As an opposition coach, I would rather Dawson on the wing. He'll be out of the play a lot of the time, and wingmen are pretty easy to shut down one-on-one.

I know that clashes with people's "but he needs to be closer to goal!!" but wing is an absolute no man's land.
Yet, the opposition coaches this year who quelled his influence were the ones which got his opponent to drag him to a back pocket out of the play.

Dawson as a half back would be fine if we had a completely different game plan.

If we were setting up behind the ball and slingshotting fast up the ground, having an elite line breaker down there would work super well. His elite skills would create chances.

However how we actually play is slow, methodical, down the line to contests. So Dawson is useless for that. In that sort of gameplan he actually needs to play half forward so his skills and vision can penetrate a sea of defenders that have flooded back
In 2 years time i'd love to see a centre line and on ball brigade like this

C:- Dawson Berry Rankine
With Phillipou, Pedlar, Shoenberg, Taylor and Laird rotating through the centre with Berry

There is likely a difference between the 'public face' that they put out there, ie we're improving, heading back to finals, rebuild nearly done, and what they say internally.
I've heard Tex, Sloane and even Ricciuto say in the back half of the year that we need to get more quality into the midfield.
Having said that, I do think that they believe that, while it's not complete, we're only a few players away from being complete. I would say 5-6

I heard Sloane flatly reject the notion that our midfield needed to improve when on 5AA. Incredulous that the question was even being posed would be only just do his attitude justice.

Nix will be under severe pressure if we’re heading towards a similar result as this year. Doesn’t matter whether they like him or not, they’ve geared the selves at contending for a finals spot next year. He needs to get close.

They're still young and inexperienced .....still need to have some experience in the side ...albeit mental & physical

So is what Clarko proposing at NORTH wrong ? .....adding another 2-3 experienced players ....when 2 years ago NORTH's strategy was to cut super deep and play just kids

You reckon Clarko is going to be targeting mid 20 year old VFL players?

No .....but don't label mid 20 yo SANFL players as S**t either .....it's an unfair label

What age did Pods start his AFL career at GEEL ?

"Wings are out of the play" has to be one of the more laughable excuses for playing Dawson in defence that I've heard.

Langdon, Amon, Isaac Smith, Seedsman, even Dawson at times himself for Sydney last year, to name a few, have all dominated off a wing in recent seasons.

Dawson should have been an easy positional switch for Seed after sadly losing him this year - at least play Dawson there occasionally as part of his rotations if Nicks wanted to maintain some of Dawson's drive from D50.

Sidebottom, Langdon, Brayshaw, Seedsman, Gaff, Smith, Duncan, Hill etc don't seem to have an issue finding plenty of the ball.
Dawson is a great option coming out of defence due to his height.

It does come down to role and game plan but no reason we shouldn't put lots of ball through him.

Crikey let me guess, that’s apologists Mego Reds excuse?

I think McAsey was a very poor selection at 6. However Jones and McHenry are not quite as clear cut. Generally first round picks outside of the first half a dozen are almost as speculative as the second round. They’re not likely to be superstars. They’re more likely to be those good players that make up the numbers in successful teams. We have them in spades. What we’re missing is the superstars. We’ve had 3 picks in the top 6 in recent years and I think we’ve got 2 out of 3 right.

This is why IMO we have to hold on to pick 5 and next year’s first. If we give either of them away for Rankine, we negate the advantage that him nominating us, gives us.

There is no reason that we need to satisfy GC in that trade. Their alternative is nothing. I think we’ll do our best to turn the likes of McAsey and our later picks in both years into something that GC would prefer, but ultimately they don’t have much choice other than to accept our best offer. Believe me, if the shoe was on the other foot, we’d be getting the same from them.
Would be nice to see facts that support this.
Picks 11-20 ave 120 games.
Picks 21-30 ave 85 games.

Pick 16 averages 91 games adn pixk 19 averages 95 games while pick 6 averages 65 games.
Only 3 other players who have played for the crows who were taken at pick 16 are Burton, Thompson, Douglas while we bidded on Himmelberg.

If you don't like your pick you have choices, trade up, trade out or trade in a player.
If you do none then your saying your happy with the talent available

No point having your best kick go long down the line.

So now we are out of the SANFL - will we see some delistings?
Some we will .....but a few will be delayed till after Trade Period

Expect Davis, and possibly Brown / Seedsman retirement

Crouch, Rowe, Frampton, Sholl .....will likely have some kind of Trade Value

absolutely

i was previously of the opinion that newchurch and borlase would be kept as cat Bs but I now believe watching the last couple of weeks thay both will be delisted
Both Newchurch and Borlaise being kept, don't impact our list sizes ....unless there's a Cat "B" rookie on the horizon, we're not aware of ?

I know but they were so bad in these finals I think they will be cut free

list spots are not the only resource they consume...

davis gonsky too I forgot him

I know it doesnt help with senior list spots thats why
crouch, brown, billy, sholl, rowe will all get traded
and seed sadly retired

Season is now completely over so here it is. Thoughts?

No chance we are getting rid of all of those players. None at all.

Is there any point dumping the cat B rookies? Can those spots be transferred to normal rookie spots?

As far as I’m aware, no.

Newchurch had a really bad moment in the last quarter, basically stopped chasing his man onto the wing and tried to hand him off, ended up in a goal for the Legs. I don’t know if those are the kind of things that the coaches wouldn’t play him because of, but it was a really bad look.

absolutely

And replaced by who?..

What other Cat B’s/academy cat b players have we got to bring in to take their spots?..

We wont be getting rid of them if there’s no opportunity to replace them.

Nope, Cat B are separate. The only points would be if we were either so sure that a player wouldn't make it that it's better to not waste resources on them, or we wanted to replace them with another academy player.

They were both bad.. but i think you might want to re-watch the games.. thry certainly were the only ones that played poorly..

The majority of their team mates did too!
