1. Kemp for versatility.
2.
3.

There is next to zero chance that Ed won't be in the team Round 1. He has finished top 5 in the BandF three years in a row!

While these things are quite an enjoyable read and really appreciate the effort made by Matty411 but they are basically meaningless. As others have pointed out there is a good chance that a minimum of 6-8 of the team won't be in the team Round 1.
Same every year, bud. This is but one possible he based on hypothetical sets of criteria and circumstances. It's always 4, 5 or 6 off the R1 team. Most Best 22s are in fact.

If we all wanted to just say our best 22, put your team in that thread and discuss there.

This is merely an exercise to create discussion... which it often succeeds in doing 😉

If it was a final, i would want to be riding in with Ed by my side!
Realistically I agree. Ed will he there R1 and Is like to pick him. But on this exercise and balance of those chosen, Kemp fits the 22 and I have him in my hopefully best 22 for 2022 as well... not to mention Newy and Owies.

I can vouch for that last line 😂.

I think it is a watershed moment that Ed fails to make the 22.

Does he deserve our support like a Simpson? Absolutely. Will he make the round one best 22, probably but I’m hoping he doesn’t. But I still love his effort like Simpson and Kruezer. A warrior with limitations Who played above and beyond.

He has two chances, midfield and defensive forward. He has two traits I can see. Running and trying unbelievably hard at the contest.

His weaknesses are not the best decision maker under time pressure, and a terrible kick inside 50 (On average). Cripps and Ed’s inside 50 kicking are 1/3 of our problem linked to defensive transition.

It seems he has been moved on from the midfield which means defensive fwd is his most likely 22 chance. He has the running. He has the competitiveness. On the negative side, teams will let him continue to be free man for the inside 50 kick. Don’t want that so I still prefer all of the other small fwd options on our list Who are better kicks and have stronger AFL IQs.

Everything involved with forward 50 play and inside 50 play is about poise, decision making and elite kicking to advantage. Ed doesn’t have 1 of these attributes.

It's probably one of the easiest things to do in footy, to be the 3rd or so most senior mid, with no hurt factor, in a poor team and run 4th or 5th in a B&F.

Basically you can run around as you like collecting as much footy as you can with no-one really that keen to stop you. On your own team and the oppo.

I really admire Ed, and he's been a stalwart of a poor side with sheer effort and commitment. But if we're to be a finals team then we need to get better. He's like Carazzo was, and many other tenure mids of poor teams over the years from all teams. Admirable, but a reason why you are a poor team.

We've just added 2 straight into the midfield.
Ed can be value to the team as a tagger, but that's it. Do we pick a 32 year old in our best team just to have a tagger?

Agree and so about the above defensive fwd. But if personally rather Fog in that role.

So you think we'll play Pitto and TDK?

Personally i'd rather not, but I guess we'll have to.

I would rather not either, but I can see Voss running with Pitto as the ruckman, while TDK rests forward, especially if he embraced the idea of Marshall or Ladhams resting forward while Lycett rucked.

I actually hope we run with TDK as the main ruck option and use MacDonald/Young as the 2nd KPF/Ruckman, gives us a point of different with Charlie as the 3rd tall, Gov (what he was at Adelaide)/JSos as the 4th tall and or other options for the other 2 or 3 non KPFs

Despite what the supporters would like, players are getting taller/more mobile, not sure why we would try and emulate a different formula/strategy

Yep, this.

I'd much prefer to see McDonald as the second KPD than Young. He's played there most of his career. That frees up Young to be the Fwd/Ruck option, which he has played recently with the Dogs. The other way around could work, as could Pitto as first ruck, and TDK as Fwd/Ruck (but not the other way around). JSOS/Gov and other possible 2nd ruck options are a distant 4th option. Using JSOS regularly in the ruck will ruin him, and taller sides will take advantage of our lack of height.

We are very exposed in KPP/Ruck options. Full list of 196+ players: Weitering, Young, McDonald, McKay, TDK, Pitto, Mirkov (7). Reckon we need to be playing 5 of these. Can get away with 4, but it's risky. Sure, there are others that can play tall, but it's not ideal. With Mirkov a project player, 2 injuries to the rest of that group leaves us with problems.

If they are worth their salt, Voss, Hanson @ co. will only have structures pencilled in at this stage. We have upwards of 35 players with a realistic shot of being in the ‘22 come round 1. For some of them to play we will need to modify likely structures. It is to be hoped if we have extra talls, extra mids or extra forwards smashing the door down we seriously try to shoehorn them in, as long as we don’t compromise certain non-negotiable. Didn’t include the defence in that list as that needs more structural convention. Might see some licence used with a defender spending time on a wing in a hybrid role.

With natural progression and better structures we are going to have multiple players ‘elevate’ dramatically. There are going to be plenty demand a spot, unfortunately not all will have their demands met.

Yip.

Final spot in 22
The next phase

In what is a symbolic sign of the times, for the first time, 'The Face' himself, Mr Edward Curnow has missed out on our Best 22. Talented 2nd year player Brodie Kemp has won the final spot with the majority of posters opting for his taller flexibility and smooth skills ahead of our mature running beast in the 22.

While Ed is very likely to be in our best side next year, this vote signals a changing of the guard - with guys like Dow, Kennedy and newcomers Cerra and Hewett winning a midfield spot ahead of Curnow senior.

With our interchange vote to come - that's a wrap on our Best 22 in 22'.

Now to see how many we got wrong! My guess - it'll differ by around 6 come Round 1.
