45. SHAUN MANNAGH

Position:
Small forward/midfielder

Size: 175cm

Clubs: Werribee (VFL)/Lavington

AFL player comparison: Jordan De Goey

The best mature-age prospect up for grabs after a mighty VFL campaign full of eye-catching performances. He won the Norm Goss Medal for the best player in the VFL grand final — despite Werribee’s loss to Gold Coast — after kicking six goals from 28 disposals. But it wasn’t his only standout game for the year. He kicked four goals from 40 touches against Southport in Round 3 then slotted a lazy seven majors from 25 disposals against Sandringham in Round 15. From his 21 games, he’s kicked 40.32 and averaged 25 touches per outing. AFL clubs in recent years have preferred to take mature-age players via the SSP after having a close look at them as train-on players. But Mannagh’s form has been so good that a club surely has to take him in the national draft.

We wanted Jordan last year do you think we will go for Shaun with our third pick?

I reckon he'll probably slip through to the preseason draft. Not many get picked up but perhaps in a draft considered shallow he might.

40. COOPER SIMPSON

Position:
Midfielder

Size: 182cm

Clubs: Dandenong Stingrays/Mt Martha

AFL player comparison: Luke Davies-Uniacke

An ankle injury in his first champs game meant he missed the remaining three matches for Vic Country, but recruiters certainly haven’t gotten the AFL potential of this well-balanced on-baller. He averaged 24 disposals across his first three Talent League games for the Stingrays, while also finishing with 11 touches, seven contested possessions and three centre clearances for the AFL Academy against Port’s SANFL side. He then finished with three strong games for Dandenong: 2.1 from 22 touches against the Bushrangers, 28 disposals and eight marks against the Devils then 2.1 from 20 disposals against Gippsland. Speedy, cool under pressure and clean with ball in-hand, Simpson is also a big moments player that steps up when his team needs him most. Add in his ultra professionalism, elite burstaway speed and evasive step in traffic and you’ve got yourself an AFL player. He could be taken a lot earlier on draft night.

Hope we select Cooper

I reckon he could be a real Chad Warner like pick up.

It's a tough call. We really need to try and draft the best 3 to 4 kids that we can but Mannagh fills a need and is ready to go.
It's an easy enough judgment call at pick 40.
If there's a kid we actually want then we take him, otherwise Mannagh gets the gig.

54. Harvey Johnston

VIC Metro/Sandringham Dragons

MID, 183cm, 79kg

One of the draft’s best kicks of the football, Johnston’s left foot was pivotal in his role for the Sandringham Dragons as they stormed home to record back to back Coates Talent League premierships. The Victoria Metro product is an evasive mover, working his way through traffic nicely throughout the year, while predominately favouring his disposal by hand as he settled into a role at half forward role during the Championships.

He would be one to consider
Word is Toce likes Johnston!

Normally I would say too small, but we should have learnt lessons with Caleb Daniel.

Unless they are exceptional at a young age, KPP's can always be picked up later in their career's, which the Saints have done with some success, e.g. Gardiner, Gehrig, B.K**g, S.King, Ryder. And they all took us to finals?

The mids. this year who could suit us.

17. Charlie Edwards- might have to jump on him this early
26. Cooper S*****n- Same as above
40. Kane McAuliffe- Toce may like him
40. Harvey Johnston-Balanced mid.
40. Kristian Ferronato- similar to McAuliffe- hard at it mid.
40. Tarkyn O'Leary- run all day winger

There should be good sml. forwards avail. later in the draft or rookie

Latest Zero Hanger draft from Mitch “Twomey Lite” Keating has us taking:

#17 - Ollie Murphy - 200/87 KPD
#27 - Charlie Edwards - 191/85 - MID/UTIL

Both picks drifted after matched bids.

Would be absolutely DELIGHTED with that.

Keep in mind pick #40 might become #36, so maybe there’s another kid that we’re interested in at that range, unless Mannagh is a superstar, at 27 years old next year, he may not be a 5 year player let alone 10 years.. If it’s a late pick, then fair enough, but second round is too high to draft a 27 year old who’s not a gun mid when we already have Higgins (25 next year), Butler (28 next year), you’d better off drafting a young small forward like Delean or Moir at pick 40.

Two of:
Windsor, Wilson, Tholstrup (1st pick)
Collard, Edwards, Jiath, Murphy (2nd pick).

We're in a good spot, just let Toce do his thing!

Its looking pretty likely that Windsor and Wilson will be long gone. Tholstrup a maybe.
Of your second round choices , probably only Jiath there.

Twomey is however saying…

Where does he go? Looks more likely to fit in early in the second round of the draft than in the first. Geelong could be a fit if the Cats don't grab a key defender with their top pick.

You could easily flip the picks IMO without being wrong.

Would still be happy.

I’m a Tholstrup fan; love the idea of a curly-mulleted, speed dealer-wearing cult hero at the club.

Demattia goes alright in that department too. Looks like the Honey Badger mated with a highland longhorn cow.

I haven’t seen a lot of him….

But from the little I have. I’m liking Darcy Wilson at our first.

…Edwards at our second 🤞

Next years meant to be a stronger draft.
This is said every year.

Infact it was genuinely said this time last year about this draft.

I genuinely feel like that saying “a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush” is really relevant when it comes to drafts.

Do the work. If you can’t split or think highly enough of certain kids.

Go get them as opposed to always waiting for “better”

Likened to Davies-Unilacke

I meant more in the way that he was drafted in the 30s and looks an elite talent than like for like as a player. That said there is definitely some similarities too. He has that real burst power and ability to hard run to get separation.
