Didn't ask for them, he'd eaten before we left. He usually gets crap from there though and that's when it does add up, that and drinking booze.

Last two seasons, I spent $100 on GA home game membership each season, which was a deal the club isn’t running anymore. Went to 90% of home games, caught public transport in, either treated myself to a pie or brought a sandwich, avoided the beers, brought a water bottle. Across 2 seasons worth of games, I probably spent $250-$300 total by choosing to be frugal, and also having some student concessions for PTV which was fortunate. That’s for transport, food/drink, membership, and about 15-20 games I guess.

Alternatively, I have spent far more on maintaining my MCC membership in that time, and only been to a few saints games there, AND it costs $50 to bring a guest. Feels like a scam to keep that going (proportionate to my income), but I trust in due time it’ll be worth it.

Kayo One costs $25 a month, and if you run it during the footy season alone that’s priced OKAY.

7AFL is free, replays on AFL website after all matches are free. Pirating is free if you’re so inclined. Going to the pub and watching fox footy there is free / the price of a pot. Radio is free.

Totally believe that you can go to the footy on the cheap, say $18 GA (IIRC), $4.50 pie, $4.50 public transport (after 6pm IIRC) = $27 for the night ain’t bad.

IMO, public transport should be significantly cheaper if not free, and GA footy tickets should be capped at $10, and pies capped at $2.50, so anyone no matter who you are, can have a basic Australia footy experience (which is still world class) for a great reliable price. But hey, that’s just my imagined utopia, it’s all a business at the end of the day isn’t it, so there will always be every incentive to spend more and more, and Aussie’s are big spenders.

And the other thing is that it’s relative, right now spending a lot of money on the footy to me is ludicrous, but it’s possible down the track I will be fortunate enough not to batt an eyelid at paying my KAYO subscription, or buying a beer or two at the stadium, or getting a nicer st kilda annual membership perhaps with reserve seats, or buying a $70 scarf etc etc. Would be an immense privilege.

For now I’m just stoked I get nice MCC seats for our 150th next week!

Definitely. If you go to a decent EPL game or LL game you pay insane money. NBA is the same, footy is still a people's sport and one of the cheapest ways to fill in a few hours anywhere. Like saying Ikea is expensive because you come home with a car full of crap instead of the flimsy $40 coffee table you went for. If you can't impulse control yourself that's not anyone else's fault IMO.

$27 is 2 pints of good but not outstanding beer. I went to a pub to watch the footy with a mate last season and we ended up drinking heaps and cost way more than going to the game.

Did you read what I said? I agree it’s expensive but only if you want to make it expensive. It can also be done very cheaply. No one is forced to eat or drink at the footy. If I couldn’t afford I’d bring my drink and food. Watching all sport on tv is cheap. If I had a choice I’d go every single time and if I couldn’t afford the add ons I’d bring stuff. Can’t beat being there. Unfortunately Saturdays for me are usually out when local footy starts. Not this week though. There goes $200. And that’s just for me. And I get free train travel because I’m old.

It's a different world than when I was a kid. Part of the ritual was all the thermos full of scorching tomato soup and shit sandwiches and a blanket that you didn't want because it made you look like a pussy. You'd feel like a bit of a tit these days doing the full picnic set up.

Don’t ever give up your mcc membership if you can afford it. Grand final day is the best day of footy for the year even if we aren’t playing. My daughter was down at birth. She is now 28 and still about 6 years from full membership but I make sure she pays it every single year It’s a waste when she sees 2 games a year but she will thank me when she can go to grand finals every year.

Well that the price you have to pay. Actually that’s the price you don’t have to pay. I’ve always made a day at the footy a big day even when we went as a family but I could afford it. My dad couldn’t when he took the kids so it was a pie each and shut up.

Yes I did read what you posted and if it’s $27 per head to walk up and buy a ticket that’s still $108 plus fares or parking for a family of 4. That’s not cheap, maybe compared to other forms of entertainment it’s reasonable but things are tough for a lot of people and I can understand why they stay home. I’d encourage anyone doing it tough to wander down and watch local football and watch afl on the tv.

Free train travel ? Really. I haven’t caught public transport in 20 years or so but I didn’t think anyone got it for free.

If it’s a family of 4 meaning two kids it’s $54 dollars for a family ticket. If you buy your membership it’s even cheaper. If you can’t afford it then you don’t go but I’d never encourage them to not go. I’d encourage them to go as many times as they can afford to go. I’d encourage every footy fan to find a local footy club and support them as well. Local Footy clubs are fantastic for kids and adults. Kids can actually have local footy hero’s.

My old man and mother get free travel.

My old man worked in the railways for over 25 years. If you work for 25 years when you leave you and your spouse get free pass for life.

If you can’t afford it then you don’t go but I’d never encourage them to not go. I’d encourage them to go as many times as they can afford to go. I’d encourage every footy fan to find a local footy club and support them as well. Local Footy clubs are fantastic for kids and adults. Kids can actually have local footy hero’s.

No idea what age the family ticket stops at. Couldn’t imagine it’s till you are 18. Maybe 14.

I should have added you need a seniors card but unless you are the most honest person ever you get them when you are 60. You also get 2 free v line trains a year.

I’ve never bothered getting a seniors card I didn’t think it did much but that‘s a pretty handy thing.

The economy is definitely pretty shit out there. Discretionary spend is a bit tight at the moment but mostly for people with a recent mortgage. There are still plenty with money around.
