We’ve whiffed on too many high end picks to just sit back and call it unfortunate. The fact that there’s seemingly no external pressure on our entire recruiting/list management team is astounding.Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
The fact is that McAsey was universally acknowledged as the best KPD prospect in his draft year. The fact that he hasn't developed anywhere near as well as we'd hoped is unfortunate, but the decision to draft McAsey instead of De Koning was the right one to make at the time.
Recruiters can't make decisions based on how players perform 3 years after a player is drafted - they can only judge them by what they produce before they're drafted.
SDK in good form, and has surpassed Fisher, but blind Freddy could see he was going to play well today against possibly the youngest forward line the crows have ever played, average of 44 games in the forward line (2 seasons).I hope Hamish and co are watching todays game, Sam De Koning was taken at pick 19 in 2019, the same draft we took 'the best kpd prospect', Fischer McAseyat pick 6. Never mind the fact one is killing it in the AFL and ones barely impacting the Sanfl, if you can't see a raw talent like De Koning and the upside he has in the current way the game is going then maybe recruiting has gone past you. Pick 6 was our highest ever pick at that point and we were screaming out for midfielders, but we take a kpd with limited upside.PLAYERCARDSTART3Fischer Mcasey

We weren't. They all did.Maybe we were the only club to rate McAsey over De Koning? Its not like he was rated as a generational kpd.

This is pretty much spot on
Thing is back in 2017 we had an open, fast ball movement game style that disguised his limitations and emphasised his talents. He could extract, pass it off and others would zoom zoom the ball all over the park - his slow, indecisive decision making was compensated by other players and style.
In a lot of ways he was first cog in a very fast engine. Now we don’t have anything to plug him into, and without that very specific approach to playing he’s a liability.
It’s not so much where has 2017 Crouch gone, as it is where has the team and game plan around him gone?
He’s no good except in a certain type of team that very specifically plays to his strengths.
And that team was flawed and isn’t coming back even if we wanted it too. No cattle and different coaching
Tex would have reached 600 if he didn't miss a year due to his ACL. Probably would have kicked 60 that yearWho can we target as our next forward? Need to identify a player on the cusp but behind an established forward? Like the sun's with Chol did.
Perhaps Neale at Geelong? Sproule or Riccardi from GWS? Fullarton and McStay from the Lions? Amarty at the swans? Personally I like Amarty most.
Let's face it, our club has been a joke at developing forwards throughout its history. Even Tex, as much as I love him and cherish his time at the club, has underperformed IMO. He kicked over 100 goals in 30 or so games as a teenager in the SANFL. To not reach 600 in his AFL career would be disappointing. Was his development stifled when he came to us?
Our leading goal kickers list is littered with players we traded in. We can't develop them ourselves.
Betts is 3rd on our all time list. Jenkins 4th. Welsh 7th. Jarman 8th. Tommy Lynch 10th. All traded in, we didn't develop them from kids. 5 of our top 10 goal kickers of all time.
9 of our top 20 goal kickers of all time are midfielders. This shows our forwards are not career crows. Tex is the only full time forward we have had to reach 150 games... I think Ian Perrie and Robran the only other 2 with over 100 games.
Fog and berg aren't looking like making it although fog showed some glimpses today but history shows it will be followed by 5 disappointing games.
I'd love to see Murray thrown forward with Thilthorpe, and hope the club is looking at possible trade options.

Murray attacks the ball in a way that if he doesn't mark it, be sure as hell it will get to ground where any one of our 16 short people could rove it.Good post.
I’d like to see Murray tried up forward too. The way we bomb it long we need someone who can contest in the air and that’s something he does well.
And I’d bring McAsey or Worrell in to play down Back.
It’s a Vader fact. How the duck would you know this?
I mean, it’s literally impossible to know either way, as a supporter. Vader doesn’t know, neither do you and IIt’s a Vader fact.
He can’t possibly where the other recruiters rated him and as someone else mentioned, he’s slow and lacked agility. Recruiters would have seen that and queried how it would translate to the AFL and now we’ve seen it doesn’t even translate to the SANFL.
I was at the sanfl last night, he was near his opponent who wasn’t quick but easily got to the ball ahead of him and Fish couldn’t even get close enough to get a hand on him.
Only one of us is making the statement and speaking on behalf of every single one of the other 17 recruiters.I mean, it’s literally impossible to know either way, as a supporter. Vader doesn’t know, neither do you and I
What we do know is that McAsey isn’t close to the player we thought he was. Looking like the biggest pick blunder out of a series of them
That’s partially true, but I think his Hands inside the pack use to be a lot cleaner, and his decision making sharper.
His kicking was always limited but he was able to hit clean short passes and play within his limitations.
All the positive aspects of his game have disappeared.
Even his late season form in 2020 was better than it is now.
It’s a Vader fact.

Considering we need list spots, we should consider paying out his contract at the end of the year.I mean, it’s literally impossible to know either way, as a supporter. Vader doesn’t know, neither do you and I

Also lost 2 years or so of quality unrestricted footy with his foot problems (which was caused by the morons in charge).. which is what caused his form to dip and not kick as many goals those years.Tex would have reached 600 if he didn't miss a year due to his ACL. Probably would have kicked 60 that year
Ive liked the small amount Ive seen of Amartey, handy chop out ruck too. Someone on here said a year or two ago that we had interest in Riccardi. Mcstay allegedly has offers up to 5 years and around $600k which is too pricy for me.Who can we target as our next forward? Need to identify a player on the cusp but behind an established forward? Like the sun's with Chol did.

In his draft year iirc it was shallow in terms of good key forwards so there was always a question mark as he never had to stand a max king for example. We gambled as it was hoped he would be the replacement for talia.I mean, it’s literally impossible to know either way, as a supporter. Vader doesn’t know, neither do you and I

Check out the draft boards to see who the top mids are. Wardlaw, tsatsas, D'aloia are a few of the higher rated ones. If we finish bottom 3 we shoukd get a good oneSo posters in the know. Who do we take at pick 3/4 . ?
