Say we have a crack at JHF and it doesn't work out. The player I'd be keen to have a very good look at in terms of recruiting is Mattaes Phillopou.

192 cm. Athletic (ex basketballer), good leap and mark. Has moved into midfield and is proving dynamic. Keen to see how he goes over the rest of the season, but could be a perfect pick.

Thoughts Mutineer ?? You seen much of him lately?

I read an article from somewhere today talking about the five obvious targets for us in the trade period at the end of the year Rankine, Horne-Francis, Highmore, Lukosius and Gould.
Note that each is a South Australian product which indicates to me that the writer of the article - as well as most - believe that only a South Australian returning home would possible want to come and play for us!
In the first instance, I don't really want any of these; JHF would cost far too much (Rachele and pick one this year and next), Rankine is a maybe but probably no, Highmore only for a fourth round pick and then probably not, Lukosius is also a maybe but is currently covered by Dawson, Hinge and Smith and Gould is probably a no.
If we're going to get into trading we need to go big and then target big. And be prepared to lose things we might normally keep - players and picks. AND GO WHEREVER WE NEED TO GO TO FIND THE ELITE PLAYER WE WANT.

Odd post.
Don't want to pay overs for JHF but at the end advocating being prepared to lose players and picks.

I don’t see a problem with it, as long as we surround them with classy users, both on the inside and outside

Ideally you rotate those three, plus two or three classier/more gamebreaking players through our midfield eventually
yeah but if you play all 3 its one less dynamic type. Hopefully Pedlar and Schoenberg turn it around, and we add another mid with our first pick. Soligo as a balanced mid, Dawson and Cook as the wings, plus 2 of Keays, Hateley, Berry gives us an 8 man midfield

I get it, and if either of Schoenberg or Pedlar turn things around soon and overtake one of Hately or Berry then great, but it’s far, far from a certainty at this point in time

I guess my point is that, as long as Berry/Hately keep developing and we surround them with a couple of top-line dynamic mids (classy users and/or speedy guys), then I think we’ll be fine

like i said im happy for both to play now but in a couple years id like to see a more dynamic mix

Can't believe how this guy skates through with no criticism, has been our worst captain by a country mile.

Pay his contract out and get him out of the club ASAP.

There's a group of players that are very unhappy with the way the club has handled their concerns over a few trivial matters of the camp. It's been bubbling away and the coaches have done nothing to alleviate the issues and most likely have made it worse with their arrogance. These players are reminded that they cannot comment publicly on the camp due to their contract and some form of NDA. Whilst this is bubbling away and there's disenfranchised players, what kind of person stands up on behalf of Admin and goes public with how brilliant the camp was for them personally? A moron or a narcissist? Maybe somewhere on both scales. Certainly not anyone that you'd want as captain of a club unless you wanted to plumb the depths. And like VB, totally oblivious as to when the time has come to hand it over. VB the only captain in the last 2-3 decades to force the club to remove the captaincy from him. That's our culture right there. Selfish.

Hately surprisingly looked great as the inside MID ....offers much more than Crouch

Hately stands tall in the contest, doesn't panic with his disposal, like Crouch does .....but like Crouch, he's not quick, so it's one or the other

How is the movement of Hately out of the stoppages due to Crouch not a coaching failure though? We can all see it. If they can't then their understanding is about as deep as looking at the stats sheet on afl.com

That's disrespectful to a great player of the club .....the guy was loyal to a tee, when we needed him most

Of course he's getting a bit long in the tooth now & injury prone .....but please, respect what he has contributed

$850k per year when you've become a $450k player buys a shit truck of loyalty. He's been a disaster of a captain.

You've gotta take the small wins like Hately looking like an AFL player, because that's all we're getting these days. No big wins

Dawson was a pretty big win.
Rachele looks like a big win - particularly given the uncertainty surround VIC kids form worth Covid
Soligo as pick 38 ish looks outstanding
Berry has really progressed this year

We need a star young midfielder and a centre half back and we have the complete basis of a contending squad. Will still need to add pieces as all rising sides do but fix those two glaring holes and the initial challenge is complete

I think, if you re-read my posts, I am actually agreeing with you

Am I the only person concerned with Hately coming on okay?

He's not going to be any better than what we currently have. He's slow, not athletic and has poor foot skills.

Yes good on him for showing improvement and he's performing better than Crouch, but do we want another permanent B grade mid with poor skills? How is this going to help us?

I know this is tough on the guy, but we gotta be real about the future of our midfield.

If you are worried that he makes 3 of the same then it's obvious that we just put them all up for trade and sell the one that gets us the best return, factoring in years left. Which of Laird and Keays do you prefer to push out of the club? I'm assuming Crouch stats given no suitors.

Is a pipe dream for now

Can't recall which of us said it's a club held deliberate strategy and won't change and that we only employ coaches with aligning philosophies. It's a pipe dream until the club is rebuilt from scratch and every remnant of Neil Craig philosoohy is burnt to the ground. Sadly, wgen Nix is arseholed, it'll be ****ing VB as the interim and he'll probably keep the gig. The only captain in 20+ years that didn't choose to resign the role, there's our version of a culture leader.

I would have thought getting someone like silvers from a club like hawthorn would cut through the fog on this. Surely he could see from his position where the structural problems lay having been a part of a different club that has had success

Interestingly Neil Craig often used to run large numbers thru midfield , I remember being at the scg when we had Roo Goodwin Edwards McLeod etc and he started the game with Skipworth and some other mo name mids in the centre square

We won against the odds

big club, may not have had much to do with the football culture side of things. Could literally have had zero involvement.

Scott burns was also playing for Collingwood when Neil Craig was coaching hence he's a part of the problem. I heard he likes Murphy cos Murphy used to have a Neil Craig poster on his wall.

would scott burns have gotten his defensive line job if he didn't align with Roo's philosophies on footy? If he disagreed strongly in his interviews, do you reckon he gets employed?

Craig had 2 midfields.

The engine drivers and the cruise controllers

The engine drivers were Roo, McLeod, Edwards and Goodwin - come the end of the quarters or when the game was in control he would switch in Skipworth, Thompson and Douglas etc

This is the basis of the Master/Apprentice/Trainee philosophy where each cog is replaced - not by ability but seniority

Its why Dawson is a spare parts defender

He disagreed once
