Just as an FYI, Higgins and Dahl were on 500K each and Sel would have been similar, if not a bit lower. Those 3 going alone will free up around 1.5 MIL in the cap

Do Geelong supporters think the club has some "creative" forms of managing the cap?

Or is there some genuine tooth fairy factor amongst the fan base?

Umm... only if you replace them with 3 players who you are paying zero. Or you enter next year with 3 players less on your list. If you replace a player on $500k with a player on $850k you actually free up -350 thousand. Geelong seem to use different maths to everyone else.

Up to oppos to believe whatever they want to believe, but as has been documented many times, our players take less because we've always had a salary cap structure that's about the whole club rather than any one individual.

Playera get paid a lot during their prime - but not as much as they could command on the open market as is common -, and then take less towards the end of their careers. Both Hawk and Selwood have publicly been reported as being on sub 500K, with Hawkins said to be 300K next year.

We also don't have a lot of high end picks, and more of them are rookies, older guys, cat b's, Irish players, locals, or elevated from the VFL, so they never expect a big pay day.

You'll also notice, that the way our retirements end up, we never end up having a ton of stars being on massive money, because of the aforementioned. They earn their money early, and then scale back allowing more cap for other targets/internal players who have elevated their game significantly.

But it's fine if you'd just like to say we're cheating the cap. That's your prerogative.

The only thing I’m worried about with Wardlaw is his hammies but I’ve spoken to some people that know a bit about that stuff and they said it won’t be a problem.
We don’t want this to be another Selwood situation.
I don’t think there has been a better drop of luck bestowed upon a highly talented player than Selwood in terms of injury. For him to be under doubt from a knee injury in his draft year and go on to play 350 games is something ridiculous. Geelong we’re blessed with having most of their star players - bar freak injuries like Egan - injury free for nearly their whole career.

Just from write ups - I can’t speak to vision - how does Wardlaw stack up against explosive inside types like Cooney and Scully?

The only reason I ask is that despite Cooney’s Brownlow, they both had mediocre careers due to (I think) hamstring injuries.

Fair point. But I'm also taking into account drafting 3 guys, and then letting guys like Narkle and Ratugolea go, who would have been on more than new base contract draftees will be on.

Anyway, that's enough of this. Someone originally discussed the salaries of the 3 retirees, and Higgins' salary was speculated as he was one of your boys - so I saw that and provided some info. Now unfortunately, it's turned into a pile on for no reason at all, from mods and posters alike, so I'm not gonna take the bait anymore.

See ya.

Do Geelong sup

Nothing to see here. Quite obviously no one on the Geelong list is getting paid apart from Jack Bowes.

Absolutely Selwood was lucky to be drafted to Geelong, but Geelong was lucky to draft Selwood also.

Well I’m no expert, just a casual. But the difference with him and Scully would be that Scully trained harder than maybe any junior ever.

As for Cooney, I honestly can’t remember watching him before his injuries.

Im worried about the hammies too, and even though they think it can be sorted, they’re not his doctor.

Geelong have a lot of players in their side who would be on average wage…
Bews, Holmes, Atkins, Kolodjashnij, Blicavs, Stanley, Miers, Close, Henry, Rohan, Smith, Tuohy, the list goes on & on…. I doubt these guys are on much money.
Danger, Cameron & Stewart (maybe Guthrie) are the only ones on really good coin.
Selwood, Higgins & Dahl will clear 1.2mil. Hawkins is cheap as chips.
In saying that, Geelong will need money for Bruhn & Ollie Henry, plus saving some for Stengle & DeKoning (both would be on nothing)
Hopefully we get Bowes, but I can certainly see the appeal of him choosing Geelong over us.

That last comment should get you banned for a month...:laughv1:

Cooney had problematic knees I think.

Thought it didn’t happen till after he was drafted? From memory I think he was drafted off the back of his skill and explosive speed? Did pretty well till that left him. Still had a decent career despite his injury problems. Cooney is a bit of a clown in the media but he was pretty tough when it came to playing through injury.
