No offense here, but yeah that comment is usually reserved for those that don't watch much SANFL.
It works extremely well.
As the rule is clear, known, black and white .. teams and supporters adjust for it, there's only a handful of these frees per game... seriously..how many did you see today? 3 or 4?
And no one complains cuz its known.
Still plenty of boundary throw ins.
The AFL issue is the random umpire discretion. This discretion should never ever ever be a rule in sport!!!

When they brought it in I thought it was a terrible decision. That’s not football.
Now I think it’s clear and works really well. Especially between the arcs.

Perfect. Clear. Doesn't take ruckmen out of the game.

I didn't like the rule at first because it penalized skill errors. Since then, I love the rule. Like you said it makes it black and white. Players know the rule and both sides position themselves knowing it's an automatic free kick.

I hate watching players deliberately not compete for ball to get an out of bounds scenario

Also dislike the fact you can make the correct decision and kick and miss it by a metre and get penalised

The mantra of just about every AFL club/coach is to create stoppages and run their playback from the stoppages

That is why there are so many dump kicks wide. If can't get a clean play push it out, create stoppages, run the playbook.



Would be a great rule to bring in. But given the way AFL football is played it won't happen.

and most of our other youth.
and many of our other mid aged and one or two senior players, except the one’s I’ll mention below.

i’m fine with having parnell and hamill on the list next year and give them one last go.. but I have my doubts even though both had way better second halves in that game we just watched..

what I’m not fine with is;

the coaching of Godden and nicksy.. not convinced these two are getting the best out of our list.

our soft underbelly. Which has been a massive issue at this club for a very long time now.

and the sooner Roo, sloane, keays, murphy are out of the club/out of the 22.. the better off we’ll be..

i think Hamish O and Reid need to be moved on.. we need fresh eyes and ideas in these two roles..

and I’m certainly not fine with 25 years without a flag. Not fxxkn fine at all. I watch this sport to see my team win a flag. Not to just perform well and be competitive and think near enough is good enough.

Spot on.
It makes fwds up the ground think about it. Be in position.
Its also a counter to the flood behind the ball. You need to stop the auto turnover if your team ' heads to the boundary'.
Leaving the umps to make an interpretation is a recipe for disaster...and frankly not what rules of any game should be!! Rules need to be 100%, not discretion.

Better team played the better half of football. Sturt seemed out of gas in the last 1/4 and I think a major turning point was Doyle going down. Wouldn’t be surprised if we go out in straight sets now. We’ve struggle to beat Centrals twice this year.

So...are you saying if they miss a goal by a metre, we should just give it a goal?

So many just disgustingly dumb decisions in the first half when coming out of our defense.. so much “lets look sideways first before anything” bullshit.

sturt simply attacked and we just fluffed around with it. Its so dumb and so frustrating to watch.

our midfield was atrocious in that first half.. one decent kick into our forward line in an entire half of footy from our mids.. the one to Cook from dowling. ONE!!!.. and these blokes wanna call themselves AFL midfielders?….Pffffft.

and Godden’s “just man space” policy when the opponents have the ball in our forward half is fxxkn laughable.. its failed a thousand times over yet he still has them do it.

Oppositions simply chip the ball out of defence with ease.

That situation wouldn't result in a free kick, though. It has to be an actual disposal without anyone touching it on the way over the line.

I'm not a fan personally, but I can live with it between the arcs like it's currently done in AFLW.

I don’t mind the rule, I think it serves the SANFL well and easier for the umpires. I wouldn’t have a problem with it being just between the arcs but would really like the umpires being very harsh on players shepherding the ball over the line or just not trying to keep it in resulting in a throw in.
