would scott burns have gotten his defensive line job if he didn't align with Roo's philosophies on footy? If he disagreed strongly in his interviews, do you reckon he gets employed?
Bit over the top even by your standards mate..😉

Get a hobby man

this is my hobby. Care to answer the question or will doing so blow apart your belief system? You hire many people that openly disagreed with your core philosophies in their interview? Shall I answer for you? Ok, how does sweet **** all sound. You've not hired a single person that sat in front of you and made it clear they were on a different page to you. Or perhaps you've never actually been in a position to hire anybody.

Craig had 2 midfields.

The engine drivers and the cruise controllers

The engine drivers were Roo, McLeod, Edwards and Goodwin - come the end of the quarters or when the game was in control he would switch in Skipworth, Thompson and Douglas etc

This is the basis of the Master/Apprentice/Trainee philosophy where each cog is replaced - not by ability but seniority

Its why Dawson is a spare parts defender
Not sure re that

McLeod played alot of half back , Edwards half forward / half back , Goodwin even had a stint forward . Roo played alot forward

The 2006 round 2 game just featured on afl.com Roo barely went into midfield all game

Nicks thinks we don’t have enough guys capable going thru midfield and also by picking Matt crouch he is handcuffing himself as Matt only plays centre square mid

It all looked better when Hately and Berry were getting large minutes and Matt sanfl … just needed to try add another layer or 2 despite min options

I've never worked for recruiting or been on a panel to hire someone. I really hope you haven't either.

Would be interested to know how the midfield is structured for the Crows.

I follow the Eagles closely in the SANFL and Jade Sheedy has proven to be a very good coach since day one. As is the nature of SANFL, he has had to rotate many players through as they move on.

They have a position in their midfield called “M1”. I’ve most recently heard Riley Knight talk about how he’s moved in to the role, hence his high possessions and magnificent form. Dane McFarlane talked of training for it earlier in the season and getting advice from James Tsitas, who was “M1” last year and won a Magarey before joining Gold Coast Suns. Jordan Foote talked of playing this role the season before when he won the Jack Oatey kicking 5 goals in the GF.

“M1” is the attacking midfielder, or Midfielder 1, and clearly this position needs other midfielders playing their role to work. It also requires a player who generally speaking, would beat an opponent one on one and when given the opportunity, would kick the goal. It also helps to have a dominant ruckman.

Is this a decent philosophy on how to run a midfield? Is Keays this “M1” player for us in the midfield or we don’t run this way? Many seem perplexed we see a midfield of Keays, Laird and Crouch week to week, with a real lack of forward penetration from each of these players. Or is this group, combined with O’Brien, just better at limiting damage from the opposition and we try to win games from there?

Dawson seems to me the only player we have that could potentially fulfill the position of an effective attacking midfielder. We have plenty who could play a good role in providing for the M1 or maybe pinch hit for a small time. I also don’t see O’Brien tapping it down the throat of our midfielder, ever. At least Strauchan was able to show he could do this on occasion in his small opportunity, despite not being as competitive with the opposition ruckman as O’Brien is contest to contest.

Anyway, it’s obvious we need to trade for or bring in via draft a top 5 competition wide midfielder to be competitive and probably another player that is top 10 to climb right to the top. Maybe Dawson and Rachele could get there? Or is Dawson clearly not good enough, hence playing in the back line or wing at best this season? Then we need a ruckman with potential to be better than what we have, but this is priority two, behind finding a couple of gun midfielders.

To me, the rest of the list is fairly solid and building ok. Instead of building a side around some stars, we’re setting up a good solid platform of role players, perhaps with the hope of injecting those star players to a ready made platform in the near future?

Or, is our midfield philosophy just not up to scratch? Are they missing a trick in not trying Dawson, or even a player like Doedee, in the midfield more. Nicks was a defensive minded player. Does he need to add to the coaching group a sharper mind to manage the midfield along with “the cattle”?

Crouch for Aaron Francis straight swap? We get a b grade key sized defender,/ and break glass forward means we can be more relaxed delisting Frampton and even himmelberg
Not sure I want Francis at the crows. I don't want Crouch either for that matter but I feel he isn't going anywhere unfortunately. He will see out his contract and be delisted next year imo.

Agree re Dawson !

At least should be something we try for parts of game where he goes into midfield and becomes the big dog

Not the worst idea even though Francis is a bit part player with a low work rate

Maybe he could thrive more back in home state

Lots of people get employed in senior roles when they don’t align with the employer they are trying to join! Seriously mate relax a bit

Undeniably Burns was highly regarded in the industry before he came to us. Not everything and everyone employed at the club is hopeless or incompetent

I don’t think our issue is whether we run a system with an M1 in it. The issue is that we only run to M4 and those roles are up against more damaging midfielders and in more numbers. So our ball winning grunts are outnumbered and constantly more gassed than their direct opposition.

Burns past as a collingwood player , west coast and hawks assistant coach would have more influence in shaping him than any historical events that have happened at the crows , that’s for sure

How do you know this? Is it results telling you this or just a belief created from nothingness?

This would just be poor business. Matt Crouch is an all-Australian. You don’t swap him for a bloke who can’t get a game at Essendon and should be delisted. Yes, Matty has dropped off. But there’s still player in there. With currency.

Neither are worth anything. If someone offers us a future 3rd round pick for Matt, we take it and run.

i reckon players on the fringe like matt you package up with a pick to get a better pick. No point getting another pick 45 into the place, I'd trade him and our presumed second (23) for anything around the late teens area.

that said, he could get his power and intensity back and be ok again at some point. Personally I'd prefer to cash in the value of either Keays or Laird and then Matt can stay as a backup.

Not a surprise at all. But even though you've not yet had the responsibility of employing someone, do you think that you'd employ someone who openly makes it clear that they disagree with your core philosophies? Do you think our club is different to near every other person/entity?

I don't understand the context? I don't even know how we got onto interview techniques! What core philosophies are you talking about relating to coaches?
