So with Tasmania seemingly inevitable now, no doubt the AFL will build their list by handing them a boatload of draft picks, half of which immediately wanted to be traded back to Victoria.

But imo, the best and fairest way to build a new team is via an expansion draft.
Norf will relocate.

The AFL won’t want an odd number of sides (19) & won’t want to risk it taking a decade to build a competitive playing list.

No player aspires to play for Norf. Sheezel would have preferred to go to a Club with some prospect of success. The only trades they achieve are B and C graders on A Grade salaries. They actually add to inflation and distort salary caps. The AFLPA loves them.

Sicily bad mouthing Tasmania is one of the dumbest things I've seen from a captain. Poor form from any Hawks player but specifically their captain is just plain dumb

Mentored by Kennett, no doubt.

Expansion draft as in the new team can draft players from existing teams, where the existing teams get to protect a core of, let's say, 18 players which are untouchable?

Yeah. You could debate what the protections should be. It would be a little more complicated than just clubs choosing a list of players to protect.

Obviously there would be an issue around getting the players (association) to agree. But money talks.

It is a much better system than what they used to create GWS and Gold Coast. Which is arguably still impacting the draft today.

Why do you say that?

I thought it’d be the obvious path forward, particularly given North Melbourne’s ongoing financial struggles.
I don't think North have significant financial issues. They are debt free and turned a profit last year.

Either way, the supporters are never going to go for it unless they genuinely think the club is on the brink of folding. Which it isn't.

I suspect the AFL will offer significant incentives. As I noted, they won’t want 19 clubs.

North has the lowest membership base of any Vic club & is (in my view) the obvious candidate.

As we saw with Fitzroy, the AFL wields a lot of clout if it sees an opportunity to further its aims.

Quick naked eye check

Goalless Halves 2023

Sydney 1
other teams 0

Goalless Quarters 2023

Hawthorn 3
Sydney 2
Geelong 2
Bulldogs 2
Richmond 2
Fremantle 1
Carlton 1
West Coast 1
Collingwood 1
Port Adelaide 1
Melbourne 1
North 1
Essendon 1
Not so bad in that context, got them both out of the way in the same game.

I don't mind a team in Tasmania.

But I can't see the benefit of a 19 team competition. It is still 9 games per round. And it will make the fixture more complicated if each teams is having byes at various points of the season.

Whately was also a bit annoying talking about it on AFL360 on Wednesday night. His attitude was that anyone who votes against a Tasmanian team is going to be judged by history and would be the worst person ever.

I’d like to see The King! swear his allegiance to the Swans even if a Tasmanian team eventuates.

The King! why is there a need for another stadium in Hobart?
Why not Bellerive Oval/Blundstone Arena?
Edit: this is behind a paywall

Few people here are anti staidum

Bellerive is in the suburbs it used to be tiny , the parking is non existent it's surrounded by houses and a beach, it's in like a corner and public transport can barely get it.

utas is a great service but most of the stands are the temp ones they just put a roof over , it's poor viewing , crowd walks in front, same as bellerieve. Not as cramped as Bellerieve.

But it's in Launnie, teams needs to be in Hobart .

Norf dropping Will Phillips is quite baffling.

Surely a rebuilding side needs to get games into the young bloke.
Good sized mid who was an elite junior…,hmmm…

Clarkson would know if the kid is good.

Solid pass from me.
Maybe, Maybe not. Pretty sure he doesn’t get everything 100 per cent right.

back writing in the hsun.

Oh that's good news. Not that I ever read his tosh. Hope he is back on 360 soon, purely for the entertainment of his crazy ravings.

I'm a fan of the certified legendary thread on Robbo in the Media forum on BF. For years like minded folk have collected his utterances, contributions to language and the meaning of arm waving. The thread contains some fine satirical writing. Many pieces have caused me stomach cramps from laughing. All there are genuinely concerned for the health of the bloke.

I don't think he's wrong though.

The fact that a captain of the club that has represented Tassie the most has come out and said what a lot of us were thinking about the retention issues that Tassie may have, it's very telling.
