The defensive wing role is his to keep. Did pretty well last year given the injuries in the Pre-season and early in the season proper. Turns 27 next month so should be approaching his peak as a player. A chance to be the next skipper and bleeds blue and white. The challenge now is to return to his 2020 B&F form albeit in a different position.

An intriguing player. Seemed to fall out of favour with Rhys & Nobes and was reportedly shopped around over the last trade periods. As a 29 year old in a young side is clearly playing for his future. It’s all about the defensive side of the game for him. Would want to start in the side rd 1 or might be a long season. Yet he still brings a lot to the table with his ball winning ability and long left leg.

Yeah but hopefully just throw them onto the vfl list then if any good they can come into contention mid year in the draft

keep the options open
I'm torn between having an addiontal 6 months with a key defender developing on the list vs keeping a spot open for a gun kid who's missed out on being drafted and playing well in the state leagues. Clubs record in picking up these players is pretty hit and miss so far. Edwards in but Ham and Hosie out.
Comes down to how well we think that we can keep injuries at a minimum and the depth we have at the position. Any 2 of mckay, walker, corr injured and we'll be in trouble.

I think tZ is right. We're not winning the flag this year and if we get long-term injuries to our key defender stocks, depending on the timing we can bring one in via the SSP or MSD second round to limit the damage. Better off ensuring we have a list spot for a MSD potential bargain from a Vic player whose barely played the last couple of years (on the very unlikely chance we don't have a anyone on the LTI list).

15. Atu

It is interesting that Nobes highlighted our need for a small pressure forward and yet we recruited Atu as a forward & turned him into a defender. In the race to fill Ats’ rebounding defender’s spot. As 2021 was his first year as a defender at senior level it is no surprise that he still has some work to do on the one-on-one defending part of the gig. However he has some toe and doesn’t shun contact. 2022 is likely to be a learning year for him as he completes the transition from small forward to defender.

I liked Atu in his games this year. Love his dash of half back. Very keen to see what he can do this year.

Going to be interesting if we give him another contract past 2022

He'll be returning to half back this year and hopefully a return to 2020 form

I think he stays wing 1 more year then replaces hall at half back next year
We need to play our guys in their best positions and that’s HB for silver. We also need to build our defense for next 4-5 years and surely Luke is a key part to that.
I think Lazaro with his hard two way running is suited to a wing

16. Aiden Bonar

I reckon he has kicked a black cat while walking under a ladder. Only 22 games after four years. He testing on the draft camp indicated an explosive athlete so it has been a matter of finding his best position. Medium defender, able to play on talls and smalls seems to be it. We brought him straight back in to the seniors in 2021 after another injury & on the back of no VFL footy so we must rate him. Best 22 even though he is still learning the defender’s trade.

Loving these insights and commentary Wonderdog. Anything to help provide some colour and debate to a long offseason. Keep it coming!!!

17. Lachie Young

He started last year in his customary role as a Hb and then moved to a wing before fallling out of the side. This means he is in the race to take the spots vacated by both Froggy and Ats. A little older than others in this race. He is 189 cms with a bit of toe,not yet 23 and only played 21 games so he has a fair bit going for him. However he needs to nail down a spot soon or the development of the younger players will push him off the list.

18. Hugh Greenwood

Not just another hard nut inside mid. He has different but complimentary skills to Cunners. Cunners is the ball hunter & distributor. Hugh is the ball denier by preventing the opposition getting it thru his tackling. Provides another layer of support & protection for the young mids. Good overhead & will spend time forward.

19. Josh Walker

Given we have boosted our tall forward stocks in recent drafts there does not seem any need for Josh to play forward barring catastrophic injuries. This is good news as Josh clearly plays his best footy behind the ball. It will be interesting to see if we play Josh in defence alongside BMac & Aidan Corr or if we mix & match with a collection of mid sizers such as Bonar. He is whole hearted & leaves nothing in the locker room but 2022 may be his last year.

20. Souva

We targeted Souva so much in 2021 as he was our only realistic tall marking option as the other talls, X & Tom C, were primarily rucks rather than genuine forwards. The addition of CCJ should change the over reliance on Souva given that CCJ seems to have better developed forward craft. It was a break out last year for Souva and the upward trend should continue as our mids and ball movement develop.

Given the question marks over Jed’s future, what do those who’ve made it out to training think about Hore? In particular, his skill set, his likelihood of making our best 22, and where he fits in?

On paper he seems like depth for Ziebell: a mid bodied defender with an aptitude for interceptions. I was just doing a comparison of Hore’s 2019 stats against Jack’s from last year, and was surprised to see MH averaged higher for intercepts.

Was missing on mondays training. Not sure if he's got covid, been told he'll play vfl or injured again. Could simply have just missed it.
His stats were decent but I'd be going for a key position defender tbh. We're desperate for that height. If hore can get properly fit then I say give him a contract (as you say his intercept stats are good) and see where it goes, his age/games profile is against him though.

21. CCJ

It was obvious last year that we needed another tall marking target in the forward Line. There were a few available at trade time but CCJ was the only
one who could genuinely ruck. His recruitment not only provides support for Souva but also helps with the transition from Goldy as he nears the end. It will be interesting to see how much ruck time CCJ gets, especially as the season goes on & Goldy tires.

I know Youseph Dib was training with our VFL side, he was probably the unluckiest player not to get drafted last year. Would happily have him on the list as a replacement for Jed.

A genuine key defender would be the ideal scenario though.
