2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

From what I can see, the pre selling looks great for the Carl v Ess match.

What do we all reckon is a par crowd for Dogs v Power? Haven’t played them at Docklands since 2015 (besides 2021 with lockdown), with a highest crowd 22,691. I was thinking the 23,000 mark should be the aim.

Dogs / Power. 24,000 I’d say.

Yeah Sunday night with a day off next day, two big clubs, add in the narrative "last chance saloon" for the Blues, I think should get a large roll up.

I don't even know why I want to go to this game bc I know it has all the ingredients of a '99 prelim final written all over it...

Don’t let it worry you. The Bombers aren’t at a point yet where they will win a final. That is still 12-24 months away. In meantime, just enjoy the ups and downs. Its backline is vulnerable if it doesn’t win its share of stoppages. 50/50 game in truth.

I'll say 65,000 if Carlton were in the 8 it would of been 85,000. Typical Carlton over 20 years s**t the bed before a big rival game.

Given Essendon vs Carlton has only cracked 85,000 twice in history, and given both games were Round 20/21 when they were sitting 1st and 2nd on the ladder, I highly doubt they’d reach 85k.

Granted, they’ve never been legitimately good at the same time for a quarter of a century, but Essendon vs Carlton is just not the drawcard people like to think it is. They’d both need to be solidly top 4 to get close to mid-high 80’s.

Reason historic crowds have been low is the last 20 years both clubs have been miserable.

In current era crowds are bigger. 3 game memberships, better facilities, MCC provisional and restricted members now have access. That’s one of reasons why MCG crowds are generally larger than 10 years ago.

If Carlton were in the eight right now, this game draws 85,000.

You make some valid points and could say the exact same thing about Richmond v Collingwood need to be top 4 or public holiday. I have not checked but by memory Carlton v Essendon crowds are pretty good considering they have never played in marquee game and hold the record for a home and away game on a non public holiday.

Its easily the worst of the big 4 matchups, and behind Collingwood/Geelong and Geelong/Hawthorn since 2010.

100% since 2010..I've thrown enough hand grenades in this thread so I will just say if only the Blues and Bombers had the same record as Geelong and Hawthorn in that time my gosh could you imagine the Carlton and Essendon crowds against those 4 teams.

Seem about right. Hawks v Lions could be a couple thousand under, depending on if Hawks fans show up. Freo hopefully draw a crowd in the low 40’s.

The selling of AFL members seating today for Blues / Bombers is intriguing. I just wonder if the league were a little jolted after the recent sellout double a couple of weeks back drawing ‘disappointing attendances due to club member no shows.

They’re tonight selling restricted view seats and with those 3 bays in the AFL reserve now gone too, I’m interested to see if they start selling Q37-39 in the MCC reserve for public.

It’s weird this game. On basic knowledge it appears public seats are selling really well this week, with the potential of Blues member no shows reducing an apparent 80,000+ crowd into the ~70-75,000 region. It’s hard to get a good feel for how this is selling tbh.

definently agree with the hawthorn game. Members are not gonna show up at all because everyone knows what the result will be. Could even be 25k who knows.

Carlton members will defiantly take a toll on the crowd. If it was an Essendon home game it could easily get 80k but because its Carltons and considering their form, I reckon it will be around 73-76k.

Yes true. I can only sense Essendon fans are coming in numbers based on these sales. The renaissance in form the driver, it may be short lived though.

Is the game a fully ticketed event? If it isn’t it will make the crowd even more intriguing to see how many Essendon and Carlton GA members decide to rock up on the night.

I believe it’s not fully ticketed.

They seem to have held back selling reserved seating for two sections to be for GA members / GA public:
  • Warne Stand (back 1/3 Q6-16 and all of Q1-5)
  • Ponsford Stand (Back 1/2 Q29-36)

Olympic Q level all gone. Restricted view nearly all gone. I’m guessing they’re about to open Q37-39 (MCC) to public along with standing room. Having sold about 1,500 seats to public in AFL Reserve today.
