Not 100 percent sure but I thought the rule read if you traded your own F2 you couldn't.
We only have Melbourne's F2 now.
No, just need a pick from that round

Where are the posters saying we are a risk averse boring footy club?

- Again this year we have pulled off the biggest pick swap/draft coup by far on draft night. We have got a likely elite player due to our maneuvering both on draft night and prior (getting GCS pick 14 was integral)

- Last 2 years we have brought in elite players Rankine and Dawson and had red hot cracks at others inc Day and Redman (hard to extract clearly). Better in-bound elite players than any other club. One for a bargain price. The other for market value (which will be unders over time)

- We aggressively chased Petty to the point where it now seems fait accompli we get him over the next 1-2 years

- We have executed more exceptional pick swaps that probably any other team in recent years (the Blues pick which would have nabbed Anderson if the AFL wasnt so corrupt, the Pedlar pick from a 2 pick slide, various other picks grabbing us extra points or extras second rounders). Even this year ending up correctly identifying Kangas and Suns as bottom 4-5 teams and ending up with their second rounders - excellent forecasting and pick swaps by our team

- We have chased more AFL 'bad boys' than any other club - Oliver, Martin and even Carey previously. What other club has chased as many other bad boys. Totally contradicts the narrative of many here

I am sick of hearing about the club being boring and conservative. The above proves we are NOT - once and for all

Even going back 10 years or so, we weren't that risk adverse. It's just when we took risks, they blew up in our faces due to incompetence.

It's a bit of a hold-over from the 2000s though and the crow-bots era.

West coast have possibly had the best record of playing finals consistantly in the AFL since it became a national comp.

West coast at Optus stadium is never an easy task.. and they play half their games a year there.

I seriously think west coast could finish anywhere between 10th and 18th next year.. would never rule them out moving up the ladder.

Had a list decimated by injury this season.

It wouldve been a massive risk for the crows to do 8 this year for west coasts f1.. especially considering the crows could potentially have a F/S in Tyler Welsh next year that could end up a top 5 pick.. which, if WC did climb the ladder a bit would put that WC F1 at risk.

I imagine the crows wouldve factored all of this in and considered it too risky to just take WC’s F1 for 8. Too many unknowns.

So the best option was to just grab the gun lad this year.
Yep - All makes sense. Whilst I do think we'll improve next year, I do thing we'll win more than 5 but we should be a lot more competitive. (We better ****ing be!)

Still think picks 1-3 most likely.

First time I've had a logical conversation with a bearded clam too.

Vader

it seems it was pick 8 for eagles F1 based on the above
makes Curtin seem even more valuable. Basically a top 3 pick. I also had another Eagles poster message me privately confirming the club rated him as a top 3 pick.

We are now building that 6-8 absolute elites needed for a flag - many of these are my projected elites with mix of forwards, mids and back. talls and smalls

Dawson
Rachele
TT
Rankine
Pedlar
Max
Curtin

EDIT Worrell the other one - elite to immediate level below that (AA squad type level)

Fog - needs to keep moving move up
Soligo B+ minimum
Murray - was heading towards AA squad. Hoping injuries dont interrupt long term
Hinge - need to re-sign for 4-5 years @ likely at least 600-700k IMO under new pay structures. He will always be a FA each end of contract so lets sign him up for the long term. Heading towards elite

B+ types

Milera - have hopes 2023 is his new baseline and improves further from here to an A grader
Jones coming good. How much growth left
Edwards - exciting prospect

Pumped for the next few years.

I'd love to see an Oliver, LDU, McCluggage type added end of next year to the group.
Would truly catapult us into contention.
Right now feel like there's still development needed in above group over 2 or 3 years to really reach the level.

You are bang on that we rated him very highly - Ogilvie himself made that comment about him as a top 5 player in ANY draft

So where did the Crows rate Curtin?

Ogilvie said the club had been keen for some time before their interest was vindicated after his star performance in the AFL Futures game on Grand Final day in 2022.

“I never go into exactly where we rank them because sometimes there’s a little bit of strategy around if there’s two key backs in the top eight, which one you rank where and which one you’re going to take first,” he added.

“But he’d pretty much always been a top-five player for us. Since that 17-year-old’s game on Grand Final day where we thought he was best on ground.

“We’d known about him since he was 15. I went back and checked all the reports and the first contact (we made).

“You probably know you’re never really going to be in a position to get those players, but then when one comes up with live trading on the night, you need to have done the work. The guys did a power of work over three years on Dan.

“We thought he was always a top-five player in any draft.”

Oliver with known issues at 7 years / $7m probably seems a stretch now. Especially if Dees want to get rid of him end of 2024 we shouldn't be touching. So that options gone

McCluggage I would love but its very very unlikely. He loves Brissie and his Mgr has already said they were going to start contract talks over the preseason. The only way we tempt him is with a Godfather offer - what is that these days 1.25m x 5 years - and even then Brissie can probably get within 100-150k of this amt after tax AND we set uourselves up for other OOC players asking for maximum $$

LDU - agree Kangas could be an option with abundance of elite mids but they would probably want a player not more picks. He will be a pre-agent next year so perhaps something like a first rounder and Worrell (who I think is tracking towards elite/next level down) may tempt them. Preferably first rounder plus Butts or Keane though. Murray, Curtin, Worrell as our 3 talls plus Max, Hinge, Milera is an extremely exciting backline over coming years

Probably the obvious one is Phillipou - is he good enough to offer a 'Day like' contract to? 5 years at 800k ish? We probably havent seen enough yet but clearly the club went hard before he was drafted letting him know we wanted to bring him home and communicating to one of the Clubs Execs in recent mths we are hoping he remains unsigned for as long as possible into 2024...would cost us a fair bit though to pry away from Saints

I hope our trade this year ensures a free hit on Himmelberg next year, lads. make it happen
No probs.

Please give him $900k per year though so we get first round compo. Thanks!

Hey Peeps,
First of all. Really well done on your 2023 draft.

Nabbing Curtin, C.Edwards (one of my favs) and Oscar Ryan who looks rock solid is a really good result. Cudos.

We've had a few ask on our board about the actual trade offer. It's been directly confirmed by someone from the Eagles who's part of the draft team, the offer was F1 for 8. Nothing else, just a straight swap.

So potentially Curtin for Draper I suppose.

I hope this help all :thumbsu:

Cheers,
AE

* edit - eaglevision just beat me to it.
What’s the opposite of deathriding? Because that’s what we’re doing next year with the Weagles.

A few bit and pieces at the start I hadn't seen before

Looks like we offered GWS our first pick + F2 for their first pick. GWS countered with swapping both our 2 first rounders plus our F2 instead, which since we really wanted Curtin and didn't mind moving back a couple spots for the next pick, it seemed to work out well for both clubs.
