and Zac Williams), fans were split outside our first four.

The makeup of our on-ball brigade has been contentious given the perceived lack of leg speed, despite the overall quality being a few levels higher than years gone by.

All eyes now turn to our defenders as the back six + 1 go under the hammer.

    Defenders vote complete
  • It all starts with the D (efence)

Our backline is decided for 2022. Should-have-been-dual-AA Star CHB Jacob Weitering becomes out first '100-player' with every Bagger rightly selecting the Weiterbot as the first lock of our back six in 2022. He is our rock and undoubtedly 2nd-best player (not by much either) behind the GOAT Sam Walsh.

After missing out on midfield selection, most agreed that 2021 import Zac Williams (89.7%) is a must off the half-backline, with his speed and run essential to our transition from the back half of the ground. Likewise, speedster Adam Saad (97.1%) who is a pure back six player and after a solid debut in Navy Blue, recorded the second highest percentage of defender votes.

Fan-favourite Liam Stocker is fast becoming a star and will spend more time down back again in 2022 before a (hopeful) move up the ground. His 76.5% was the fourth-highest of defenders. Due to Jones' untimely departure, ex-Bulldog Lewis Young becomes an important piece of our makeup - so say 73.5% who have him partnering Weiters down the spine.

At number 6, popular whipping boy and oft badly-timed-giggler Lachie Plowman (66.9%) is - as most sensible fans agree - a crucial (if imperfect) element in our defense. He takes the tough jobs again and again and (mostly) breaking even in a team-first role.

Finally, the Sam Docherty (41.9%) conundrum befuddled and split voters this year, with his return date a complete unknown at this stage. With wistful optimism, our co-captain will line up Round 1 and provide heart and 100% effort in every game he plays. It would be wrong to exclude him from this side without a definite decision on his Round 1 availability at this stage.

In what was a very tight race, Doc beat out popular youngster Brodie Kemp (39%) and first-team regular Nic Newman (36.8%) for the final spot. It's likely both of these will see plenty of football in 2022. Indeed, if as many expect Docherty isn't ready for Round 1 - it will be one of these two that will slot in nicely to anchor the defence.

    Ruck vote complete
  • This one is dusted, folks. TDK is a unanimous choice as our starting ruck for 2022 - taking over 75% of the vote ahead of Pitto.

Looking forward to seeing what a (hopefully) bigger and more mature King can do with a better side around him and better drilled midfield.

Forwards are up next, with poll to be unleashed tomorrow.

    Forwards vote complete
  • Forward thinking

In what was the closest vote to date, our seven forwards for the 22 in 22' have been decided.

Starting off, our 2021 Coleman Medallist Harry McKay was unanimous, polling at 100% as he should be. Unsurprisingly, fellow 2015 alums in Charlie Curnow (99.3%) and Jack Silvagni (93.9%) weren't far behind.

The talented Jack Martin (95.9%) remains a favourite despite not hitting his straps in Navy Blue.

Josh Honey (76.9%) and Zac Fisher (54.4%) announced themselves as our two favoured small forwards for the Consensus team, polling well and surprising a few.

That leaves the final spot, with a number of young smalls fighting it out for the 'forward bench spot'.

Despite a very hard-fought race from untried draftee Jesse Motlop (53 votes overall), serial tease and talented midfielder David Cuningham (36.7% and 54 votes) stole the final spot in our 21 positional votes.

Now having a strong blend of talls & smalls and speed and dynamics, the final position will be one that dramatically divides.

Do we need a defined second ruck? A solid supporting midfielder? Another back or forward?

    Vote to come shortly...

    Final spot in 22
  • The next phase

In what is a symbolic sign of the times, for the first time, 'The Face' himself, Mr Edward Curnow has missed out on our Best 22. Talented 2nd year player Brodie Kemp has won the final spot with the majority of posters opting for his taller flexibility and smooth skills ahead of our mature running beast in the 22.

While Ed is very likely to be in our best side next year, this vote signals a changing of the guard - with guys like Dow, Kennedy and newcomers Cerra and Hewett winning a midfield spot ahead of Curnow senior.

With our interchange vote to come - that's a wrap on our Best 22 in 22'.

Now to see how many we got wrong! My guess - it'll differ by around 6 come Round 1.

    Final side locked and loaded
  • That's it, folks! Our final interchange has landed, with Ed Curnow, Mitch McGovern, Nic Newman and Marc Pittonet securing the final four spots in our votes.

Each have a genuine claim to the 22 and will feature heavily in 2022.

The Best 22 side has divided and created discussion, but is solid and balanced - with a strong chance of taking the Tigers to the sword in Round 1.

Thanks to all for voting and posting this year. May next year be even harder.
