I reckon in comparison to other years, it's been pretty light this year.
And a lot of the carnage has only occurred in the last couple of weeks.

Looking at top averages:
  • English missed 5 games
  • Jack Steele LTI
  • Baz Smith suspension
  • Grundy LTI
  • Aaron Hall LTI (wouldn't have had high ownership)
  • Preuss being Preuss (but he was rookie priced)
  • NicNat LTI (wouldn't have had high ownership)

What else?
Same, I feel it hasn't been to bad generally. Not that many melts on here.

I copped Darcy, which fecked my structure half way through round 1.
Then McGovern, Hayes, Danger, Xerri, Dixon, Grundy, NOD, Zorko, Teakle and Preuss.
Honourable mentions for players I kept with minor injuries at inconvenient times go to PMac, Owens, Hewett, Hinge, Thompson, Cripps and Darcy

Good thing we all held onto those extra trades, right guys?

Guys?

This. People whinging is fair, but you were all given 5 extra trades for this very reason. Not to burn and complete your teams as fast as possible.

I have a mate with 4 trades left and 2 injuries this week. He's flucked.

I purposely traded in bench cover. I might not have a few of the top premos but got most of them. Pretty happy to have the ability to run 1 of Gresham/Butters at M9 and 1 of Jezza/HH at F7. I've had to settle with Jackson for a few weeks at R2 to do it but hoping he steps up.

100% agree. I had this thought in the PS but got sucked into trying to upgrade too quickly. Those extra trades disappear quickly when going 2 down 1 up each week. And its diminishing returns as you are trading in any rookie rather than the best ones, so the they make less money so you keep burning the trades.

Will definitely take a different approach next season.

I agree. I have no idea how some people have 0 trades left already. I have been trading like a maniac and have done some stupid sideways moves and still have 8 left. What are these freaks doing to be at 2 trades.

Says every single one of us every year, before falling for the same traps again and again. :$

No, I've gone away from my usual method this year. Will be more patient with my trades next year, which is my normal approach.

I thought being more aggressive was the way too go this year, but that was wrong. That and I've copped more injuries which hasn't help, but if I had saved more trades the injuries wouldn't be such an issue. Chicken and the egg sorta thing.

Same. Felt like I've had a decent crack at trading hard. I used 5 boosts in a row leading into the byes. Then 7 trades during the byes. After 2 this week I'll be down to 6.

I had my best start every but traded out players I should have kept, and kept players I should have traded (English). Has cost me dearly. I guess my post was more directed at myself than anyone else!!

Yeah I would normally never trade an uninjured player, but with the extra trades it felt like an option.

Hammy's and ankles are always a trade (I've learned this the hard way). Always seem to be minimum 3 weeks. And before anyone brings up Cripps this year, that wasn't a hammy - I don't know what it was, but it wasn't a hamstring.

I think aggressively upgrading will be the better approach, but we'll see how much carnage there is by rd 23

The thing is you'll never really know the best approach until after the season, I think being aggressive at the start still gives the best odds of a high placed finish.

Keeping players like Ridley, Whitfield this year instead of turfing them has set me back for sure, especially when I ended up needing to trade them anyway. Opportunity cost is a real thing, not being able to upgrade in say R7/8 because an underperforming guy gets injured and you're forced to sideways whilst other people grab rookies and upgrade.

The only way you can really make up that ground now is if players get injured/miss games with covid which is just really relying on luck and things you can't control.

It's actually a double whammy,if you don't replace them with the right players. I got rid of Whitfield after rnd 2 for Doc,and Milera (inj) for Sicily after rnd 1. Doch scored 69 more points by round 4 which was crucial in moving up rankings early, and 450 more since then, just those 2 early trades alone make a big difference.

Things I have learnt that will improve my game for next year:

Use the extra trades early on to correct keepers/mid-pricers, this sets you up early and if you do the corrections with an eye on the byes, so much the better. Be prepared to swallow some bitter medicine or risk being tailed off early.
Get your rookies right; this year I pretty much achieved getting my Rd 1 rookies spot on. This gave me the wiggle room for aforesaid keeper/cash cow midprice corrections.
Easy to say, but all the pointers were there for PMac, SDK, Martin, J Hayes, NOD for all to see. If you took those 5, your bench was off to a flyer.

Back yourself on what your eyes tell you in preference to previous performance - coaches are apt to recruit with specific roles in mind and also to identify role-switches midstream.

I second guessed myself out of Sicily, Hewett, Brodie and Witts leading up to round one, even though every instinct was screaming 'include'.

They were those corrective trades I went early on. If that had not occurred, I'd still have 7 trades and feel very competitive.

After next week, I'll have Jed A, PMac, Wehr, Hough and MRJ as bench/swing cover everywhere. That is the best bench I have ever put together and don't foresee the need to trade any of them out as I have enough cash set aside to trade Owens to a premo if I need to or want to sideways to better prems. This would not have occurred if I hadn't been looking for ways each week to improve my points and being prepared to slightly upgrade dollar wise for a large points return/dollar spent ratio. I only traded rookies as their position and cash became impossible to ignore.

So I think it was worth being aggressive, but you need to have a plan for the byes in mind, as well as nail it as much as possible early.

Pick resilient players instead of crocks or the age-weary warriors whenever possible. I have been pretty lucky this year on the carnage front, went with the approach that while anyone can get injured or ill, some can find an injury in the most benign circumstances while others just front up regardless.

English will never get a guernsey in my team again for this reason, scoring power be buggered. I did trade him as soon as the hammy pinged, but then brought him back last w/end. Lesson duly learned, he gets into the wrong places with great dexterity and regularity.

And another point if everyone was more conservative, I wouldn't have started panicking by rnd 7/8 after seeing all those teams full of better players than mine being well on the way to being completed, and starting to overhaul my early advantage.
