Unfortunately, given the atrociously poor development of our youth, our pathetic policy that sees the club rate experience over youth regardless of form, our love of nice guys who try/train hard over elite highly skilled guys and our numerous misses with first round picks at the draft table in the past 5 to 10 years.. Keays is one of our best midfielders..

So we are stuck with him, laird and crouch at the moment until the club finally starts to ween itself off of them..

And no one, who seriously wants to see the team lift itself out of the bottom 5 in the next couple of years, should be at all happy about that.

If you are watching these three and saying to yourself “yeah, thats a midfield “go to” combo that can get us into the finals and win us a flag”.. I’m sorry to break it to you but your ****ing kidding yourself.

They are hacks who’s best attribute is their ability to get their hands on a fair bit of the footy.. 30+ meaningless possessions each every week = job done!.

Don’t blame the player (in the case of Keays/Laird), blame the midfield mix and our lack of classy players

this is me from feb 2021. I think anyone watching with any idea about footy would think it highly likely.

My worry is that the junior mids are coached to play a role around supporting the senior mids rather than hunting the pill themselves. I don't think it's Jones' job to get 30 touches, he's there to facilitate the primary mids getting their hands on it.

The Keays hate bandwagon is more than just one person.

There are multiple people of this forum who don't want him on the list and want him gone for some reason.

apart from the odd BC OTT rant, I don't think I've seen anyone post that they just want him gone. His strengths are well known and agreed to and so are his weaknesses. He's a cog in the worst midfield in the comp, but individually he and Laird would warrant a spot in all midfields. It needs to improve and it was looking much better with him and Laird without Sloane and Crouch. But if you wouldn't package one of those 2 up to get an elite mid with speed that can spread forward from a stoppage and deliver well then you've not been taking much notice of our midfield the last few years.

thats just another load of shite made up by some of the blokes in here that will defend ben till the death (not you) and refuse to accept that he’s just not that good.

what I have consistently said, for many months now, is that we cannot have all three of keays, laird and mcrouch in the same midfield.

although it is still not ideal.. you can have 1 main “go to“ experienced midfielder in your team that has poor skills by hand and foot, makes shit decisions, executes poorly and generally does duck all damage to the opposition… but gets a heap of possessions and tries their heart out..

But you definitely cant have bloody three of them.

two of them need to be weeded out ASAP.. and I really couldnt give a rats arse which two at this point. all three are b grade mids and havent got an elite bone among them.

they’ve been completely pantsed by some of the comps best midfields in the past 6 weeks and then they came up against the worst team in the comp last w/e and still didnt really show any signs of dominance.. yet the club continues to persist with them like its all of a sudden gonna miraculously change and they will become the next gun midfield combination of the comp!… how the duck can people here be happy about this?

the levels of delusion from a fair few in here to think these three are great a-grade mids is duckn hysterical.. but fine.. they can continue to keep their heads firmly planted in the sand whilst the results speak loudly for themselves.. just as I, and a few others here that have woken up to it, will continue to highlight our absolutely garbage midfield that has these three lads as the main components. one of the leagues worst.

the ostriches will have to remove their heads from the sand and join us in realising this eventually.. or not.

and this is why our rebuild is done. We think we've got the midfield to match it with the best because our 3 main guys all share 90 touches between themselves. That's elite, right? So all we're doing is pissing around with both ends of the ground because we've locked the stacked midfield in for the next 3 years as we go about striving for 8th. It's ****ed.

Sloane was at the desk on AFL 360 and when asked what's the worst thing that could happen this week he said Tex to get a 3 year deal and take all the money so there wouldn't be any left for him for his next contract.


Which to me set off a few alarm bells

obviously that's humour, but there's no doubt that this time next year, if not signed, we'll be hearing that there's contract offers from other clubs for Rory. As soon as he has a decent game or 2, his contract situation and number of suitors will magically become public knowledge.

Not many on this board will disagree with you that all 3 of Keays, Laird & Crouch cannot be in our midfield... particularly as we look to rebuild.

Denying Hately & Berry midfield minutes since Crouch's return has been a crazy big step backwards.

However, both Keays & Laird have performed consistently for our side & would be top 5 in our B&F. The same can't be said for Crouch who has been ordinary.

Your regular attacks on Keays, one of our better players has come across a little unhinged... as he is hardly the main problem with our midfield.

I mean yeah we should have won the St Kilda game. Even with shitty goalkicking we were in front most the night.

The other matches though it just felt like the opposition did the bare minimum and still tossed us aside fairly comfortably.

To be fair, I know a bunch of members who didn't go, and it was solely due to weather.

Now, if we were an incredibly hot side, would they have braved it? Probably. But they're also not giving their membership up anytime soon

We havent played finals in 5 years.. the last two years we’ve come last and 4th last.. we are currently heading for another bottom 5 finish..

Our complete lack of class in our midfield, the engine room of any team, lead by laird, crouch, keays and sloane before his knee is the main factor in our poor results of the past couple of years..

Yet several here say sweet **** all about these lads performances, some actually constantly praise them regardless!, and choose to instead blame the youth and players with less than 50 games under their belts for our current predicament. Now thats the definition of unhinged.

I like how Rendell goes with Rankine and Lukocious staying on the Gold Coast as if he has the inside word. It's been openly talked about for a few weeks in the media. I don't think either SA clubs are even talking to them.

You picked a really bad example to make that point. Keays is twice the player he was when he came to the club - if anything he's a big tick for the club's capacity to develop players.

Laird and mcadam?… one turns 29 this year and the other just turned 27!..

Why the hell would you pick those two to use as examples of our “great recent development”?..

Geez.. lucky a 28, soon to be 29, year old Laird is developing well.. I mean, he should be a gun by the time he reaches retirement age yeah?!…

And Mcadam came to the club as a mature ager..

Six to eight weeks ago some on here (not me) had McAdam as a “how soon can we delist this bloke” candidate.. he’s come back into the side, after a few SANFL games earlier in the year, and shown again why he’s valued…
And now some of the same geniuses in here are suggesting we should trade him while his value is high!!…

I don't think hes big enough to be one of the main inside mids, but I could see him on a wing with stints on the ball

Stephen Coniglio is one of the better inside mids in the comp, and has a perfect blend of inside/outside capability.

He's 1cm taller than Chayce. This whole thing that inside mids need to be giants and >90kg gets a bit silly sometimes.

Regardless I prefer he stays at HB. I really like what he's doing both from an attacking and defensive viewpoint.

He's 1cm taller than Chayce. This whole thing that inside mids need to be giants and >90kg gets a bit silly sometimes.

Regardless I prefer he stays at HB. I really like what he's doing both from an attacking and defensive viewpoint.

compare Laird's body shape to Jones'. Laird is more solid.
