Makes sense given their play for North's pick 3 during the trade period.
Pick three, yes. That would be either sneezel or wardlaw. Pick 4 though drops off a lot I reckon. We won’t do it for pick four

Gc have academy kids next year that will be top end they wouldnt have wanted a future 1st getting swallowed (yes i know they could have traded it for 2024 picks but still).
Or they could have traded it for a player, or they could have traded it for a huge amount of 2023 points.

You take the best asset offered - if the Crows had offered the F2, the GCS would have taken it.

Phillipou - some clubs (not all) have question marks over personality
Baffles me that this is a concern with some clubs, just because the bloke has tickets on himself doesn't make him any less credible as a draftee. We applaud those who do in the NFL, NBA and in combat sports for example.

I really think he ends up the best of his draft class based on what I've seen and just the size of the kid. He is almost ineligible for this draft due to his age, he may grow a few centimeters yet (McKay grew plenty, as did Cripps for us) and is already a genuine bull with an AFL ready frame.

I sincerely hope he slides to our pick and we have the balls to select the best available player at that pick, not the best available player that suits our list strategy.

Pick 8 or 9 next year gets you a better player than pick 5 this year.
You’re guessing on how players develop over the next 12 months though. Obviously the top couple look really good right now, but the rest there’s no guarantee on what heights they’ll reach over the next 12 months. In February lemmey was a pick 1 contender apparently.

TBH I think there are question marks on this years' crop more than most years.

Ashcroft - outstanding (like most years)
Wardlaw - hammies
Tsatas - loopy kicking
Phillipou - some clubs (not all) have question marks over personality
Clark - I actually think he's a safe bet, but what's his ceiling?
Hollands - Safe bet as well
Ginbey - men against boys, might end up a big bodied HB instead of a mid
Well said, I know they weren't in the other posters list but you could add to the question marks;

Hewett - hasn't really kicked on this year.
Humphrey - kicking can be iffy and plays a lot forward, does he have a tank?
MacKenzie - looks a safe bet

I honestly think too much weighting is given to interviews (Brodie Grundy anyone?) but it's a real thing - some clubs have slid him back, for other clubs it's less of a concern

I wouldn’t be surprised if Suns take Humphrey instead good replacement for Rankine
Humphrey is more an aerial threat than ground ball goal kicker.

Not quite like for like

Yeah I have no doubt it’s a real thing, it just baffles me. I agree that far too much stock is put into interviews. They’re just kids after all, I know at 17/18 I’d have been insufferable (and now at 28 I’m not sure I’d be much better!!)

To a degree sure, but you can't have poor personalities around they wreck team dynamics.

No different to the corporate world. You come across a few cocky individuals and that's not always a bad thing, but there is a difference between cocky and arrogant. JHF is an arrogant player who North are happy to get rid of so he's no longer sooking up the place. Port feel they can manage him.

Plenty of clubs will back themselves in to get the best out of him

Not everybody applauds it in the NBA and NFL. However if you break it down, those sports have such specialist positions that often one individual can be the difference. I don't have an issue with anybody being cocky or over confident in solo sporting pursuits, because you only have yourself to blame or revere in any success or failure.

It's RARE that an individual can have that much influence on a teams fortunes in Australian rules football. It's the definition of team sport and played entirely in a country that historically prefers modesty over arrogance.

Now, regardless of all of this, I believe somebody like Phillipou can still thrive at the elite end of Aussie Rules despite being a little different to the norm with his outward confidence.

If we draft him I actually think Sam Mitchell might be the best coach currently to steer him through his career. Sam was the ultimate team man but also very confident and aware of his abilities.

Sounds like Phillipou lives in a bubble where there is nothing but praise and adulation from family and friends.

Eventually someone with runs on the board is going to give him a serve and burst his bubble. Be interesting to see how he responds to criticism and discovering he's not special

He's spoken about respecting senior players, understands he doesn't know everthing and is excited to learn everything he can. I think he knows how much hard work is involved to be elite.

If one 18 year old is going to have that much impact on team dynamics, that might say more about the team.
Sicily slid to the 50s because clubs were worried about his competitiveness. Sicily!

Eyeballs > interviews IMO

Trust the recruiters every so often they make a blue but in general they get this spot on. Team dynamics is so important

Didn't the Lions completely change the way they drafted after every player left them a few years back?

They targetted a lot more vic country boys and avoided players that were a flight risk...
That's a little overblown, we still drafted Rayner and Wilmot from Melbourne and Robertson and Starcevich from Perth.

Perhaps the lesson is, when the team is struggling, target country players, and when they've built a strong culture, then you can take almost anyone. Premiership contention has a magical way of getting players to stick around.

I can see why West Coast, GWS and Gold Coast wouldn't want someone like Tsatas who is a perceived flight risk, as none of them have strong cultures just at the moment. They are better off taking country kids or home state talent.

Add Freo F1 into the pot and it could be done
13, 37, Freo F1, Freo F2 for 6 getting closer to a deal you’d have to consider?

Not sure they’ll put 3 firsts on the table but rumours the Dees will put the Jackson trade package and maybe some more if needed to go up. That Freo first could be more valuable than 6 on its own this time next year

Phillipou will be fine. Sure he’s not going down the path of self- depreciation that we expect from the tadpoles but I don’t see it as arrogance - just confidence in his ability to fit and perform at a high level.

Any interview I have seen he has been respectful of the interviewer, the question and how far he needs to go. He’s just seems confident that he’s done the work and will do the work.
